Finally, some Eldrazi stuff in this. I knew they wouldn't be in the set, as much as I wanted them too, but just acknowledging that they existed on Zendikar is good enough for me.

You know it was one of the photos teased on zendikar

No, I did not know that. I will say this set seems to be ignoring that an apocalyptic event happened on the plane not that long ago, probably less than a few years in story time, but maybe they discussed that in some article as to why we are spending so much time in the sky this time.

Guess depends on how you connected you want it, but from lore a lot of the conflict is based on the eldrazi aftermath. Nahiri's whole goal is to stop the roil as is it a reminder of the eldrazi influnce on the plane and her failure to protect the plane by getting the for artifact(s) in the ruins. The sky ruins only activated since the only one left in the air (Emeria, the Sky Ruin) had been guarded by angels who left to deal with the eldrazi and explorers activates them.

They also mention Drana and the vampires struggling as Drana is the only blood chief (the only kinda of zendikar vampire that can make more vampires) left after the eldrazi whipped them out and is struggling to figure out how her people will survive.

Not a lot happened, but it was a nice introduction to two characters we are going to see for a large part of the Zendikar Rising arc, so it's good. I liked it.

The short flashbacks to the battle at seagate highlight for me the fact that Magic story telling at its core works best as vignettes, rather than continous storylines following the same five planeswalkers. The descriptions of Zareth's and Akiri's experiences at seagate had more atmosphere and feeling than any of Gideon's "I whip my hair back and forth" and Nissa's "Zendikar is crying!" segments, like by a magnitude. The multiverse is a setting of countless worlds, and as a result of countless stories. They need to be told from the perspective of its countless peoples, not someone who's just passing through.

For the same reason my absolute favourite story (installment) from Amonkhet was the one with the multiple vignettes showing how the Amonkheti survive (or not survive) the onslaught of the eternals. That is where magic storytelling shines the most. The other chapters focusing on the gatewatch were largely not memorable.

Too bad these two characters are all gonna die...

Don't be too sure about this. We haven't seen Akiri die on-screen. And she is a master line-slinger.

Moreover, not everything from the trailers really happened in the story, right?

For example, garruk never went on his hungry rampage on Eldraine, and the Gingerbread Man still lives. Possibly.

    They have said the trailers lean to non-canon as they want it to show off the themes and feel of the set, with all the trailers having different degrees of matching what happens;

War of the Spark is looser but all the events happen in some way.

    Eldraine is totally non-canon.

Theros BD Trailer is hard to tell since we don't have any prose but you can see it as a nightmare Ashiok is giving Elspeth.

Ikoria is iffy since it could have happened off screen but nothing backs up it did.

My guess is similar event will happen in Zendikar but might 1 for 1, (heck the first story could be seen as a version of the trailer with Nissa and the elemental swapped in).

As for Akiri unless we "see" a body I'm not convinced anyone is dead in mtg.

This is just a bit too much. This effect should be 2-3 mana normally and I get tacking on an extra mana on cost reduction effect but you'd need 2 or 3 creature just to get it down to what it should be. Should be 3W, worst than typical removal like this normally, fair if you have a party creature, getting a discount with 2-3 party creatures.

Ya those are Nulls, Zendikar zombies. They are formed when a non-blood chief zendikar vampires tries to sire one.

What's going on with the horns of the minotaurs in Zendikar all of a sudden.

Looks like they getting a style update, like the goblins did in scars. With minotaurs being more popular make sense they would wanna feature them more. Looking back there are 4 other minotaurs in the past two zenikdar blocks so they not have put as much thought into them until this round.

You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain. Calling it now, Nahiri becomes the big-bad for the next major story arc.

A few people have noted it seems like we might have an anti-gatewatch forming from the last few sets:
    Nahiri from this set
    Lukka from Ixalan
    Ashiok and/or Calix from Theros
    Oko from Eldraine

Well we are support to get the rest of the MDFC lands cards right? Makes sense at least one other set would have them...

Question is can they just do the sheet for the four lands or will be a mechanic feature of the set?

This kinda remind of bestow where they got a afraid and costed everything one or two mana more than needed. That said some effects aren't too pricey and I would run them in a lands deck that is already ramping above curve so not much of an issue. Maybe they are planning/excepting on having decks ramping up faster this season.

This mechanic is not for me and every single newly revealed party card inspires me to save my money

I'm not typically one to check out on a set mid-preview, but this set is really losing me. I wonder if it's just their preview strategy skewing perceptions? It does seem like they're giving out little cohorts of meh Limited cards without much impressive stuff to balance it out. Maybe they aren't, but it sure feels like all we're seeing is unimpressive chaff.

I will say that the flavor is great, and the mechanics aren't on their face bad. Kicker, landfall, and party are all good mechanics, they just aren't inherently flashy (all three are mechanics that don't "do anything" on their own and rely on how individual cards use them to make a mark) and they're just being applied to unimpressive cards. I've said it elsewhere, but the set feels very "just fine" so far. Some useful cards, some with flexible utility, etc. Even the planeswalkers aren't very flashy.

I'm not going to argue the set is bad (we haven't even seen it yet), but preview season has been unimpressive and, dare I say it, boring. And that's coming from someone with a soft spot for maligned or underpowered sets/blocks. I like the last Zendikar block. I like the Masques block. They tried things and they certainly failed more than succeeded, but I see a lot of interesting elements in them. Here I just feel meh. I'm hoping some cards start getting previewed that make me want to do anything with this set.

To me I feel a bit like how I felt about Eldraine towards this set: there is a number of things I want for some decks, but don't think I gonna be building new decks or reshaping a deck for this set. Granted I always felt kinda this way with Zendikar so I haven't really been disappointed.

Similar to Eldraine too I wonder if a lot of this set is set up/seeding for some stuff in future set and will get a boost once more sets come out, such as how Eldraine was great improved by Theros. I could see upcoming sets having more of the party creature for example .

This is a really fun design for red I love how it works in the lands/lands in graveyard, impulse draw and graveyard recursion all at once.

So first, Zendikar gets stripped by the Eldrazi, and now they want to take away Zendikar's Roil? Zendikar is going downhill fast. Also, I thought the Roil, albeit a horrible storm, also caused creation and changed things for the better? Like grew jungles and what not where there was wastelands? It sounds like I have to side with Nissa on this one. Nahiri just sucks, let's face it. She lured Emrakul to Innistrad! Now she wants to destroy Zendikar's storms? She is essentially a hotheaded, vengeful multiplanar terrorist.

The Roil was/is a "immune" reaction to the eldrazi, it was't a feature of the plane when Nahiri was around and she seeks to restore Zendikar back to how it was when she was around. She sees it as part of the eldrazis damage on the plane and wants to fix it.

Yay Zendikons! The best way to awaken lands.

Storywise Nahiri is trying to stop the roil while Nissa is trying to stop her. Nissa asked Jace for help but then got impatient when Jace starting going on about how he might have read about the artifact Nahiri is looking for and it seems like he might have his own plans for it.

The race thing makes sense, Nahiri is a old walker who doesn't like to be looked down on and likely embarrassed/upset that a "child" saved her.
