I've thought about this a lot lately. My wifes grandmother has maybe two more months to live. Right now, she's on a couple machines. They are large but somewhat portable, and she attends family cookouts and whatnot - on her machines. If she speaks for more than a few minutes, she's gasping for breath and needs to rest.

Why do we (as humans) do it

    Why does she do it

After roughly 32,000 days of life, Is every additional day that precious? Is suffering in that state worth one more cookout? Are the costs worth it? I guess that's up to the individual to decide.

Do we sometimes take each and every day for granted - get up, shower, go to work for 10 hours, sit in front of the TV after dinner....

    Hmm.

Its strange. When I was in my twenties, I didn't really have a fear of death. I had no spouse or children at that time. No house or commitments of that nature either. Since that period of my life, all of that is now untrue, and I want to live as long as I possibly can. But even then, I do not want to live in that state.

Once you're at the end... the kids have grown, the husband already passed, and your living in this state - would not one accept death? Close the book, to say. Or take off the cloak, and walk with death as equals. My father has a very accepting view of death, and talked about its inevitability frequently. I think that's why I carry the same mentality.

As an observation, my father devoutly believes in god. He truly believes there's something better waiting for him, and that he'll be reunited with loved ones. I guess an atheist like myself only has the blackness to look forward to; one day suddenly no longer existing as a conscious thinking person.

B: Tyranny of the majority and abandonment of rationality are two of the dangers of a democracy, and both of them are taking place here, arguably.

I would hardly call voting against your country being part of a larger governing body "Tyranny".

And what examples for this supposed dictatorial behaviour do they have?

Why? You just said "every logical view suggests its a bad move." If every logical view suggests it's a bad move, then why should anyone respect it?

Topic of regrets aside for a moment

Because its a basic fundamental of democracy. The majority if people in that region want this for themselves. So while you or I may believe that's a stupid decision, its their decision. What's actually driving it doesn't matter. And all too often, despite the majority of people in a region choosing something for themselves, some entity steps in and tells them what's good for them and how its going to be. Half the time we don't even get to vote on the crap, its just passed and put in place. Or its simply done.

    .......

Then on the topic of regret, I bet a lot of that is because the rest of the world and their own government is painting the situation like the sky is falling. But many Britts (and Scots) on my LINE are pretty happy about it overall. Many believe the EU acts like a dictatorship.

Fully understanding this can sometimes give you a big edge in magic.

    Example 1.

Your opponent attacks you without openly declaring that he or she is moving to the combat phase, you can tap that creature by backing up the game to the beginning of combat step. This is the obvious example highlighted in previous posts. Its worth noting the obvious - that you can back up the game to tap a different creature, if you suspect your opponent is using the example below.

    Example 2.

You propose a shortcut by declaring that you will attack with a creature, guessing that your opponent will back you up and tap that creature. Back up the game to the beginning of combat step, and confirm that he or she wants to tap that creature. Then attack with the creature you actually wanted to hit with. You'll often have to defend this action, but if you fully understand these rules and explain what you are doing then you'll be covered. If you feel uncomfortable with the idea of the "proposed shortcut" then you can simply move quickly with the same result.

For these reason, when there's an icy effect in play, most seasoned players will make it very clear they are moving to the combat phase and give the opponent a moment to respond. It keeps the game straightforward.

I think its important, even if every logical view suggests its a bad move.

Obviously, half or more of their people felt this way. You have to respect that. It reflects the problems in our own country. Our nation is obviously divided on many issues, especially immigration. The only voice that most people will ever have, is their vote. And this is the way the system is supposed to work. Its a significant event that's decided by the people and I hope its actually upheld.

Its one thing to claim to act in favor of a group in private and then go on TV and claim a reporter is on her period or that “It’s certainly not groundbreaking news that the early victories by the women on ‘The Apprentice’ were, to a very large extent, dependent on their sex appeal.” or that “Like you wouldn’t have your job if you weren’t beautiful.” or that Hillary would be a poor president because her husband was once unfaithful. You can say what you want about Clinton but she is not sexist and Trump is very clearly sexist.

Is any of that really sexist? Or is it just blunt honesty?

We've had plenty of terrible but HOT secretaries here at the office who were clearly hired for their looks.
Our local bar ONLY hires hot bartenders. All five of them are hot. Two of them are decent bartenders.
(PS I might mention the LEGS are in back in season)
Supermodels are supermodels because they are hot
Hot chicks pose for car calendars because they are hot.

Time warner and AT&T hire sales people who are hot. They come to my door. They have big big cleavage. Grin My lady yells at me to "send that cable lady away" (lol) All across the country, hot chicks are hired because they are hot. That's just how it is. GOD FORBID someone actually say it - that's sexist.

And on the last bit - lots of people I've talked to think that Clinton is a weak character because she didn't leave Bill. It wasn't just an affair among common folk and two people trying to work things out. Its the POTUS and the first lady for gods sake, and it was EVERYWHERE. It STILL IS. Nothing sexist for sharing that belief

Not listed here, but calling someone a fat pig isn't sexist either.

I absolutely agree that there are gay people who take displays of affection too far, just as there are in any group. However, I must disagree with this:

I don't believe that most people see a peck on the cheek, a well timed kiss or hand holding as offensive or pandering.

I would argue that it depends on where you are. I live in a deeply conservative, very religious area. I've personally been jeered for holding my boyfriend's hand in public. I had great service at a restaurant until the server saw me kiss my boyfriend on the cheek as he sat down (he was slightly late because of car troubles). Afterwards we received horrible service, only seeing our waiter once in an hour's timeframe despite the building being almost empty.

I imagine that in larger cities or more accepting areas that this is less likely to happen, but in smaller towns and more religious areas (which is a large chunk of America) these things are commonplace. Most people don't notice, since it doesn't happen to them, but it's definitely there.

The commercial deal is a bit more complicated. I understand that there is often an agenda at work in the commercials. However, every commercial has an agenda: to get you to buy their stuff. The methods have evolved over the years, but it's always there. My problem is that some people don't realize this and view anything deviating from a straight, white male (or female depending on the product being marketed, but usually male) is somehow pandering or pushing an agenda while simultaneously ignoring (or perhaps not realizing) the fact that commercials with said straight, white male as the protagonist are the most pandering commercials there are.

Shifting gears slightly, even today commercials with non-white couples (or, god forbid, an interracial couple) are seen as pandering or pushing some nefarious liberal agenda, despite the growing non-white population in America. Cheerios released a commercial last year (if I remember correctly) featuring an interracial couple that received serious blowback for something so benign. Ads featuring gay couples often fall into this category, with people not realizing that the agenda at play is merely to appeal to a slightly different audience and get said audience to purchase their things.

That's why I have such a problem with this. Some people go into a rage whenever a non-straight person is featured in anything and see it as pandering or pushing an agenda, no matter how tastefully done or if it fits the plot/narrative (in the case of a movie or book). Anything that deviates from the default is seen as bad and threatening.

I too enjoyed your post, so thank you for that.

Thank you! I'm glad to hear it.

That's interesting. I live in a mostly white city with above average incomes, but you don't really see racism or bigotry until you visit the lower income housing or dive bars. The people here have a solid sense of community; if you're here, you're here for the same reasons we are. We "read" about the race war in America. What you see here is mostly reverse racism if you can believe that. But its very fair to say that since I'm a straight white male (oh god I just labeled myself) that it might be there, and I simply don't experience it myself.

You would definitely experience it if you drove out to the country - Ohio has its fair share of good 'ol boys and simpletons.

And I feel the same way about the scene in commercials! Why does EVERYONE have to have a spotless, immaculate beautiful home? If the commercial had two men making dinner together, I'd think that's ridiculous - did they JUST BUY that house? Obviously no children there.. I get to the end of the house, and the first room I painted needs a fresh paint.

    Quote from Highroller »
But that's the point, though. Gay people publicly making out or holding hands many times results in people reacting differently than straight people doing the same.

A common example is adult lap sitting. Its awkward to see an adult woman sitting in a mans lap at the bar. That is inappropriate behavior.
    Why?

I don't know what country we're discussing, but if this is the US, and it's not like, I don't know, an expensive bar, and it's a couple, who cares?

Holding hands and making out are two different things. We'll talk about making out. Its really silly to split hairs over whether an action thats disrespectful to everyone around them is MORE or LESS offensive based on their sexuality. But yes, when its same sex it comes with an added 'shock' factor because its pulling people out of their element. I don't think that can be changed - its just not commonplace enough to make everyone comfortable with it at all times.

    Bars...

Well yes we tend to stick to higher end places - martini bars and cocktail lounges, as there are more like-minded people we can associate with, and less plaid covered ruffians looking for the first excuse they can find to start a physical confrontation. We do frequent one hole in the wall, as our mixed drinks are $2.50 during happy hour and we know people there. There you will see more racism and bigotry - its a direct correlation. But even there, word would travel fast if two people of any sex were making out in the back room. My only concern here is that with so many CCW now, and people who ignore the CCW laws - what used to be a ruffian fist fight outside of the bar might someday become a ruffian shooting, but thats a whole different topic I think. Best course of action is to be polite to everyone =)

Humans as a whole broadcast sexuality. You can barely watch a movie without there being a love plot somewhere in there. We're bombarded day in and day out by commercials and advertisements, books and movies all containing some form of romance or sexuality. A husband buys a new Toyota for his wife, what a good husband. A girl puts on some good lipstick and gets the guy she was after, who share a tender kiss as the narrator drops the company's name. Your friend on Facebook announces that he's engaged to the girl he's been dating for months. The comments are all fawning over them, congratulating them and proclaiming how lucky they are, how happy they must be.

Gay people feel the same way as straight people. Humans love to broadcast their relationships. However, when gay people do it, it's seen as fake, fabricated. Two guys hold hands in a commercial: OMG SO MUCH PANDERING! A woman kisses her wife on the cheek as she shows her their new car: why do gay people have to shove it in their faces? A guy announces he's engaged on Facebook: I'm happy for you and all but I have to voice my opinion that gay marriage is wrong and I'm sad that you have to force it on us all the time.

I don't believe that most people see a peck on the cheek, a well timed kiss or hand holding as offensive or pandering. Acts that are naturally inappropriate in public do offend people, since the social standard of decency isn't being upheld. A common example is adult lap sitting. Its awkward to see an adult woman sitting in a mans lap at the bar. That is inappropriate behavior. Being gay doesn't suddenly make it appropriate. And since most people know its inappropriate, its perceived as an intentional statement. My uncle did that very thing to my grandmother. Oh it worked.

I myself understand that some people come screaming out of the closet in a 'gayplosion' and the standard of social decency often gets stomped on until it simmers. But people with limited interaction might be left with a lasting impression that its "in their face all the time".

In regard to the commercials, that is more complicated. As harmless as that example is, its seen as driven by agenda because this is an ongoing issue in America. Like the coke commercial, its designed to stir the pot. They knew it would before it hit the airwaves. That's perceived as a jab against those who don't share those views. The android commercials are awesome. "Be together, not the same". Other commercials imply "We think this way, and so should you" that is an agenda.

I too enjoyed your post, so thank you for that.

    Just to clear the air.

Whether its a duel deck or not, its the only list given to start with. Its the only list of cards to comment on.

You did post in the multiplayer forum, so you will receive multiplayer comments and perspectives on the deck list you started with. So discussing whether a card fits or not isn't "in the wrong forum".

Furthermore, I asked if you had played it because of your own statement which implied you are new to serious levels of legacy. Late last year implying a couple months, and UW miracles being one of the more complex decks to play.

"also love Legacy, but have been more of a dabbler in it until later last year. "

You also remarked in the original post about the time spent fiddling, which is why I commented on that as well.

I believe you were overly defensive about it. Personally I do not stalk people on the forum, taking note of their skill levels or experience. All we have to work with is what was posted.

"Looks like the original response from YamahaR1 was edited to remove the question about whether or not I have played this deck before"

Yes, after your first somewhat negative reaction I reread both posts and concluded that you have played it before, and corrected it. Now if you set a presidence that its dangerous to post things with only the best intentions of helping someone, and that we must walk on eggshells then threads who do need it - or people interested in UW miracles, suffer. There are already enough dangers in here, like posting a card over 20 bucks, or posting a 3 dollar card when theres a $20 alternative. Or posting combo.

Lake of the dead is repeatable. Repeatable until the end of the game, or until its removed. Both have their merits, and you can run both. Its good friends with life spent for cards, and hangs out with cards like Dethrite shaman too. There are better cards... say... Lotus. But lake is five bucks. It can tap for B as well, so its not sacking lands every turn, and it can help you play big creatures a little faster in the mid game

As far as fair, or degenerate, or how long we want to play; all playgroups are different. We dislike hour long magic with stuck board states, people watching TV or running off to go the bathroom or do shots because the game is taking so long, and the new arrival has to wait like.. forever. And of course, its not like plans are never foiled, ever

Yes, I forgot Luminarch Ascension as a completely viable win con next to the other two. Its also a (2), and can be fetched with EL.

Last thought for now, if you play 2HG/3HG then Temporal Mastery becomes a lot more valuable. As a stand alone player, getting another chance to look at your top 3 cards doesn't change much. If you're using ascension or entreat as a win con, it can give you another turn to attack (or haste them, in a sense)

I've been playing UW miracles for a long time.

Don't worry about the higher casting costs in multiplayer. Shutting down 1-5 is plenty enough. Anything larger than that, use you're removal or a hard counter.

You will need hard counters. Emergencies happen. I don't think 1 counterspell suffices. I'm using Swan Song right now because of its 1 mana cost. I usually play in giants games though so I have a teamate to deal with the 2/2 flyer. Counterspell is in the sideboard as needed. Some decks run FoW. (Edit: Looking back, I see that FoW is in the list)

I don't see a real value in Snapcaster Mage here. I don't see why you have Monastery Mentor either, unless your desperate for blockers. Take care of your problems with counters, Terminus and other options like Supreme Verdict or Detention Sphere. In multiplayer I run with Wing Shards

My only creature is Linvala, Keeper of Silence. This is subjective of course.

The top in multiplayer is more of a mental game than anything. Having all of your opponents intimidated to cast or holding back spells is its real power. Then wing shards and terminus keeps them intimidated to attack. After a few rounds of hardcore countering, most players start to sit and rot assuming it will be countered.

You have two real win conditions

Entreat the Angels, which is harder to win with in multiplayer
Helm of Obedience with Rest in Peace

RIP also takes down reanimator and dredge decks.

The red really complicates things. Blood moon hoses yourself. The blasts are just redundant counters. The only advantage I'm seeing here is additional fetch lands, to reshuffle. You'll need a lot of reshuffle. Kills me when I use the top and see 3 lands coming mid game.

The top fiddling doesn't take as long as you might think. You know what your top 3 cards are, you know whats in your hand, you know if you can counter something, and it doesn't take all that long to do so. Once your in a position with a 2, 3 and 4 on the top of your library its pretty smooth sailing. At the end of the previous guys turn, rig your draw. I don't tend to counter 1's, unless its a sol ring or another top. The only times its a lengthy process is emergencies, such as

Top (nope) fetch land to reshuffle, top (nope), Enlightented Tutor to go get the appropriate CMC, reshuffle and place that card on top; reveal

Simple setups like using Brainstorm to move a card from your hand, to the top of your library, or brainstorm to trigger a miracle isn't very time consuming

The more you play it, the faster it becomes, the less mistakes made as well, eventually becoming the least fun deck to play against - lol.
