The End of an Era

I could really do with less cards that show people barfing up money ... one was already more than enough

The cards are OK, but I'm not that excited for most of them. Alibou is neat I guess, as is Losheel. But they just couldn't help themselves and had to put combat-related text on all of the secondary commanders. Is it that scary to try something different? I really wish they would've gone deeper into the activated ability theme. I like how Alibou supports it though, you can attack with a random token and still get extra damage from your tappers and mana rocks.

Yeah, Divide By Zero feels like a wasted spot for a great card name.

Mechanics-wise, my favorite card from the set probably is Hofri Ghostforge. It's a shame that his art is so bad though. What is that composition? It looks like ... nothing. Why is there no movement? Why is the spirit ball thing right in front of him? Atrocious. I don't play Commander anymore, but if I did I'd definitely have to get a custom-made alter for this card.

Arcavios is Magics second official plane with Cervins after Lorwyn/Shadowmoor!

Ok, I guess that mistakes happen, but this one is the second one for this spoiler season, and both were on big, splashy mythics ... at that point, you should really ask yourself if your QA is working properly

Harness Infinity and Excavated Wall go into my list of fav art from this set.

Dina looks like she will be a semi-popular commander since she's both cheaper and has more colors than Vito and also enables the Exquisite Blood combo.

I liked the Planeswalkers Guide, it's always nice when a plane has a map! My only complaint is that for being described as being close to the Witherbloom campus of Strixhaven, the Detention Bog looks to be ridiculously far way - which either makes the description further up in the article not accurate, or the northern continent super small.

Oof, cards like Charge Through almost make me want to fall in with the "all new Magic art sucks" crowd...

Alt art Quandrix is neat. I think I prefer all of the alt arts to the regular versions sogar, which doesn't usually happen

The second story was ... OK? It felt perfunctory, to move stuff along. I kind of wish they'd cut out more of the fight scenes, almost every story has them and they're always kind of tedious to read. I'd prefer more character stuff instead.

I don't think it's "ask people instead of research" but that it helps you get closer to a first hand account. Focusing on spirits also helps make it much more distinctly magical, White/Red already does Equipment pretty regularly so this gives it a new angle mechanically as well.
Yeah, I could see how it could be spun to be more interesting, but we don't know for sure so far. Stonebound Mentor's and Spirit Summoning's flavor text sure makes it seem like "you ask them, and they tell you the facts", which would be kind of lame. Also, I'd be interested in where they get the statues from. Can you make new spirit sculptures, or are they all being found (Make Your Mark suggests the former)? Do you have to die to have a spirit scultpure made out of you?

Owlin is such a stupid term. Dramatic Finale is nice, although the last line puts a damper on things.

So this is how they're going to handle card draw in white, huh? Your opponent also gets to draw, but better and for free. The players are going to love it...

The art for both of these is really neat. I'm hoping for more turtlefolk (and frogfolk) in the future.

People have been memeing Strixhaven as the "HP ripoff set" from the point the name and tagline got spoiled, before we saw anything. You always see what you want to see. I mean, of course the influence is going to be there because of HPs huge cultural status, but so far I don't really see 1:1 plants unless you count really broad tropes like "genius student" and "university sports teams."

Also, the whole "there absolutely was a HP tie in at some point that they had to scrap" argument feels like something on the level of Mew being under the truck near SS Anne. It's based on nothing more than the perception of Wizards as a "SJW company" by some and Rowling's recent fall from grace.

The fractal is not how i imagined it. Not abstract enough
Right? When I first read that there were fractal tokens in this set, I was like "wow, that's some crazy stuff, can't wait to see it..." But turns out "fractals" are just glowy ghost animals. Kind of disappointing.

Typical art elitist attitude that uses singular, local problems as an excuse to go into vague laments about how "people nowadays" just don't understand the value of art anymore.
These "debates" usually go nowhere, as any attempt to point out the value in newer MtG art is met with a blanket "no, it's all bad and you should feel bad for liking it; I'm right because I'm one of the few who still has taste" so I don't really think there's any use in continuing this thread of discussion...

Upon looking through the cards Jason Felix has illustrated, I noticed that his style is strangely all over the place though. Maybe it's bias because of this case, but I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that he "fudged" his stuff in one way or the other before.

I mean, Blogatog is Maro answering fan questions in his free time. He probably assigned meteorology to Witherbloom because it feels "nature-y." But since Witherbloom uses component-based Magic while Quandrix focuses on theoretical patterns, I agree that it it's a better fit for Quandrix.
I've noticed a similar thing for Lorehold: Maro has said that the study of all foreign languages is a Silverquill thing, but we've already seen a Lorehold card showing students learning a language, and language learning is pretty much essential for the study of history. I guess contemporary use of foreign languages is in Silverquill while foreign languages for historical research purposes are in Lorehold.

I like the Lorehold flavor, although I kind of wish they had focused more on the artifact theme instead of the spirit theme. In addition to artifacts just being thematically closer to the archeology, I don't really like the "why do research when you can just ask the real persons ghost" angle. I have a background in cultural studies and anthropology (I'd definitely be in Lorehold with a few courses in Silverquill), and to me the concept of "history" Wizards is working with here seems a bit one-dimensional.
