Zombie Shakespeare posted a message on Pauper Infinite Combos and Repeatable Combos ListAn interesting one I came across today is Llanowar Druid with Strider Harness, land auras like Utopia Sprawl, Wild Growth, and Abundant Growth, and Grim Harvest with Bloodrite Invoker as the finisher.Posted in: MTGO Pauper -

Darkninja107 posted a message on [Pauper Spoilers] StrixhavenTeach by Example will be tested for my Hunt for Red Controlber list as a 2-of. Being able to copy Fiery Cannonade against decks that run bigger creatures would be good. Being able to copy most of the other spells in that deck is good too!Posted in: Pauper -

Upkeep posted a message on [Pauper Spoilers] StrixhavenWe're almost done with Strixhaven spoilers and boy there are a few cool things to talk about!Posted in: Pauper
The cycle of Scry-lands for enemy colours might seem overcosted, but you can be sure these are going to see play. Quandrix Campus in particular is going to see play because it produces the colours that current Tron decks need. Paying 5 mana for scry 1 will be used infrequently, but having that occasional free scry will be better than 1 life from Thornwood Falls, there's no question. I will absolutely be playing the campuses in Turbo Fog and any other multicolour control decks I build over the gain lands.
I don't understand why Blue is getting such great removal, but Resculpt is fantastic. 2 mana to exile an artifact or creature at instant speed is as good as it gets, in my opinion. A 4/4 is big, but that won't matter as much when you are exiling Ulamog's Crushers, Gurmag Anglers, Bonder's Ornaments and even Ninja of the Deep Hours. That token can be blocked, destroyed, bounced... I think Resculpt is going to be a great sideboard removal spell for many decks.
Deck-building is going to get very interesting if any of the Lesson/Learn spells are worth playing. What are your favorite combinations? Pop Quiz seems like a contender to see play because it's a blue instant, and it's able to get all sorts of toolbox answers, like fixing and life gain with Environmental Sciences, broad removal with Introduction to Annihilation, more card draw with Introduction to Prophecy. These colourless cards seem likely to see some amount of play. Even if they are overcosted, they still do a lot because they don't take up maindeck space. The coloured Lesson cards have not impressed me much so far. Maybe Pest Summoning could be okay.
First Day of Class may be the most broken card in the set for Pauper. It enables infinite combos with Persist creatures, as well as making token strategies way better. Can you imagine this with Battle Screech or Triplicate Spirits? Or in colour, you could go for Mogg War Marshal or any mass token producer. The fact that it also draws you cards or gets you your wish board is just gravy. I'm keeping an eye on this card.
Guiding Voice is the cheapest Learn card out there. The effect is modest, but having access to a wish board or just digging through the deck seems great. I think this will see maindeck play in Mono-White Heroic decks. Fetching up an Expanded Anatomy seems strong.
Bayou Barker seems like a great addition to aristocrat decks out there. It seems very easy to get it out on turn 2 and get value out of a 1-drop like Blisterpod. I could even see it in Stompy decks, where sacing a token from Nest Invader or Young Wolf could leave you with some real power on the board.
Is Heated Debate the first uncoutnerable spell in Pauper? At 3 mana, it doesn't seem like it will see much play, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
Teach By Example is pretty unique in Pauper as well. What would be the best spells to copy with this kind of ability?
So far, pretty good spoiler season for a Standard set! Have I missed anything worth mentioning? -

Darkninja107 posted a message on [NEW BREW] Emerging Mutations - Simic Mutate/Emerge Midrange.I've been keeping the Emerge mechanic in the back of my mind and recently revisited the idea with this new brew. With the addition of Mutate we now have some more creatures that fit into the game plan. Plan: Drop early ETB creatures for value then Emerge/Mutate them for more value.Posted in: Paper Pauper and Peasant
Emerge Creatures:
Mutate Creatures:
Here's my current list:
This deck can fairly consistently see a second turn Mutated Greathorn with 4 lands in play. Arboreal Grazer and Elvish Pioneer allow for this to happen.
Dreamtail Heron can come down on turn 3 giving us a strong flier that replaces itself.
Wretched Gryff has the same benefits as Dreamtail Heron, but you draw when it is cast so it replaces itself even if countered.
It of the Horrid Swarm has good stats and brings along some Mutate/Edict fodder or allows you to go wider.
Fierce Empath is also great to not only fetch the Emerge creatures, but it also reduces the Emerge cost by 3 making it a good sac option.
Skyshroud Cutter is a recent addition to the list that I'm testing for now. I've always been wondering if there will ever be a reason to use this creature in Pauper for any combos or synergies, and this might be it. The "free" casting cost coupled with it's 4 cmc opens the up 2nd turn Emerge creatures. Is it worth your opponent gaining 5 life? I'm still trying to determine that. This is a big flex slot for the list, so if anyone has other suggestions for enabling quick Emerges then let me know! So far this is the only "free" creature with a high cmc.
Giantbaiting is another card that fits into using early creatures for value. Burning-Tree Emissary helps add a free creature to conspire with and if you had a first turn Grazer/Pioneer then Giantbaiting can hit hard Turn 2. Emissary can't be a Mutate target since it's human, but providing a "free" body gives you Edict protection for your Mutants.
Another creature I was using originally was Siege Wurm. It was easy to cast fairly early with Convoke and can be tutored with Fierce Empath. I considered some other Convoke creatures, but Siege Wurm is probably the best option since it has Trample. I cut it out of the list to have room to test Skyshroud Cutter for the time being.
As always, any thoughts, comments, and suggestions are welcome! Has anyone else tested any Emerge lists in the past? What about Mutate? -

Zombie Shakespeare posted a message on [Pauper Spoilers] Commander Legends DiscussionFleshbag Marauder got down shifted too. That seems strong.Posted in: Pauper
Also, while not official yet I think Spectral Searchlight was seen in the leaks at common. -

Upkeep posted a message on [Pauper Spoilers] Commander Legends DiscussionHey Folks, we've got a brand new season of spoilers already. These supplemental sets are often where we get the best new goodies for Pauper, so it's an exciting time.Posted in: Pauper
This set contains both brand new cards and downshifted reprints.
The Diamond cycle has been downshifted to common (Marble Diamond, etc.). I think these are probably playable in some decks. It gives certain colours access to ramp that didn't necessarily have it this efficiently before. I'm not sure where they would see play in particular though.
Maelstrom Colossus is probably on of the most interesting cards to come out so far. This is finally good competition with Ulamog's Crusher for "best fatty". This one feels especially relevant now since Ghostly Flicker effects are commonplace in Tron decks, giving this colossus an easy home as both a finisher and a value engine.
Natural Reclamation is expensive, but the potential value out of this is extraordinary. I've love to kill an artifact land and get a free Blastoderm, for example.
Forceful Denial is good along the same lines, but maybe a bit harder to use, since leaving up 5 mana to counter a spell is not great, but Blue manipulating its library might improve Cascade results.
We got much needed reprints of Thorn of the Black Rose and Entourage of Trest. I assume Palace Sentinels will also appear soon. These cards are obscenely expensive on MTGO.
Makeshift Munitions is making its way to common. I think this is a great card that should be somewhat playable in Red decks that play tons of tokens or artifacts. It might make for some interesting control-oriented Aristocrat decks. I love it! It's Pauper's Goblin Bombardment!
There are a few black commons printed, but they all seem pretty overcosted for Pauper.
Are there any printings/downshifts that you're excited for? -

Upkeep posted a message on [Spoiler Discussion] Zendikar RisingSpoiler season for Zendikar Rising has only just begun but we already have quite a few commons to talk about!Posted in: Pauper
Feed the Swarm is officially the best enchantment removal in Black, without a doubt. The fact that it also destroys creatures means it will most likely find its way into maindecks in small numbers. Pharika's Libation was already good enough to see play; this is a mana cheaper and is targeted removal. The mana cost is right and the life loss should be negligible.
Anticognition is a worse Essence Scatter in the early game, but turns into a really powerful counterspell in the mid/late game. Getting 8 cards in the opponent's graveyard is not hard to do for control decks. This should also be interesting to see with Thought Scour. It should go great in Dimir tempo and control decks. Maybe Turbo Fog could find some use for this.
Akoum Hellhound is a colour-shifted Steppe Lynx, which saw fringe play in the early 2010s. It's always good to pay attention to functional reprints like these because they create redundancy for a specific strategy. Could Boros Landfall be a thing in the future?
Have I missed any other interesting cards, in your opinion? Let us know! -

Zombie Shakespeare posted a message on Double Masters DowngradesThere's also Alabaster Mage, Argivian Restoration, Heartless Pillage, and Clear Shot. None of which are going to be huge format staples but overall Double Masters is a big boon for Pauper.Posted in: Pauper
I think Myr Retriever, Bone Picker, Cast Down, and Everflowing Chalice are going to make waves. I'm also excited for Abrade and Crib Swap for PDH. -

Upkeep posted a message on Double Masters DowngradesWe got a good number of downgraded cards from Uncommon to Common in this set:Posted in: Pauper
Ancestral Blade
Crib Swap
Crusader of Odric
Sanctum Spirit
Frogify
Vedalken Infuser
Bone Picker
Cast Down
Balduvian Rage
Kazuul's Toll Collector
Orcish Vandal
Rapacious Dragon
Abrade
Conclave Naturalists
Everflowing Chalice
Golem-Skin Guantlets
Iron League Steed
Magnifying Glass
Skinwing
Surge Node
Myr Retriever
I think that's all of them. What are you most excited about? Are there any cards here that you think will made an impact on the format?
Cast Down seems to be the very best 2-mana removal in Black they've ever had at common. Step aside, Victim of Night.
I'm really hyped to play Bone Picker. Black got its own Delver of Secrets that's even easier to activate!
White got the most downgrades after artifacts, but unfortunately, not much of it seems playable. Ancestral Blade is on-curve and potentially strong, but I can't see any deck wanting this right now. Crib Swap is exiling removal, but the 3 mana is more of a drawback than the 1/1 changeling it leaves behind. I could see it getting some play, though.
I'm pumped for Balduvian Rage, but only because it's going to go into my Zada, Hedron Grinder PDH deck. Aside from that, Rapacious Dragon is the biggest dragon in Pauper and making two treasures is very strong. Orcish Vandal turns your artifacts into free Shocks, which could have applications. Abrade was a staple Standard card, time will tell if it will make its way into Pauper sideboards, as competition for artifact hate and creautre removal is pretty fierce though we've never had both on a card this efficient I think.
Everflowing Chalice is such a powerful card, but I can't think of any ramp deck that would play it.
Myr Retriever is ripe with combos and has seen play in very successful decks in the past in eternal formats. Alex Ullman wrote an article about the potential power of Myr Retriever in Pauper: https://www.channelfireball.com/all-strategy/articles/myr-retriever-in-pauper/
Golem-Skin Guantlets is a fetchable Trinket Mage target that gets better with other equipment. With 2 other equipments attached, it offers more power than Bonesplitter.
Magnifying Glass is unforunately a bit outclassed by Bonder's Ornament, but maybe certain decks will want the extra permanents in play rather than cheaper card draw.
Surge Node is an extremely efficient card. There are very few cards in Pauper that actually use Charge counters, and even fewer that are even playable. Everflowing Chalice seems like the best fit here, but I think it will take more than that to make a deck want to play this. -

Forgive me for not using card tags, but I’m on my phone and about to hop a probably empty flight so I’m rushing a bit.Posted in: Paper Pauper and Peasant
I’ve been playing Caw Blade in pauper for about 5 years. A couple notes (but what works for me doesn’t work for everyone):
*I’ve never ran multiples of the same equipment. I run 1x Bonesplitter, 1x Bladed Bracers, 1x Mantle of Tides. Mantle is great with Brainstorm and opens up interesting combat tricks most opponents don’t consider.
* I run 2x Guardian and 2x Seraph of Dawn. The angel with Bonesplitter and Bracers attached is a Baneslayer with Vigilance and opponents will quickly dump all removal in hand to get to her.
*I run 2x Angelic Renewal which protects my bombs in a format full of removal and is just unfair when paired with Mulldrifter.
*Depending the meta, I either run 4x Thraben Inspector (grindier metas) or Seeker of the way (faster metas).
*You will need counterspells in a competitive environment.
*12 cantrips is a bit redundant for me with 4x mullsdrifter, 4x Inspector, and the birds. I run 4x Brainstorm, 2x Ponder, 2x Preordain.
*With Trinket Mage it is never a bad idea to run a Relic main deck as it hurts so much of the meta.
*Sideboard I always have a couple flag bearers to eat removal and couple copies of Echoing Truth against tokens. - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.

Nice idea you have here. Sleeved up the mono-B on 'trice. The deck works fast and has hand disruption to boot. Will make a UB Rogue with the suggested cards and post the decklist asap.
