Bonfire is NOT in control. Ramp and aggro use it. And terminus, while ok, is unreliable. Also those cards are in standard now. We lose BSZ, which actually helped a lot. He specifically said CONTROL.
Why? He is worse than a Juzam Djinn, and it has been a very long time since a Juzam would be considered playable. He is a 6/6 vanilla beater with an absolutely huge drawback. Don't mistake him as an evasive flier- he's the least evasive creature in the game, and even worse at blocking, and even worse at equipments/auras.
The reason he gets hate on is because he's not even a clear step up from mass of ghouls
The main reason he doesn't get hate on enough is because people are widely misevaluating the card, for example, thinking of his ability as anything but an extreme drawback- it cannot be advantageous, but people see "sacrifice a creature" and "+1/+1" counters and think it might have some good use. It doesn't. People seeing the 6/6 flying and think its a big evasive beater- its not. The flying doesn't work.
Well considering you don't seem to know what a vanilla creature is....
Vanilla is an creature with JUST power and toughness.
French Vanilla has a keyword.
This guy has an ability. He is a edict every turn. In something like Grixis control, that can get very painful.
Um the only clones in standard will be clone (won't see play) and evil twin. I doubt evil twin will see huge play.
As for "multiple wrath effects" there is less board wipes than before. Planar cleansing (won't see play), the azorious on e (good card is good), and mutilate... Mutilate does not kill reanimator unless you have 7+ lands. Additionally, when it comes to GY hate, they can easily play around that. Yes you Crypt my GY but that does nothing to my LOL troll. Additionally, LOL troll is safe form target removal.
So how do you think reanimator style decks will be come RtR? Honestly I think they will be better than before. With Jared's orders you can dig deep. Also with Pack Rats and Lol troll, you can turn your discard into power. You also can use them as a sort of alt win con. Discarding enough stuff Lol troll and pack rats can get to be hard to handle.
Why is everyone evaluating him in a vacuum? I mean of course he sux in a vacuum, but of you have other creatures around swinging, his sacrifice ability begins to look less and less attractive. It could get to the point where you can force them to take damage from your other creatures because they let him get to big. And yes, GC hurts him bad but unless zombies becomes like how Jund was in Alara/Zen than it won't as much. Yes not every card is good against every deck. Like Vapor Snap was Horrible to use on a Titan, and for a while WRR and later RG or RUG ramp were tear 1, but did that stop snag from being played? No. Unless a deck is just completely overbearing then it doesn't matter.
This guy is good if your using a deck that can constantly apply pressure, making his sacrifice more and more painful.
The only storm deck that has counters usually is high tide. I mean really? ANT has no counters, elf ball has no counters, kobold has no counters. Most storm decks don't have counters mainboard. And your arguement still doesn't help flusterstorm. You can counter ONE flusterstorm.
Also, this is horrible against storm because you how often will you have the mana to pay the overload? It is very rare that you will have that mana on THEIR turn to counter their storm. And as a single counter it is still worse than FoW, Spell Pierce, or Counterspell. This will see almost NO legacy play. It's "can't be countered"clause is just too marginal to be better than the current legacy staples.
Oh yeah I totally agree. The place I can see this popping up in is reanimator. They O-ring your Griselbrand? Then reanimate her, bring back your Griselbrand and say remove two of their threats, now they down MASSIVE tempo and have 2 big guys they have to answer. And if your using Pack Rats as a discard outlet they may have even more threats besides the two fatties.
Youre better off casting a fireball for 7 damage which is likely all the life they will have left by the time 8mana happens.
If you werent doing much against aggro (jund/zombies being the big hitters in the future metagame) before 8mana you lost anyways.
Just because you haven't won by turn 8 doesn't mean you haven't done anything. Control can durdle around longer than and they can still be doing quite a bit.
The problem is, it doesn't matter how much good he may be of there is nowhere for him to call home. He is just to reactive and is only good under very specific scenarios. Every spell deck that runs U is probably going to run delver and snapcaster. They may also run Talrand. If they have red they will probably run guttersnipe and the cost reducing goblin. If they run run green they will run Quirion Dryad. There is just not a home for him right now. Maybe if delver had got banned or wasn't printed then maybe
