Charge Through makes my hidden Zada, Hedrong Grinder commander deck happy. Always willing to have those cards.

The set's mythics aren't game breaking staples. This is a good thing. Why are you folks always upset at the rare situation that the lowest supply cards aren't the most powerful?

This is good for the game.

Research Body? I hope the library consented.

Is anyone else getting the feeling that with maybe the exception of the Elder Dragons, these mythics don't have much going for them? I mean, this one does feel pretty mythic... Maybe people will rejoice because these are "classic" mythics and not "I NEED 4 FOR MY STANDARD TOURNAMENT DECK!!!"

I’m one of the people rejoicing! This is exactly what I think a mythic should be.

I feel like this is one time the "hotness" of a character is truly flavorfully intentional, since she fits the role of the "mysterious and seductive substitute teacher who shows up out of no where and turns out to be a witch/necromancer/alien/giant mantis, etc." This is a school plane, after all - certain high school tropes outside of wizarding worlds ought to show up.

Solid Buffy reference there - I was glad to see it lol.

    So...I'm in love.

This is the COOLEST way to utilize one of the primary planeswalkers without it feeling stale! What an awesome way to bring her back into the story and integrate her to this new plane. So awesome!

Kind of interesting that they briefly slipped in the fact that the 5 houses were established by "Elder Dragons". They sound like plausible legendary face cards for the on-theme Commander Decks for this set, and probably with some "professors" or unique legendary creatures as the other secondary Commanders for the decks.

In addition to this, they also mentioned 81 new cards for the Commander decks! Holy cow. I would guess we probably have approximately 15 new cards per deck, and 6 cards (Probably artifacts and lands) that fit into each deck. I imagine this includes cards from the actual Strixhaven set: these decks feel pretty similar to the Ikoira decks.

I don't think they'd make a cycle of elder dragon founders for the commander decks, they'd go in the main set for sure. A) because they want to differentiate the commander decks more than that, and B) because non commander players would be disappointed. It'd be like making Ikoria's Apex monsters the C20 commanders.

On the other hand they talked about how linking the commander decks to the main set can do some fun ideas such as having Jirina Kudro as the face of the deck and not in the set despite her arguably being the main heroic character in Ikoria.

Also thinking on how people were upset that many of the Elder Dragons in Tarkir where not all made to be commanders coughDragonlord Kolaghancough

dude kolaghan is the only bad one when I comes to commander’s but she’s slowing becoming more useful from those relentless rats and Persistent Petitioners decks in edh and more any number will pop out eventually

And of course my Shadowborn Apostle deck

I believe that makes this the first standard expansion set since Tempest (Rath) to take place on a new plane without being named after the plane itself.

Are you referring to just recent times, like since they went to the one block Standard?

Because Dragon's Maze and Gatecrash don't refer to the plane.

Or, are you just counting the first block of a set?
This should be about Guildpact and Dissension. :p

Great point! Thanks for the correction lol.

Werewolves, despite being in multiple sets, still need a ton of help to be any sort of legitimate competitors. I am hoping they finally break away from the "werewolves are the limited tribe" thing that has plagued them in the past. More control over the flip would be amazing.

Otherwise, I've recently wanted them to transform at upkeep instead of requiring a lack of spell casting.
Something like, "During your upkeep, human werewolves transform. At your end step, werewolves transform." That allows me to take advantage of their werewolf side while still having them be inefficient human creatures during my opponents' turns.

Flavorfully, my turn begins, "full moon" and they transform and attack as ravenous beasts. At the end step, combat bloodlust wears off, the sun rises and they become humans again.

It won't happen, but it would be cool. So I'll just cross my fingers for better control over the transformation.

I don't understand why a certain volume of creatures are needed. Perhaps he just means in the modern style of game design they have chosen to pursue. Because, and someone please correct me if I am wrong, it feels as though creatures are just so much more plentiful in each new set than they ever used to be. If I am wrong about that, maybe it just feels that way because of the way they have moved so many effects, keywords, and abilities onto the creatures. Effects which spells used to be the primary source.

I guess that's what I am saying. I don't mind having the same literal number of creatures, but I want them to be more watered down. Give them a keyword here or there; just let the spells be the power houses for this set. There are already plenty of strong creatures to carry Standard from the other sets.

Honestly, if that doesn't end up being the case and this just turns into a Wizard tribal set I think I will sit it out like I had been doing since Dominaria up until Kaldheim.

A lot of folks acting like Harry Potter was some ground-breaking original concept. Very few of the concepts themselves were unique although Rowling clearly found a new way to captivate children with the tropes.

I don't expect Strixhaven to be anything brand new conceptually either, which is going to lead to people claiming it a Harry Potter knockoff without even being aware of all of the other similar products and stories that inspired it.

I genuinely hope Strixhaven brings back an emphasis on spell casting and has creatures take a back seat from the spotlight for a bit. I feel that is what this game needs the most.

People need to realize that they intend to keep doing this. Their goal is to keep printing cards they can ban.

Banning cards isn't really in WotC's interest. Big money cards like Oko and Uro have lost value as a result of being banned.
It's more that it is in WotC's interest to push the envelope with big money cards like Oko and Uro to make sure they are highly sought after, and as a result, a number of such cards have been over the top. If you're deliberately aiming for top of the pack, sometimes they fall under and are more mediocre, sometimes they go over.
I'd say it's a case of WotC taking too many risks with these cards without enough playtesting to make sure they're in line.
Plus, WotC works on a delay between finalising the set and printing, so banning have flow-on effects of throwing off the balancing of the metagame that future sets were developed around. So banning can end up chaining like that.

I must vehemently disagree with you. It's not oversight to continue doing this kind of thing. It's a model and it's not an uncommon model in mobile gaming or free to play gaming. They've determined that they have sold enough of the product - the remaining profit exists on the secondary market where they are only indirect beneficiaries.

The decision makes perfect sense. They've made their money off Uro - time to make room for the next pushed crap to gouge.
