Minor corrections: You turned into stone when you looked at medusa, not when medusa looked at you. Also Hercules might have done twelve tasks, this wasn't one of them. It's Perseus who was send to get the head of the medusa, the ugliest and most powerful of the three gorgons, to save his mother Danaë from being married of to some creep (the ruler of wherever they lived, can't remember). For this he used Hermes' winged sandals and Athena's mirrored shield. He succeeded ofcourse, and since then Athena has kept the head of medusa in the centre of her personal shield. O, and the medusa came into existence after she, once a princess or something famed for her beautiful hair, challenged Athena, who changed her hair into snakes and turned her into a Gorgon, though she remained mortal...

Sorry for this post because it is off topic,but i must point out you missed one of the coolest parts of the story. After he had gotten Medusa's head and had gone back to his house, there were people having a party for his mother and the creep she was going to get married to, when he arrived he threatened the man. The man told his warriors at the party to attack him, then Perseus told his mother to shield her eyes, and upon her doing so, pulled out Medusa's head and turned everyone at the party to stone.
