Shame they couldn't do anything with the "Blood Magic" he was showing in story. Pay life and Sac a creature to gain control of one, or something like that.
That only works on Liliana, because of their contract. Doesn't seem like something he can just do willy nilly.

He's also responsible for literally turning the entire Luxa River into blood. Like, Blood Magic is clearly a thing of his. Maybe he can't do it willy nilly, but nothing in story seems to suggest he tutors you.

The purpose of his spell was to awaken the 3 dormant gods. That's story equivalent for tutoring

Is no one going to comment on the fact that Rhonas's "last stand" involves him chucking his head to become a token?

I mean, if you only look at the art it does appear that way. If you follow the story that Wizards posts though, you will see that's not what happens at all.

Aside from that, back on topic of the card's strength...Tarmogoyf requires you to have 4 card types in graveyards to have a higher toughness. There needs to be 6 card types in graveyards to have higher power. Why are we complaining about this card?

Anyone else kinda feel like this is lackluster?

For crying out loud. It’s a 2 mana spell that makes a 5/4 creature. What is lackluster about that?

If you get this on Turn 2, it's great. Any later turns and it begins to diminish in value.

How does this diminish in value any more than any other creature spell that doesn’t have a ridiculous ETB effect? After turn two this card’s downside becomes less and less relevant. Thus, it improves as the game extends as well as any other big dumb creature. ITS 2 MANA...
    Needs moar Hexproof.

This kind of mentality disappoints me to no end. This is how we end up with junk like Emrakul…

Seriously? This Doom Blade argument again? Fatal Push is an amazing card – that doesn’t detract from the efficiency of this card. If you look at this as the worst case scenario – I play Rhonas’s Last Stand on turn 2 while you have 1 mana open. You Fatal Push my snake. I don’t untap turn 3…

You still had to have Push in your hand – had to have the mana open – and you only paid 1 less mana. It’s the same thing if if I pay 4 mana for a creature and you Push it with Revolt…So we are just never supposed to play a ~4 mana creature without an ETB again? Again, this is how we end up with Emrakul…
This card is good – it’s downside is that 2 lands don’t untap on the next turn. Green is THE best color to handle this cycle of downside and this has been the cheapest downside so far. As the game goes on, the downside becomes less and less relevant but a 5/4 creature stays relevant…

Now that is one unplayable Demon, with horrible flavor text to boot.

maybe in the lameness that is standard...but anywhere that reanimation effects exist this demon is wonderful

Pay life + Sac a creature to get anything you want is some pretty powerful blood magic...

I've got a Black/Green Commander deck that is all about creating swarms of insects. This would be literally the perfect card for the deck if it was in those colors.

I like this card, but it doesn't feel like it should be UR. The ability certainly is - but the creature design, the swarm thing, and the fact that they're insects seems so GB...oh well.

I also think its telling that Wizards hasn't spoiled anything officially yet today and this was supposed to be the big day. Internally they are furious and rightly so. This was supposed to be the slow rollout of the upcoming set, not doing damage control on a leak that they have said time and time again that they are trying to crack down on. There are some REAL problems internally at Wizards/Hasbro right now. I hope they can fix them. Smile

They have officially revealed 4 cards today....

I just think it's lame because it diminishes the number of weeks in 2017 that I get to be excited to open up the various sites to look for new cube cards.

How? How does it diminish the number of weeks? Wait and check back when you're good and ready. This isn't a blockbuster movie reveal, its not the Walking Dead being talked about on Facebook or some other highly public forum. It is tucked away in multiple pages of a sub-thread of a very specific forum. It's beyond easy to avoid this. Take some responsibility on how you consume the information.

On the the topic of the story significance of Gideon's Defeat: Note how Bolas is touching Gideon and the flavour text is referencing him thinking himself untouchable. If memory serves, Bolas's signature ability ever since he was first printed is wiping clean people's memories with but a touch. Gideon may be invulnerable to any bodily harm but Bolas's touch can leave him with complete amnesia. It could even lead to him joining Bolas after some moral rewiring, although I hope that is not the case.

I think it has more of a resemblance to the part in the story where Bolas pokes a claw through the Hekma with no resistance. He is essentially doing the same thing to Gideon's spell

Let's go ahead and step away from ixalan leaks for now

The mothership is just starting to land with the first previews of hournf devastation.

Begone HoD! Something far more interesting is on the horizon!!

Bolas does things to Gatewatch - Gatewatch gets away for some silly reason. Yay.

Okay, now let's talk about Pirates v. Dinosaurs and Dinosaurs Avatars!

I was so looking forward to a rich, culturally-inspired Mesoamerican set in the vein of Amonkhet, Theros, or Kamigawa. But an Aztec/dinosaur/pirate world staring a gorgon? What the ****? Why all at once? Isn't there enough material there for several settings?

Slow down, Wizards, this is kind of absurd.
No, hush you, this is amazing. This Axe Cop level of ridiculousness is a refreshing change of pace.

    Quote from Ryperior74 »
    One thing I'm wondering though

From the Jace just being legendary thing

Do you think this means planeswalkers include ones from the past can be the commanders now in commander?
Commanders still have to be legendary creatures. Planeswalker commanders would require a change of EDH deck construction rules.

    Quoting for truth here!

I don't understand why people are against something that is inspired by a culture and instead want something that is a carbon copy of it in card form...

Think of what Tarkir would be like without the dragon aspect to it. Perhaps still insteresting - but not nearly as fantastic and probably far less popular in general.

Now that I see some folks complaining about this set and it's creativity, I understand how I came off when complaining about them ruining Innistrad.

Lol this set looks amazing. Can't wait to ramp so hard into dinosaurs that I use to defend my way of life from raiding pirates. Awe...some..!

This feels like ARK the card game

I AM SO EXCITED! This was fantastic news - I've tried so many times to make a dinosaur deck and they're always terrible. That's okay though because I like the flavor but my friends always crack the joke that I don't have any dinosaurs in my dinosaur deck which kills it! This is fantastic news!
You have a dinosaur deck too? Dino bros high five! Hi-Five

We have been keeping the dream alive!

    Quote from Saandro »
They have no idea what they are doing anymore. Aztec themed set could work very well on it's own. But now we add dinosaurs, and pirate gorgons. There is even a mecha cat which looks like its from Kaladesh? It looks to me like they are trying too hard to be random and quirky, and failing at it.

The land that was mesoamerica covers a large area and has been a hotspot for fossil discoveries. If you fold the timelines of history over themselves then this inspiration makes sense. Also, the art style of the mesoamerican people fits well for a type of people that would live in/around/potentially domesticate dinosaurs if the timelines could ever collide (in an alternate reality of fantasty there is no reason it couldn't).

They've already said in the past that they're worried about the amount of design space that dinosaurs have which has kept them from digging into a plane dedicated to only dinosaurs. This way, we get the chance to experiment and see if it's worth exploring further with their own plane.

This is goofy, off the wall, exciting, creative, and the art looks inspired. From what I gather from your posts, I would hate a plane designed from your perspective. It would seem eternally dull. I don't need to retrace history with these sets. This is a fantasy game that suits this kind of set perfectly.
