This seems like a really dead thread for a deck that is pretty sweet. Is there a discord or Facebook group? Where is everyone!?

I like the list. You have Goblin Chieftain listed twice, so I assume one of them is Goblin Warchief. Which one is the 4-of and which is the 2-of?

So my thoughts on this deck and my first iteration is to max out on the sac effects, refueling with Ringleader and cutting costs with Frogtosser Banneret and Goblin Warchief. Something like this:

This configuration only leaves three slots. The obvious glut is at 3cc and Pashalik Mons is legendary, so I think it would be good to trim that by one. I also think we could trim a Warchief or two. That leaves 4-6 slots to play with. Here are the other cards I would like to get in:

I feel like we need to have a good curve, so I would like to be at 10-12 one drops. To start, I would add some Knucklebone Witches to fit the theme of expendable goblins.

We definitely need at least three Munitions Experts. To make room for these, I think we should trim two Goblin Warchief.

So here is where I plan to start:

Admittedly, this deck would be very weak to Plague Engineer, but that would be post board and such is the life of goblins.

I left out cute one-ofs like Siege-Gang Commander, Krenko, Mob Boss, and Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker to lower the CMC, though I could be convinced of adding a Krenko as a follow up to Sling-Gang Lieutenant to just win the game.

I may be going too hot and heavy on the passive damage given by Sling-Gang Lieutenant and it may be correct to trim one, but I want to try the full set.

Sideboard-wise, I think all of these are reasonable inclusions:

Are there any easier ways to buff our goblins as a hedge against sweepers such as Anger of the Gods or Plague Engineer? Is anyone running a build focused on the life drain from Pashalik Mons and Sling-Gang Lieutenant?

    Fire, aim, ready goblin players!

(Edited because I forgot about Knucklebone Witch, a card I have from way back in the day and inspired this version.)

    1. In decks where the number of artifacts matter, the artifact lands are so good they are banned in some formats. See cards like Cranial Plating, Arcbound Ravager, and Myr Enforcer to see where these are excellent despite the fact they can be destroyed by artifact destruction.

    2. Think of it this way: Something that flies can move to the ground or stay in the air. The other creature can only be on the ground.

    3. Yes, unless the card reads “until end of turn.”

    4. The counters permanently stay on the creatures. The spell does not deal damage to a player, but to a creature. So every creature with a +1 counter on it deals damage to the chosen creature. In the example you gave, the spell would deal two damage to your creature. Then he would move to his attack step and attack with the 2/2 creature. You could then choose to block, killing both creatures, or take two damage.

    5. A creature entering tapped is summoning sick like most other creatures the turn they are cast. Being tapped means it also cannot block until it untaps. It also cannot be used to help cast spells that require creatures to tap, such as using the keyword ability Convoke on Venerated Loxodon to help cast the card.

I hope that helps some. Magic is a complex game, but this is the place to find answers! Good luck!

I don’t think I would run goblin grenade or lightning bolt in the ringleader build just to improve our chances of hitting with ringleader. I know 3 is more than 2, but maybe tarfire instead?

Of course I could be wrong as lightning bolt is the best red card in modern...

Still need Ringleader to make the midrange Goblins a thing in Modern. And since we are dreaming, Incinerator, too.

I really like the idea of banning a couple things to make more decks viable. I have everything for every deck in pauper, but I haven’t played for quite some time and I stopped even scanning decklists because they are all the same: Delver, Boros Monarch, Tron. Stale to say the least.

I am a high school English teacher. I have not used Magic in the classroom for lessons, but we do have a Magic club that plays at the end of the day during homeroom. I wrote a piece in defense of Magic in a school setting that you can find here.

A lone Sin Collector was indeed what I brought in. The game I did win two weeks ago saw me roll him game 2 with a Champion/Lieutenant/Image draw with Aether Vial that got him Turn 3. Game 3 I had him on the ropes and hellbent. He topdecked a Titan to decimate my board and get back his Scapeshift from Freebooter for the win the following turn. The redundancy is definitely what gets you!

Maybe another Sin Collector is in order. And chalk it up as a bit of a rough match up.

Thank you all for your advice. I stuck with the standard mana base and had no problems Friday night, going 3-1. My one loss was again to Titan Shift. It seems like they always have a timely bolt or just get there a turn sooner than I do. In side boarding, I found that I don’t have much to bring in for them. What is the usual plan?

    Again, thanks for the feedback!

That’s kind of what I figured, I was just a little irritated by it but it should be a rarity. Here is a list from Jukelox7 that trimmed 2 Ancient Ziggurat and went 5-0. Not sure how I feel about using Gemstone Mine and Mana Confluence though. Wouldn’t Seachrome Coast or Razorverge Thicket be better?

Forgive me if this has been covered in the 85 pages of this post, but I am seeing lists that reduce the number of Ancient Ziggurats, presumably for sideboard options. I ran into a situation where I had to mulligan my game 3 hand with a Ziggurat, Aether Vial, and all 2-3 drops. I then went through 2 no-landers (I almost kept at 5 because I had Hierarchs and whatnot) but ended up going down to four. I still almost won against TitanShift but couldn't quite get there. Any other land in my opening 7 and I feel like I beat him, so I want to trim 1-2 Ziggurats simply so I can more reliably cast that Aether Vial on turn 1.

My first thought was to replace a Ziggurat with another Seachrome Coast, but think a Razorverge Thicket would be better if the goal is to be able to cast the 1 drops more consistently (Noble Hierarch).

So, I guess my question is this: Should I simply just chalk this up to variance and bad luck on the mulls, or is this a recurring issue with this deck? If it is an issue, how do you all deal with it? Or do the solutions weaken the deck enough that we just have to live with it?

Question: Looking ahead, should Faithless Looting get banned, can this deck still exist? Has anyone considered or tested alternatives?

Note: I do not believe a ban is necessary, but a lot of talking heads seem to be pushing this. Notably, ones who have some other pet deck...

I have played with Steam Kin in mono red and it is absolutely bonkers with Bedlam Reveler. I took a week off from playing the deck, but went 4-0 and 3-1 the previous two weeks. My one loss saw me churn through more than half the deck without really seeing anything in game three. Shrugs

I am torn because I love the speed and explosiveness of mono red, but the consistency of Izzet is very tempting. Has anyone played both and willing to share thoughts?
