Play the new version of the deck against the old version a few times, no free mulligans, then come back and say again that 16 lands never gives you problems. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just trying to illustrate an important point.

Also, Cenn's Tactician only allows a creature to block 1 additional creature, not all creatures.

Mmmm, I never have problems with that mana, I tend to never have to mulligan and have enough mana to do what I need to do. I still stand strongly with 16 - 18 mana depending what the build is, I have never seen no reason to have over 18 mana, especially for 1 color tribe decks.

And yeah, I totally forgot about it being one additional creature, still a great combo though, if both Loyal Sentry's are out, and you can kill a couple creatures with just a 1/1, pretty nice touch still.

    Thanks, I'll edit that in a wee-bit!

  • posted a message on Building on a Budget: Elemental Shaman

So I use to use a red Elemental deck and noticed the Rage Forger so I thought it'd be fun to throw together a budget Elemental Shaman deck.

With Incandescent Soulstoke plus Rage Forger every creature you play will strengthen from these cards, and with Rage Forger's second ability, every attack you make you'll be doing extra direct damage straight to the opponent.

Only creature that doesn't get the +1/+1 counters that's really strong and worth having at least 2 of them is Nova Chaser great card for it's cost and no matter what, unless they prevent the damage or remove him, it's for sure you'll get some decent damage in.

Shared Animosity just fits this deck so nicely in my opinion and all your creatures will get an advantage with it one way or the other. And you can also throw in some Reckless Charge's to your Nova Chaser or your creatures if they just came into play.

I was going to take out Lightning Bolt completely and just have Red Sun's Zenith but I love having that 1 drop 3 damage to destroy either a creature or throw at the player if needed, especially if you just need it as a finisher. And then the Zenith is great for using later on when you can use all your mana to throw at your player unless they have that tough creature you need to get rid of, plus it goes back to your library for later use!

Flamekin Harbinger is quite possibly the best 1 drop Elemental as you can search for your Incandescent Soulstoke, Nova Chaser, or your Rage Forge immediately and get them into your hand to plan your attack!

Soulbright Flamekin isn't the best card, you're most likely not going to get his effect done but the trample is very nice imo with Elementals, throwing it on your strong creatures or on a creature with Reckless Charge. Manaforge Cinder is mainly just for the 1 drop Elemental Shaman. You could always drop a couple of him or a couple Soulbright Flamekin for 2 more Sunflare Shaman. He's an amazing burn card if you start getting a graveyard filled of elemental's. He can always be a great finisher for the deck.

If you're wanting to go a little higher on budget, you can always throw in Stigma Lasher, he's about 1.13 a piece, but I feel he's not AMAZING, and for the price difference and budget wise, I'd prefer using Sunflare Shaman's.

I think this deck is a fun idea, never seen one specifically themed at Elemental Shaman so I thought I'd give it a try.

Any comments or ideas to throw in for others, please feel free to reply or shoot me a message.

I built this deck for about $10.72, for that price and the deck itself I feel like it would hold up well against a lot of decks. Elementals is a very strong tribe.

    Good luck and have fun!

I notice a LOT of threads where people are building tribal decks, which are my personal favorite but also want to build on a budget, and people are posting the most expensive cards possible.

So I put into consideration of throwing my 'custom' budget building decks as I go through them, and I thought I'd start off one that a lot of people ask about, the exciting weenie white soldiers.

The total came out to be about $10.73, now that's budget and for the look of the deck, I think it's quite worth the money, but of course, if you want to go a little higher, you could always switch some things out yourself.

Down to the dirty bits of the deck. In my honest opinion, a lot of people think Gideon's Avenger and Gideon's Lawkeeper are great cards to have in but I feel like it's too slow of a combo, and on top of that, I prefer having removal over Lawkeeper and Veteran of the Depths instead of Avenger, as I feel if you're gonna go aggro, you keep attacking with Depths and he gets stronger each time you do, the Avenger is for when their creatures tap.

Cenn's Tactician and Loyal Sentry is an amazing combo for cheap. I consider it 'removal' because all you need is ONE +1/+1 counter on the Sentry and you'll be able to block 2 creatures and kill them with just a 1/1. Great combo with 2 Sentry's out, makes it harder for your opponents to attack.

Kithkin Zephyrnaut is by far the best and most underrated soldier creature in the game. In a soldier deck, he is pretty much a +4/+4 with flying and vigilance for 3 mana. How can you pass that up? Plus any added bonuses from your 'lords'.

About the choice of the lords, Captain of the Watch is way too expensive imo both budget wise and mana wise, so I always skip out on him, Mobilization is Captain of the Watch for cheaper, plus you can get tokens as much as you need to. As for the Field Marshal, he's expensive so I throw in at least one, as he is the best lord.

The best 1 mana soldier in the game is for sure Icatian Javelineers, cost 1, and can easily remove first couple turns of the game creatures and still be on the board to attack later and make room for your other creatures to pass through. As well as Elite Javelineer who is great for defense to block as well as deal damage to your opponents creatures, and if you have a couple on the field, you can easily kill some extra creatures by just blocking like you normally would do.

Catapult Master is a great removal card, especially thrown in with To Arms!, then you can do it multiple times or attack as well. With soldiers costing so little it's easy to do his effect and can be great for removing those creatures that are a little too strong for your soldiers. Another great control card that no one seems to talk about is Loxodon Gatekeeper, he's great to get your opponents creatures down tapped so you have better chances of getting through.

Ballyrush Banneret is a no brainer, but I disagree with having none in, and I disagree with having 4 in, 2 should be enough with the amount of high costing cards that are in the deck. Another no brainer is Elite Vanguard, definite 4 as he is a 1 drop for 2/1 which is great for some bashing.

The support cards imo are great. I can't pass on the equipment since you're going to be playing soldiers left and right, and when attacking getting those extra soldiers with Militia's Pride for only 1 mana. Brave the Elements is great for some protection for your creatures as well as some unblocked moments. Then you have Silence which is a card not many people talk about either. Play that on an Elf deck at the start of their turn, and instead of them getting out several creatures, they're getting out none...it's a great control card so you can get ahead of the game before your opponents do.

The main thing I want to get across is mana, I feel like people assume they're playing decks where they are constantly getting their mana destroyed, but I don't think it's necessary. I use in weenie decks a max of 16, with no problems ever. 16 plains is plenty enough as it's all mainly low cards plus the Ballyrush Banneret gets your cards to cost less. And the Forbidding Watchtower is great for defense when you need it, can not only have the chance of easily killing creatures if you have lord out, but the defense is great. If you have the time, throw the 1/5 out and use Tactician to get him to block them all.

That's about all for soldiers on my end, if you have any questions, comments or ideas to throw in, go right ahead.

Remember though, this is for more 'budget' based groups. I think 10+ bucks for a magic card is a joke, and that's why I make these types of decks.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy!

    Quote from Sid Wicked
You don't really need Doran to play Treefolk properly. My build is mono green and it works just fine without him.

    Here's my build.

Beast Within is a much better removal spell than Lignify will ever hope to be. The 3/3 beast token is negligible since most of your guys are bigger anyways. Plus, it really is never a dead card no matter what you play against.

Hmmmm, tap 3 mana to get rid of a card so your opponent has a 3/3 Beast that can do damage to you....or be easily strengthened and be a threat against your treefolks, or tap 2 and give them a creature that can't do **** but defend, yet the 4 defense would still barely ever be enough since the treefolks are strong or get stronger.

Beast Within is the most overrated card I have ever seen. I don't understand why people think so highly of it.

Mono green beast is really weak without Contested Cliffs.

How? Lol. Beasts are hella strong and they have great ones for cheap.

On top of that, any spells and creatures that have mana ramp and you'll get out beasts quickly, plus, I wouldn't be worried that much about removal spells because with the mana ramp, you're only gonna take a little bit of damage by the time you start getting out all your strong creatures.

Also, if using Mono-Green, just buy a Primal Rage, maybe throw in a Quest for Renewal or Beastmaster Ascension. Using the mana ramp while Quest for Renewal is out is going to get it enough counters by the point you have your beasts out, then you pretty much have vigilance. I also think you should up the Overwhelming Stampede, amazing card and with beasts having great power already, it's a great finisher.

I feel like there's so many good beasts being missed as I look through mtg gatherer. With mana ramp, the amount of mana is so uneeded, I myself would end up having 18 mana, Birds of Paradise, Utopia Sprawl etc.

Looking through this I love the idea because I found out all the Kor's are soldiers, meaning one Equipment....Veteran's Armaments baby!!!!!!!

Maybe throw in a couple Honor of the Pure's. I'd also suggest maybe Serra's Blessing if you want to attack and still have blockers. Silence and Mana Tithe are really good cards to have but then again, you want to base it around equipments, so maybe throw in 1 Honor of the Pure and either 2 Silence or 2 Mana Tithe. Definitely prefer Silence, as Mana Tithe stops one card per copy but Silence can stop them from casting many spells, great against an elf deck.

I'm gonna have to make me one of these Smile

You guys need to pay attention to what the op says. He said he's kind of on a budget, and a lot of you are telling him to take out cards to get ones that are REALLY expensive or ridiculously overpriced.

    HE'S ON A BUDGET

Honestly, I liked the G/W Knight deck before, but then I changed mine to W Flanking, and it's amazing................

From what I find, and the deck I made, it would be just as good as the event deck for like 20 bucks max. I honestly don't see why you guys are posting cards that are 3 bucks+ when he is talking about a budget and on top of that mentioning LOTS of cards that have NOTHING to do with Illusions.

    Heres an Idea yo.

What about making this a real green blue deck without the total reliance on the temple?

If we go to the duels of the planeswalkers 2012 we have the character Kiora Atua.
    Check it out.

She works on heavy ramping and popping out seabeasties.
If you take her deck and tailor it, it could be competitive proper plus a bag of chips.

Also, I think that cancel and draw card that profiteroles, desserts gambit or something to enhance Ula's temple.

Also you can get stuff like canopy cover and that other green shroud +2/2 instant vines thing.

Green Blue Sea beasties go! Form blazing sword!

    Here is my Mono:

I think his whole point to this deck is to use the Quest for fun and keep it around the Kraken's/Leviathan's and blue, that's the point of this deck.

How on earth is the Maverick better than the Student? The Student can be pumped up to a 3/3 First Strike on turn 2 and is still good even if you draw it on turn 8.

I never said he was better. But with the flanking deck, I see it as more of a weenie aggressive deck, attack attack attack, with your flankers. The Student of Warfare has to be leveled up and to me that doesn't fit the theme because it's 'slower' in a way. And the maverick is a quick one drop with vigilance, so if they don't have anything in the early game you can get some damage done plus leave him as a blocker.

As for equipment's, that's another thing I don't see you should do in the flanking deck, it's about attacking and getting out as much flankers as possible, because then their creatures become more and more useless and equipment's are way too slow. Gotta pay the mana cost, then pay the 'usually' high equip cost and it's just too slow. By that point you could have 2 extra flankers out instead.

    Just my opinion honestly.

As for the Concerted Effort with other Knights to rely on getting them all Flanking is a waste imo. If you're wanting a flanking deck, you shouldn't rely on Concerted Effort to get other knights flanking. You might as well just throw a knight deck together with the stronger knights and step away from flanking. And my 2 cents on Riftmark Knight I feel like he's good if you just play him, but to do 3 for suspend to wait for that extra creature when he comes out, you could have way more creatures out by that point by playing the others, so I see him as a 'slower' card.

Bloodbond March is a super interesting card.

Indeed this card is very interesting.

Black/Forest deck. Find a way to get a buttload of Relentless Rats into your graveyard within a couple turns, then you'll have enough mana by that if Bloodbond March is out (Possibly get a green card if any to search for an enchantment) and then play one Relentless Rats, then your whole graveyard comes into play and you have easily 10+/10+ Relentless Rats. Maybe throw in a Overwhelming Stampede and BOOM

Don't do Student of Warfare, if you want a good one drop, and seeing as it's a Knight Flanking deck, keeping it in a 'tribal' sense use Lionheart Maverick, he has vigilance so he's great for attacking and blocking, plus if you spike him up.

I think at least 1 - 2 Zhalfirin Commander is good as if you have extra mana, you can boost up a Knight or two while you're at it.

Also, I know you ended up taking out Celestial Crusader but if you want to give ALL your knights an easy boost and make them indestructible, plus they have flanking as it is, please please please put 4 Knight Exemplar. I mean, you're using all knights as it is.

And Pentarch Paladin, even though he is a bit expensive, I would throw in 4 of him, instead of having Leonin Skyhunter. If you're going for flanking, keep it around that theme, don't throw in too many non-flankers even if they are good. I'd say the only non-flankers you should have are Knight Exemplar, Lionheart Maverick, and of course some Accorder Paladin's, he's one of the best knights imo, for a 2drop, 3/1 who can make your other creatures stronger, especially since they have flanking, it's a good mix.

And last but not least, a really good card for the expensive guys or even the ones that cost any colored mana in t heir mana cost, Semblance Anvil.

EDIT: Another thing I need to get off my mind is mana. I don't know what people think when they think they need to have 24 mana. It's pointless. Even if you deal with a land removal deck, I have NEVER EVER in my years of magic used over 18 mana in a one colored deck. 20 in two-colored. In my elf/goblin decks I use 16 mana. Never have ever had an issue with mana. It's plenty of mana, and a chance for more good spells and creatures to use.

    Here's what I have made

Silence and Pacifism together imo are way better than using those white removal's that give them life or mana...why help them, there's just as good cards to use. This is my final version I have come up with. Get out at least one Knight Exemplar and as many Cavalry Master's as possible and you practically have an unstoppable deck. All the flanking adds will pretty much make their creatures useless plus on top of it you'll have your creatures protected with indestructible + Serra's Blessing so you have the ability to attack each turn and still block.

One of my favorite decks. Pretty cheap mana costs, and flanking is an amazing ability.

Was taking a look on here and noticed this thread.

I just made an Elemental Shaman deck, way better than a regular Elemental deck imo.

Every creature in it is an Elemental Shaman except I have 2 Nova Chaser's for it. The spells are a mix of burn, mana, and 4 Shared Animosity's Smile

It's pretty awesome, have the 2 lords for it, have Rakka Mar for some token action. And a good chunk of great Elemental Shaman's.

I would honestly pull out maybe 2 Ashling the Pilgrim because he is a legendary creature so you can only have one out at a time.
