Clockspinning works like a targeted proliferate with buyback if im not mistaken. Puts extra mana to good use and gets to ultimate before your turn for some surprise activations.
All the fancy mana producing lands deffinately make it easier to play the game. But in terms of price vs impact i still vote for win cons and synergy cards. I have duals, shocks, fetches, diamond valley, volraths stronghold, maze of ith, and many other utility lands in my main deck and i routinely get beaten by guys with vivids, pain lands, and m10 duals... Lands help, But dont win you the game.
Also i agree that you can get probly 6-8 very popular staples that will greatly boost your deck strenght for the price of one dual land.
Most commanders are relativly cheap. Unless you really want to play a high dollar commamder, just pick a one that is in your favorite colors then start collecting staples in those colors.
In terms of which staples... Synergy over raw power will make the game much more enjoyable. If you look at 5 cards that are powerful stand-alones vs. 5 cards that are good individually but work together and create synergy within the deck you will be much more satisfied when you play it.
Expensive land bases come last as far as deck construction. Yes its important to be able to fix your colors but everything you need in terms of mana lands can be had a budget prices. Start with the M10 and innistrad duals then move up to the filter lands. That should fix you up fine in anything 3 color. Utility lands however are very helpful mana and could be nice additions if you have the above mentioned fixers already.
He is a decent body with modest cost and fetches 3 lands on the chump block/sac outlet. I dont see him getting exiled with so many other threats to hold for. Especially commanders! And he can fetch non-basic forests which is amazing in 3 color decks with the duals to support it.
Persist and undying are extremely popular for infinite combos and recursion engines. All too often I've heard "oops I just won" off of persist and undying creatures.
Most notably kitchen finks, woodfall primus, puppeteer cliq, and mikaeus 2.0
