I would like to know which would be the best finisher for the UWB Control list, because milling the enemy out every game seems a bit unrealistic to me. I was thinking about Drogskol Reaver. Do you have any other ideas?
As you see, the manabase for Naya is almost there but most of the strong cards, like Thragtusk, Restoration Angel or Thundermaw Hellkite are quite expensive and I don't see any real substitutes here.
On the other hand, the manabase for a potential UB(w) Control list lacks a bit, but I think the appropriate gates could be a good substitute here, because control lists tend to be slower anyway.
I might note that the budget is only the beginning, I am willing to invest more over time when I see the deck can perform well. So cards like Snapcaster Mage which wont lose much value over time because they're played in other formats are okay, too.
I hope you get what I mean and can help me.
Thanks in advance.
Well I think you forgot to take out the Ethereal Armors and Pacifisms because you can't cast them.
As cheap auras go, Predator's Gambit or Deviant Glee pump quite effectively. Silver-Inlaid Dagger could be another option, especially put on the Stalkers or Harbor Bandits as they are humans.
I posted in this thread some weeks ago and done some testing (Soulsisters, RG Tron, Goblins and Storm) since then but I still can't really decide, so here we go again.
Favorite Playstyle (Aggro, Midrange, Control, Combo): No preference here except I don't like to be dependant on topdecks most of the time. I like to do "stuff", be it with myself or interacting with the opponent. So I guess tempo, control or combo should fit here, nonetheless Affinity, which seems a lot like "Tap creatures, win", should be okay if it's not in topdeck mode by turn 3. How Competitive (For Fun, Local Tournament, MTGO, PTQ/GP): Mostly for fun and upcomming FNMs next year. Favorite Cards/Colors: I like blue the most, but it's not mandatory to be in it Budget: ~150$ Staples Owned: None
My budget is quite low but I am willing to invest more when I feel it fits me. So a deck which is playable on this budget which can be upgraded to be more powerful is okay, too.
Edit: Something I forgot: I don't want to play a current flavor of the month, the deck should have perspective.
I want to start playing Modern casually with friends and in upcomming FNMs but I'm not sure which deck fits me.
My budget is ~150 euros and with the prices alone on the manabases I think Affinity or Tron would fit the best for me. I read the primers in both sections but I don't know which deck is better in an unknown environment.
I've been lurking the whole R/x Aggro forum for a while now and it drew my attention mostly because of zemanjaskis posts but also because RDW is just so much cheaper than all the other succesful decks.
Nonetheless is it true, if you don't even want to improve the deck you have because the budget is too high, why even bother posting in the competitive forum? It's all about winning in here and nothing else.
When you need help to find a substitute until you get card X and can't decide between the inferior cards Y and Z it's okay to ask, imho. Everything else seems just a bit foolish if you really want to play a competitive deck.
In my opinion Azorious brought some good tempo tools like Azorius Charm and Lyev Skyknight but yet a real tempo deck in the new RTR Standard has to be found finishing with good results.
I want to build a relatively cheap GW Aggro/Token Deck for some casual FNMs.
I'm not sure about the card choices, so im going to write my thoughts about every card that comes to my mind.
1CMC:
Avacyn's Pilgrim / Arbor Elf: The usual manadorks. I'm not sure to run a full playset of each because my curve is somehat low.
Doomed Traveler: Becomes a token after it died, not the worst turn one play and a nice chump blocker lategame.
Rancor: In my opinion gives the reach the deck requieres, 4 of.
Dryad Militant: More a sideboard card, could be a maindeck choice if I want to go the pure aggro route.
Intangible Virtue: Cheap pump for nearly every threat I want to play. Vigilance helps defend, too. Still not sure wheter to include them or not.
Precinct Captain: Good aggro creature that produces more creatures. At the prerelease he was performing very well.
Selesnya Charm: Token, pump and removal. Very versatile, 4 of.
3CMC:
Wayfaring Temple: Gets bigger, produces more tokens. Looks very well on paper but I don't have any experience with it. Cheap on the mana and budget wise!
Midnight Haunting: Instant flying token generator. Good for offensiv and defensive purposes.
Loxodon Smiter: Has nothing to do with tokens but is aggresively costed. Like the dryad, could be played for the aggro route.
Centaur Healer: Gives other aggro decks a hard time racing early in the game. Looks more of a SB choice to me.
4CMC:
I have a hole in the curve right here, didn't finde anything worth playing whic isn't budget. I know about Restoration Angel and try to get my hands on some, but for now I can't count on them.
5CMC:
Thragtusk: The beast. I own one and I'm definetely going to play it, whether in tokens, aggro or midrange.
Wolfir Silverheart: I currently have 2 of these bad boys and they seem really powerful when paired with an evasive/rancored creature.
Geist-Honored Monk: Brings creatures, grows with populate. Budget friendly!
So, that's what I think about each card (leaving out things like Rootborn Defenses which seem pretty situational).
There's a cool article called populated on a budget by Gavin Vehrny that has, in my opinion, a pretty solid g/w populate list as well as a few other budget lists. I know I probably spelt his name wrong, but the articles worth a read.
Could you link it please? Didn't find it in google.
I can't decide on a deck, especially between Naya or UB(w) Control. My budget is ~120-150.
Notable cards I already own:
4 Sunpetal Grove
4 Rootbound Crag
1 Sacred Foundry
1 Temple Garden
2 Drowned Catacomb
1 Merciless Eviction
1 Blind Obedience
As you see, the manabase for Naya is almost there but most of the strong cards, like Thragtusk, Restoration Angel or Thundermaw Hellkite are quite expensive and I don't see any real substitutes here.

this is my first post in the Modern forum.

Just my 2 cents.

Maybe someone could outline why that is the case.

4 Intangible Virtue
4 Midnight Haunting
4 Rancor
4 Selesnya Charm
1 Grove of the Guardian
7 Plains
4 Sunpetal Grove
4 Temple Garden
The Temple Gardens aren't really fit for a budget but I think they're worth the investement.
Your thoughts on the deck/cards?
