Why is everyone complaining so much? People are far too much into this game, lol. Yes I know, Crucible of Worlds was great and all, but there also are Vanish into Memory and Forgotten Ancient. YMTC isn't "make your own competetive format staple". Yes, this is most likely going to be a casual card, but hey, there are tournament staples coming out with every set. Seriously, what's the problem? Stop being so butthurt and just move on.
I love cloning, copying and the UG color combination. Something like this would fit my playstyle I guess:
The ShapewalkerUG (or "Furou, Soramaro's Shifter" for the sake of including the user name somehow)
Legendary Creature - Shapeshifter UG: ~ becomes a copy of target nonlegendary creature until end of turn and gains "1UG: Put a token that's a copy of this creature onto the battlefield. Activate this ability only once each turn." 2/2
The 'only once' restriction may be a bit unelegant, but the second ability would be too good without it.
Also, the card doesn't reflect my personality so well. Gotta think about a different, "Human Wizard" character for that again.
I dislike the use of a Sea God as the head of Blue because it IS shallow. [...] Why didn't they use the Greek god of Wisdom for blue?
I agree with you on that. A god of wisdom and mind would've porbably been cooler for blue than your generic sea god (even if the blue 'sea goddess' in Theros is most likely not only that, but also the goddess of wisdom etc. ... the 'real' Athena had a bunch of other attributes to).
In your earlier post however, it just sounded like you weren't OK with blue getting the goddess of the sea.
I loved Kamigawa due to its taking Japanese mythology and making it feel like MtG. Theros just isn't resonating the same way, and using direct names from the source material doesn't help.
I can't help but feeling that you're exaggerating here. Until now, the only things to work with are some names and a few pieces of artwork. Maybe it seems too close to you because greek gods and mythology are generally better known overall than their japanese equivalents. It will feel more like Magic when the pictures are put into the card frame with added mechanics and we get to know more about the world. I think that in the end, Theros will end up similar to Kamigawa flavour-wise.
I'm also rather upset they went with "Goddess of the Sea" = blue BECAUSE LOLOLWATERISBLUE!!!! Not a fan of shallow (heh) themes like that.
I don't understand your point here at all. So in your opinion, a green or black goddess of the sea would have been better? The flavour of blue has been connected with water and the sea since alpha. Heck, its symbol is a water droplet. It's not a shallow theme, it's just natural to do it like that.
I agree with you however that Theros seems to be a bit heavy on its theme. I don't think it's that much of a problem though. When Kamigawa came out, everyone was complaining that Magic had turned into an anime card game, too.
I have to say though that I'd have used bushido, renamed to heroism, for Theros, but the renamed ability is apparently tied to the gods.
Oh ok, I wasn't aware of the 'connected to the gods' thing.
Soldiers, ?, Griffin, Sphinx, Lobster and Merfolk God
The second one looks like the 'ethereal' form of a god or some other inhabitant of Nyx to me. You can make out a humanoid silhoette among the 'galactic mists'.
Just noticed that I'm a total sucker for all that 'night sky, stars and the universe' imagery on the gods and the things conneccted with them. It just looks so awesome. I have to get a few foil copies of some of those cards
