So the huge amount of new Smash Bros. information we got yesterday deserves it's own thread. I was intrigued before, but now I'm legitimately excited. I'm talking about the bigger stuff here, but a breakdown of all the details is here: http://kotaku.com/everything-we-learned-about-smash-bros-today-1561057767
Super Smash Bros 3DS is releasing this summer
Super Smash Bros Wii U is releasing this winter
There are no more transforming characters. All the transforming characters have been split (with the exception of Pokemon trainer, as of right now all we have is Charizard), presumably to get it to run well on the 3DS (this is actually a good change). What this means is that they've all got a new Down+B special, and Zelda's is a Phantom that looks pretty cool.
No news about what the 'unique' feature of the Wii U version is, but in the 3DS version there is a mode called 'Smash Run', which puts all the players in a giant dungeon-like level with randomized enemies. Beating this enemies provides you with bomberman-esque power-ups, which are used after the time limit ends in you later battles. Sounds like an interesting change.
The other interesting addition are custom moves. They didn't release many details, but from the video it appears that you can modify your special moves. For instance, it appears you can make his fireballs fly straight instead of bouncing, or make the fireball huge but short ranged.
There are also apparently 'Boss Characters' you can fight on certain stages where, when beaten, give the last person to hit them some kind of benefit (like the Yellow Devil from Megaman exploding).
I'm getting excited for this. The 3DS version will be great to have, as very few of my friends have a Wii U.
I have to say though, I'm disappointed in Olimar's nerf. I'll have to see how it actually plays, but they cut the pikmin he can have at once down to three, although his recovery move is better. The recovery move is the opposite of how it was before - in Brawl the more Pikmin you have the better reach you have to get back. It seems in the new games that you've got better recovery the less Pikmin you have. Seems counter-intuitive for the character, but maybe you can ditch your Pikmin easier somehow this time.
One of the biggest things I took from the Direct was this:
There are now two modes of online play. "For Fun" has all stages, all items, and is 4-player FFA. "For Glory" is played 1v1, No Items, Final Destination (with every stage having a "Final Destination" mode so that you get a variance of locales).
It's nice that they're actively acknowledging the competitive community with this mode. I do feel like it's a little bit trollsy though, because FD is generally considered one of the least "neutral" of the neutral picks (it gives a large advantage to people who can projectile spam), whereas something like Battlefield would have been better. (Project M, for example, has something like a dozen stages with various configurations of platforms and little to no interference for more varied competitive play.)
It also echoes the common Melee statement "Fox Only, Final Destination, No Items", which was used by people decrying competitive play as being stale and repetive.
But yeah, I'm excited.
Edit: On further inspection, they never state whether the For Glory mode is Time or Stock. If it's not stock, that kind of defeats the purpose because no competitive mode has EVER used time as its metric. Here's hoping 1v1 Stock is an option.
Also, I'm excited for the rest of the character reveals.
Smash 1 had 12 Characters
Smash 2 had 26, 14 being new
Smash 3 had 37, with 5 cuts and 16 new characters (4 and 15 if you count Young Link and Toon Link as "close enough")
So far in Smash 4, we've seen 29 characters, 6 of which are new, and there are 2 nearly-confirmed cuts (Squirtle/Ivysaur). Assuming only zero to two other cuts (I've heard Ike and Lucario as the most suggested) and a total of 12-18 new characters, that would make a final roster with between 47 and 55 characters.
There's a number of popular rumors as to the other newcomers.
Two I'd love to see but am not holding my breath over are:
Mike Jones from Startropics
Trevor or Simon Belmont or Alucard from Castlevania
The latter would be really awesome. I had originally wished for a Trevor/Alucard transformation character, but with transformations being removed for Smash 4 that's impossible. Either way, with the recent Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate on the 3DS, these characters all got some recent screen time and some very portable movesets (including double jumping, tether recovery, blocking, grabbing, aerial attacks, etc).
I will get both versions anyway, but this gives me an argument to give to one of my friends about why you should own both. Especially the dungeon like challenge on the 3ds.

Casual crazy magic player, otaku maniac, unrully cosplayer, what did you expect me to be?
Wildfire, I agree with most of your points (especially final destination only). However, Lucario has already been confirmed in the new game. He even has a Mega Evolution (which I assume is his new final smash).
I think it would be weird to cut Fire Emblem characters the same time a super popular Fire Emblem game came out, but whatever.
They've also stated that the Roster isn't going to be bigger than Brawl, due to the constraints with the 3DS (and honestly, with characters running at 60fps, I'm impressed enough to be okay with it).
We've got 29 total characters right now. I can't see there being more than 7 more characters revealed. I imagine we can see most clones or similar characters getting cut, mostly because custom moves would largely eliminate the Ganondorf/Captain Falcon Divide. Jigglypuff, Ness and Captain Falcon are the only remaining original characters unconfirmed for the new game of the original 12. Since no one new has their fighting style, I think we'll see them again. That brings us to 32 characters. Wario and Metaknight seem like they'd be back, and I imagine we've got one or two surprises on the way before the summer (as Sonic was such a closely guarded secret), but I doubt we'll be seeing many more than that. I expect we'll see at least one Namco character, probably Pac-man or a Tales of/Tekken Character.
I already own a 3DS for other things (notably I got it for Link Between Worlds), so it will be a definite pickup for that.
As far as the Wii-U version goes, I don't own one and I don't see much of a compelling reason to get one. There's currently only three games I'd be interested in (New Super Mario Bros/Luigi Wii-U, Super Mario 3D World, DK Country Tropical Freeze), and none of those are enough of a selling point to shell out $300 for the system.

They've said that not everyone is coming back, but I'm pretty sure the roster will be larger than Brawl's. Cutting someone for EVERY new addition would massively enrage the fanbase. Only having 7ish new additions would also be pretty bad for the franchise. There's a few fairly credible rumors out there suggesting a roster size of 48 with 12 newcomers and 4 cuts (including Ivy/Squirtle)
I derped on Lucario already being confirmed, but Ike does seem like a likely cut if they bring in a new FE character, much like Roy left for Ike in Melee->Brawl.
Not that I wouldn't LOVE 48 characters, but I could have sworn one of the earlier Nintendo Directs mentioned there weren't going to be more characters than Brawl.
Wildfire, you will want a Wii U when they will get some other good titles out. Next Zelda game should be more closer to the very first one (one of the Nintendo Direct about the Wii U did mention that they wanted to toss asside the linear feel of recent titles of the Zelda serie). Also, Wind Waker HD is a good revisit. There seems to be some more interesting games comming up, like Mario Kart 8 ( http://ca.ign.com/games/upcoming/wii-u this is a list put together by IGN). Still, I expect that both SB games will be good.

I feel the need to point out that it was never said that For Glory mode is strictly 1v1 matches, only that it would be possible to do it. The gameplay video playing during the explanation is a four player match, even!
The misconception about this is everywhere, though.

I haven't been super fond of most of the 3D Zeldas. My favorites in the series are Link to the Past, Link Between Worlds, Oracle of Seasons/Ages, Link's Awakening, and the original. Still, if they're willing to bring LBW tech to a 3D Zelda I might pick it up. I'd want the price of the system to come down before I did though.

This is true, but the 1v1 is the thing I actually care about. Here's hoping they make Stock an option rather than sticking just to Time.

I can't find any information that confirms that. The only thing I can find is an interview with Sakurai where he regretfully says that they won't be able to bring every Brawl character back.
4 cuts and 12 additions keeps it about in line with the growth from each generation.

I'm curious whether Nintendo is intentionally trying to bury the WiiU, or just doing it out of sheer incompetance. Releasing on the 3DS several months before the WiiU is going to dramatically reduce their sales on the WiiU. For one of the (very) few games that could be a system seller.
I have 3Ds and WiiU. I'll probably buy it for the 3DS, and then not even look at the WiiU version. If it were simultaneous, I'd buy it on the WiiU because I like ploaying on a big TV. but, by the time it comes out on the WiiU I'll be done. At least done enough that I don't feel like spending *another* $50 on the same game.

I think that's the way most people will be playing it. Of the maybe 12 people I know IRL that I game with, only three (including me) have the Wii U. I actually got a text from a buddy earlier today saying the exact same thing about it you did.
I don't know. There's a pretty big difference between playing it on the handheld and playing it on the big screen.
-I don't know that many other people with 3DS's
-The 3DS doesn't have the full range of buttons that the Wii-U Pro Controller does (no double triggers, no second Analog Stick), making it worse for serious play. (I know they make an extension with a Z and a second stick, but it isn't compatible with the 2DS which is what I have and it's still more awkward than the real controller)
-Tournaments after the Wii-U version releases will almost certainly be on the Wii-U version
-The Wii-U version is a much better party game because people who aren't playing can spectate and it's much easier to trade off controllers rather than handing your gameboy around to other people.
I mean, I *probably* won't buy a Wii-U just for this game, but if they can back it up with like, a new Zelda game along the lines of Link Between Worlds, a new Metroid game, a new Pikmin, a new Mother, etc (or even just pick two of the above) it'd certainly give me incentive.

Eh, to each his own. I like the idea of a 3DS version that my friends without Wii U can play and learn the game. The switch between controller won't be drastic, since the game literally uses only a handful of buttons (grabs might be awkward, for instance). But I don't think it will be any more awkward than the Wii controls were (ugh). My biggest problem on the Wii U will be affording enough Pro Controllers for everyone, now that we can't just reuse Wavebirds again. With the 3DS, I imagine the controls will largely be the same, with grabbing the only awkward transition:
Attack - A
Special - B
Jump - X/Y/Up
Shield - R
Grab - L
Unlike a common Shoryuken-style fight game, very little of the muscle memory for the game lies in the shape of the controller. Plus, I'm not sure if you have played Jump All-Stars on the DS, but it was a pretty fantastic display of how well these kinds of games can work on the 3DS.
I guess the only real problem is the faux-control stick on the 3DS, but I don't really foresee that being much of an issue, honestly.
The Wii U, like the Wii, is sure to become a household brand in about two or three years, once everyone ran out and got their PS4/XBX they'll all buy the Wii U they secretly wanted to try next. I agree it's not quite in the 'must own' category yet, but it's got some good games already. A system seller like Zelda or Metroid combined with Smash Bros. would put it over the top.
Another Metroid would be great, especially if they go Sidescrool style like Other M (which was hard at some points). As for the next zelda, so far I only heard of an VS all type of game where link is in an arena and fights off waves of monsters. It should be a taster of what they plan to do with the license.

Lack of a second analog stick is really my biggest complaint. It's really pretty major how big of a difference the C-stick makes when playing Melee/Brawl/Project M, especially when it comes to making quick aerials or smashes out of Wavedashes/Shields/Dodges.
Another Metroid would be great, especially if they go Sidescrool style like Other M (which was hard at some points). Zelda Dynasty Warriors is in the works, but there's also been some talk of a Wii-U mainstream Zelda game.

I kow, that's why i said the Zelda arena game will be a testground for befpore the next mainstream Zelda. They need to know the limits of what they can actually do with the Wii-U for a Zelda before bringing us an epic title that can take over the Best trophy in all the Zelda titles (which is handed to the very first with the insane difficulty of not telling you where you need to go, with no tutorial and most of all, intuitive commands, good old days of Zelda). I'm pretty sure some will tell me that the best Zelda game was Ocarina of Time, well it was the best and very first Zelda in 3D Render and Shading, which made it the best, just like Final Fantasy 7 became the best because of the exact same reason. Polygonal graphics made them hits, mix the technology of today with the game style of the very first Zelda and they will have a masterpiece to rule them all! I speak of the zelda games of course.

See, I'm of the opposite opinion. I think Ocarina is massively overrated. As stated already, my favorite Zeldas are all the 2D ones.
Early 3D graphics are actually pretty terrible when compared to modern ones. Even back then, I liked the crisp sprites of the SNES over the blocky polygons from the N64.
I also prefer FF5 and 6 over 7 and 8.
For the most part, I feel like 3D gameplay has weakened a lot of major series, with a few small exceptions - Mario Galaxy, for example, is extremely well done and a great use of 3D, while Mario 64 I find to be a major departure from the series for no great benefit.

Other M is the only metroid game I have not played through to completion. The reason being the controls were just that terrible. It was seriously an abomination after what they showed they could do with the prime trilogy.

Lack of a second analog stick is really my biggest complaint. It's really pretty major how big of a difference the C-stick makes when playing Melee/Brawl/Project M, especially when it comes to making quick aerials or smashes out of Wavedashes/Shields/Dodges.
Zelda Dynasty Warriors is in the works, but there's also been some talk of a Wii-U mainstream Zelda game.
