In Mono Black there is only one instance even remotely close to Dark Impostor...Shauku, Endbringer...and Dark Impostor curb stomps Shauku. The ability to use leftover mana to remove threats is just insane...let alone multiple times...and your creature gets a bonus on top of all that...WOW.
I am actually selling off my pimp OB deck as well. I have been working on an alternate art project for this deck for quite some time...and I am almost finished.
I am glad that you still play the deck Gavvin...it is one of my most prized decks...and I am still hopeful that they will do a mono color set soon so we can get some new goodies. How pissed were you with Extort that it was hybrid and thus unable to be used in here?
After playing this deck some more...I have realized that Dark Impostor is becoming one of my favorite cards. It is so busted in this deck.
Not a lot has changed in the deck in the past year. There have been some really good cards...but none that really fit the deck. Here is what has changed:
Dark Impostor - This has to be the stand out addition to this deck. It is absolutely nuts in this deck. So many times this deck just passes the turn and waits to react to something. So many times mana is simply wasted because there isn't anything to do with it. This card solve this problem. The fact that he gets larger and gains the exiled creatures abilities is not relevant. This dude exiles multiple creatures without having to tap. This is INSANE!!! For the love of God try out this card.
Kokusho, the Evening Star - Everyone that I have played against recently has commented on the fact that Kokusho is not in the deck. Well...he was. The problem is that I have absolutely no way to abuse him. A 5/5 Flier for 4BB sucks...and thats basically what he is in this deck. I am basically giving other decks a tool. When I play him...I have effectively given them a win condition. When another deck can take better advantage of a card than your deck...you cut it. I remember begging for him to come off the banned list...and that he is...he doesn't make the cut.
There are quite a few cards that I am eyeballing trying to figure out if they belong in the deck. What do you think?
Bloodgift Demon - A walking Phyrexian Arena seems like a no brainer right? I just don't think he is needed. Great card...just impressive enough to make the cut.
Bloodline Keeper - I just don't think this card is the right fit for this deck. A constant supply of 2/2 Fliers seems pretty good though.
Geth, Lord of the Vault - I recently cut this card because someone offered me three times the going rate for my foil copy...after he was gone I replaced him with Increasing Ambition and never really found him to be a loss. He is a card that will forever be my 101st card. I would imagine that he fights for Beacon of Unrests spot.
Killing Wave - I really like this card. My biggest complaint about it is that it gives a choice to your opponent. I love the fact that it gets by indestructibility...I am just really undecided on it.
Thespian's Stage - An almost replacement for Vesuva. I am torn which I like better. The ability to be played, copy, and use all in the same turn is extremely appealing. Then again playing both seems like a no brainer. However I can't afford to go below 15 Snow-Covered Swamps...and there really isn't any other lands that I want to remove...sigh. Dark Depths has been on my watch list for a while. The question that is then asked is...another Vesuva better than a situational win condition?
Lord of the Void - This is a huge beater that gives card advantage. It is like Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni that doesn't need a creature to piggy-back. However he isn't a surprise either. I really like this guy.
Sepulchral Primordial - They have made all the Primordials extremely good. They are the new Titans. I really wish they had followed the fairly recent recursioneffects in black rather than sticking with just creatures.but...that may have been a little broken. With that said...this guy is bonkers.
Do you agree with all this? Did I miss an obvious inclusion?
Thanks for stopping by. Please post your ideas, concerns, or post by rolling your face on your keyboard.
a. Will I receive a "Glen Elendra Archmage with both a +1/+1 counter and a -1/-1 counter on it? <---Which will negate itself...effectively allowing a reusable Negate.
The only problem is, by getting rid of the penny you will cause a bit of inflation. While I think it would create savings I'd like to wait and see what effect it has before following suit. In the meantime, I strongly believe that the us should phase out the paper dollar in favor of the dollar coin.
This is a good point. It would be at most a $0.04 increase in whatever you buy. Odds are it would be on everything...and the seller would blame it on the removal of the penny. This is something to keep in mind though when discussing this.
I think Killing Wave is better than Dash Hopes or Temporal Extortion. I would not look at it as a Damnation, but as a very flexible black burn spell.
I agree that it will take some testing to see if it is a good fit or optimal amount to cast it for, but I think it COULD be good.
I agree that it is better than Dash Hopes and Temporal Extortion...my point was that it may have the same fate as both of those cards. When X benefits you Y will always be chosen.
Given that he is a late game finisher and the deck does perfectly well leaving him in the command zone until then... Would Griselbrand make more sense as the general? Card draw on demand and you don't have to worry about Bribery. Maybe the deck needs a little tweaking to make it work around him, but this is a pretty solid MBC build at the core that could be headed by ANY black general.
I agree that it is very tempting. This is going to come down to play preference. Maybe I have just played this deck for so long but...I just can't see myself switching. The differences in the decks post General swap would probably be minimal. A little more ramping would probably be a good idea. I just really enjoy the, "Oh ****. I didn't see that play." that Ob Nixilis, the Fallen has. I guess that really wouldn't be any different than any other general though.
I guess this just falls back to the old, "Try it out." Let's be honest though...Mono Black Control is just ridiculous if you can stall for a few turns regardless of who the general is. Find one that you like and stick with him.
Well, it looks like Ob Nix may get some new toys to play with.
Killing Wave looks like it could fit in here.
Griselbrand looks nuts, although I am not sure that he shouldn't be the general in place of Ob Nix. Assuming you don't go the fast combo rout, an MBC deck like this would love the card draw.
My first thought when I saw Killing Wave was :o. However the more and more I read it...I am a little confused by it. When I need the Damnation...it will fail unless I over pump "X". This seems like the next generation of Dash Hopes or Temporal Extortion. I will most definitely be testing it out though.
Griselbrand seems just...well...insane. It is what I always want Necropotence to do. It is so good that I am willing to look past the fact that it will always be the target for Bribery. Wow...just wow.
I hope this thread picks back up. With all the Black goodness...I would image that it will.
tldr: Play Dark Impostor. Your welcome.

Descent into Madness - Smokestack has always been a card that I have loved. However I am very greedy and hate giving permanents away. If I took this deck a little farther towards tokens...I think this would make the deck. Bloodline Keeper, Bitterblossom, Grave Titan, Breeding Pool, etc...
Grave Betrayal - This is like half a Sheoldred, the Whispering One. Seems really really powerful after Damnation. This is seriously being considered and tested.
Killing Wave - I really like this card. My biggest complaint about it is that it gives a choice to your opponent. I love the fact that it gets by indestructibility...I am just really undecided on it.
Reaper from the Abyss - This was my cut for Dark Impostor. They effectively do the same thing...only Dark Impostor does it better.
Thespian's Stage - An almost replacement for Vesuva. I am torn which I like better. The ability to be played, copy, and use all in the same turn is extremely appealing. The Mimeoplasm is copying Glen Elendra Archmage and a random one power creature. If I sacrifice The Mimeoplasm what creature will return to play?
a. Will I receive a "Glen Elendra Archmage with both a +1/+1 counter and a -1/-1 counter on it? <---Which will negate itself...effectively allowing a reusable Negate.
b. Will I receive a "Glen Elendra Archmage with a -1/-1 counter on it?
c. Will I receive a 0/0 Creature?
Bonus question: If the answer is either "a" or "b" do I have the option of exiling another / more creatures?
4 Black Vise
2 Black Lotus
1 Ancestral Recall
I thought it was funny.
1. Play both Black Lotus.
2. Crack both for UUUUUU.
3. Play all four Black Vise.
4. Cast Ancestral Recall on your opponent.
5. Pass the turn.
Seems like I might dust off Brion Stoutarm for some amazing FU finishes. Hopefully I can make a few tables flip.
I literally laughed out loud.
