Skimming through the lists, I'm not seeing too much anti-Burn tech in people's sideboards. I'm probably better equipped to take on Burn than the average Devotion player with 3x Collective Brutality, 3x Gifted Aetherborn, and 1x Kalitas in the main, but the matchup still worries me.
Options I'm considering:
Vampiric Link (usually enchanting an enemy threat, but rather hilarious when slapped on Obliterator) Alms of the Vein (pretty amazing when pitched to Brutality; firmly mediocre otherwise) Gonti's Machinations (lower value ceiling than Alms, but less dependent on other cards to make it worth the mana. Adds +1 Devotion in fringe scenarios)
Another Aetherborn or Kalitas in the side
How has the Burn matchup treated you guys? Any thoughts on the above possibilities? Alternate suggestions?
How do we feel about Bloodrage Brawler? Seems to have some good synergy with Demigod. I also play Bloodghast in my version of the deck, so he seems extra attractive for me.
I wish you good luck at the GP then, Unholy Strenght. I also like Obliterator, which to me fits better in the more controlling versions. Honestly, I like red wipes better, since they are cheaper/faster, but Obliterator doesn't go well with them. I strongly recommend Night of Souls' Betrayal in Oblitzkrieg - huge trump card against Affinity, Infect and Snapcaster decks.
Thanks, man. I like the list. Tons of value. Anger AND Pyroclasm in the side, huh?
Hello there guys, it's been a while... So, I ran Living End during Eldrazi Winter and then took the AV hype train with UB Faeries first and Jeskai Control now. However, I kept checking the thread out now and then. Nice to see new faces btw!
Is anyone here going to the GP? I wish I could, but oh well. Anyway, I'm switching back to Blitzkrieg Save for Tron, the deck can handle the top tier pretty well. Jund, Affinity and Infect are still great MUs, Jeskai Control is our new U-deck to prey upon (like Twin was) and both Burn and Company are manageable with the right SB cards.
Also, I tested a vampire-ish deck back when SOI came out. It was my stock list, running Falkenrath Gorger, Assylum Vistor and Kalitas instead of Abbot, Pyromancer and Angler. It was OK and I like Visitor the most, but it felt like a win-more card and my stock list felt just a lot better overall. Heh, better late than never they say. I'll keep you guys informed about future tests and results
May we see your full deck list, acc95?
I'm planning on going to GP L.A., but I'm not sure which iteration of the deck I wanna run. I'm liking either Raystack's most current list which is heavier on the discard and runs Obliterator(my pet card), or Delverofthemany's more streamlined list.
Great thread and deck. I've been playing versions of it for the last few weeks with moderate success. If played properly, it's pretty explosive and intimidating. The look on peoples' faces when I stick an Obliterator is priceless, and he's a great attack deterrent.
What are some opinions on Demigod of Revenge or Asylum Visitor having a place in the deck? They both interact well with Liliana and provide explosive finishes and card draw, respectively.
Also, there is a specific interaction with the trigger and Ruins. You can cast a creature, and with Mimic's ability on the stack, put a counter on the creature Mimic will copy. The copied P/T includes the counter.
In other words, I could go Mimic T2, and then Mimic T3, put a counter on the second one with Ruins while the first one's trigger is on the stack. When everything is resolved, the first Mimic will be a 3/2 for the turn.
One of my opponents on Game Day convinced me that this wasn't allowed.. I should've called the judge over, dangit!
How do you guys feel about Liliana, Heretical Healer in the side? Seems like she could help get us cards in the graveyard, as well as Delvers and Snapcasters back for some good value. She also has lifelink, so if she doesn't flip, she at least helps mitigate some of the early life loss we take. She also works well with Sidisi's Faithful, who might have a place in a rogue version of the deck.
Faithful doesn't work in delver at all. If you want bounce effects, just play vapor snag. As to LHH, that actually isn't a terrible idea. I'm not sure what you would cut for it, but I could definitely see that coming in in the really grindy matchups.
Yeah, Sidisi's faithful doesn't really fit. I was just trying out some different ideas. I think Liliana could come in for either a Young Pyromancer or a Gurmag Angler from the side in a grindier match.

Yeah, against any non elf Abzan, I would imagine infinite obl is pretty amazing since we know they would have Siege Rhino and to a lesser extent, Anafenza. Maybe against Abzan, board in two Seeker of the Way to get the prowess and life link or even better, hidden dragon slayer. Anafenza and Rhino are both great targets, and you get a 3/2 with life link.
Yeah Duress/TtM def have a place in our deck, maybe even 1 of each in the main. How did you do against R/G landfall. That is a fairly slow deck that has the ability to outclass late game if not kept in check. Though I would imagine CD would be pretty good against it.
Another thought as a one of in the sideboard is Descent of the Dragons. It's an expensive sweeper but by the time you can cast it turn 6, it should basically win you the game.
Hidden Dragonslayer sounds like a good sideboard card for the reasons you mentioned. I'm not sure about Descent of Dragons. Seems like it could be good, but I haven't played with it. I dunno.
I did pretty well against R/G Landfall. Their creatures can get pretty big, but Crackling Doom puts in work. Also, once their creatures shrink back down and they're all tapped out, Draconic Roar and even Wild Slash get the job done. Bring in Radiant Flames from the side and they're crippled pretty badly. They have some interesting synergy with Outpost Siege into Abbot into Swiftspear, but I think our late game is stronger.
Butcher + Hangarback seems to be pretty good...Sure it's like living a dream but I've done in testing and yeah. Followed up with Sorin, the damage output can be explosive.
@Spinifex, Mardu is getting attention but in a Jeskai Shell. Which is interesting because without Doom that Shell is much weaker. The issue is the mana base, Mardu's Mana base suffers due to needing to splash more tap lands than most decks atm.
But Charm is Instant speed removal which seems huge right now.
I sleeved this up and tested it today.. Played several games against Abzan Midrange and won half of the ten or so games we played. Their early threats are stronger than ours, and Anafenza wrecks our early game reliance on Hangarback, but if we can hang on to turns 4-7, we really start to shine. Sarkhan and Sorin are strong and work well together. Dashing Kolagan wins games out of nowhere. Butcher doesn't even need to swing when he drops.
I played maybe another six games against R/G landfall. Again, their early game is very strong, but they're pretty vulnerable once their turn is over and all the fetches have been cracked.
I really enjoyed the deck and it felt very much like the old Mardu Dragons list. Stormbreath is missed, but Kolagan is still a solid finisher and Sarkhan got better post-rotation. I would probably keep the main deck as-is, but I might make some changes to the sideboard. I feel like Ob Nixilis has a place in the 75, as does maybe Infinite Obliteration. Duress/Transgress the Mind. I dunno. Gonna tinker with it a bit.
Well, if you run a set of Gifted Aetherborn and two Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet main, and two Collective Brutality in the side, that should mitigate a lot of burn damage.
In addition to the Vampiric Link you mentioned, I guess you could always try Basilisk Collar or Pharika's Cure?

I should probably stick with something closer to Delverofthemany's list. Or oven Raystack's more classic build. A lot less greedy for sure 😄
4 Faithless Looting
3 Inquisition of Kozilek
3 Lightning Helix
4 Lingering Souls
3 Kolaghan's Command
2 Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet
4 Bloodghast
4 Asylum Visitor
3 Gurmag Angler
2 Liliana of the Veil
1 Nahiri, the Harbinger
1 Ajani Vengeant
3 Blood Crypt
3 Godless Shrine
4 Bloodstained Mire
4 Polluted Delta
4 Swamp
2 Mountain
2 Dragonskull Summit
2 Nihil Spellbomb
2 Pyroclasm
2 Dreadbore
1 Kolaghan's Command
1 Engineered Explosives
2 Wear // Tear
2 Fulminator Mage
1 Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet
Basically just trying to maximize value from Faithless Looting, Liliana, and Nahiri. Thoughts? Does this deck even belong in this thread anymore?
