Hi everyone.....been out for awhile but things are shaping up for me to hopefully get back into the game. I played Stompy on MTGO and fell in love with it. Avatar was a beast and Collected Company was just coming around.
My question is "Is the Collected Stompany simply better than the traditional Stompy?". I'm wanting to get back into Paper Magic so I'm using those price points.
I ran a 20 land version early in testing and rarely flooded out. I even had Dungroves in it and they performed well enough. Yea a 3/3 or a 4/4 isn't the bomb we need but a Rancor'd Hexproof threat is difficult for a lot of decks to handle.
Not saying it's the end all, be all but it worked for me
Just seems like you'd be better off committing to Gruul if you're wanting to go this route. It's been pretty well established that splashing for pretty much any color only makes this deck a worse version of those other archetypes.
That's always been my biggest fault when playing Magic. Knowing when to play smart and knowing when to go for the kill which I know just comes with experience playing the deck. I just always have to tendency to waltz right into a 2 for 1 and losing the pressure and then the game.
The potential with Ram Gang sure looks nice though.
T1- E1
T2- SRG, E1 evolves, swing for 4
T3- Ram Gang, E1 evolves again, swinging for 8(Assuming Geist is still 2/1)
T4- Opponent sitting at 8 life and staring down lethal and we haven't used a single pump spell.
@User, Deglamer and Unravel the Aether are essentially the same card. Oversight or just like the flavors?
@chirsinator, I don't know if the Hydra has been tested but it seems like it would be little more than a cute trick. It might steal a game but it seems like it takes too much work to make it work reliably. Collected Company is a card I want to make work but my testing shows it too little, too late most of the time. It's awesome to drop double Baloths but it sucks balls to catch double Militant or Militant/E1
@HugeElfBoy....thanks for the reports. Like I said, I'm getting close to being comfortable enough with this deck to start doing Dailies and the Queues so any and all reports are valuable information
To everyone else, would you recommend Daily Events or the 2 or 8 man Queues for starting the competitive online scene?
Back at ElfBoy....ironically enough my latest iteration of the deck has 20(or 21) lands and I'm currently rocking 4 Dungrove Elders with 3 Leatherback Baloths. I got tired of my Baloths getting Abrupt Decay'd or Path to Exile'd. I added 3 Ranger's Guile as a little more "counterspell". So far, no issues on the mana. My Dungroves may come down as a 3/3 but usually end up in the 5/5+ range before game is over and so far, they've been effective. Maybe not the right call but in my games, I seem to lose more to a timely removal spell more than nearly every other possibility. Dungrove laughs at that.
I wouldn't mind seeing those reports HugeElfBoy.....I'm getting to the point where I'm almost comfortable enough to start doing my own 8-mans and Dailies
Has Courser of Cruphix ever been a consideration for this deck? Perhaps a bit too midrange and doesn't have the straight power of Baloth, however, the life gain I would imagine could be useful and being able to draw out your lands has some merit for Dungrove Elder and Scooze.
And has it ever been tested to somehow splash Red for Blood Moon? It would hurt our Villages and Canopies, yes, but a lot of decks just straight fold to it.
Not really. I mean, if you really wanted to sure, they do the same thing, but Gut Shot is able to be cast without the use of mana. Makes it far more versatile since we aren't required to keep mana open for it.
So here's a potentially stupid question but I'm genuinely curious.
I've been wanting to invest in Modern. I currently only play Mono G Stompy as it it didn't require much money to accumulate the necessary cards but as I've played the format a bit, I've grown to prefer playing Modern and am looking to begin assembling a T1/2 deck. I have a love affair with casting gigantic creatures so I've settled on RG Tron.
My question is, "Will the release of MM2 affect online prices at all? Or will online prices pretty much stay the same?"
I'm willing to invest in $25+ Karns and the like, but if they're gonna drop in price, I may as well wait. But I wasn't really sure how the digital economy of the game really worked
I mean I run 3x Scooze main and was only running 1 Relic. But this was a Splinter Twin/Living End deck.
Game 1, I thought I had him. He cast Exarch, then Twin. I counter his Twin with Vines, then attack on my turn. He attempts to block my Militant with the Exarch. I pump the Militant to kill his Exarch. I'm feeling pretty good. Then BOOM....Living End and his graveyard coughs up 6 creatures, all bigger than I what I had.
G2....he gets his Living End off on T3, maybe 4. I had a 5/1 E1, he kills it, and then Living Ends for 3 creatures. I was out of creatures in hand so I conceded. Didn't think I'd be able to recover at that point

Money IS a factor so 20 a pop for Collected Company is steep. But 50 a pop for Noble Hierarch is even steeper. Is Hierarch truly needed? Or can a Llanowar Elves or Avacyn's Pilgrim function well enough until I can get the Nobles?
Not saying it's the end all, be all but it worked for me
However, it requires splashing for white. This deck does not particularly want to do that otherwise we could simply play Hatebears
