Has anyone tried playing PDH with decks smaller than the traditional 100 cards?
At this point I've played standard sized lists, and cubed 66-card EDH and PDH decks, finding I vastly prefer the smaller ~60 card ones, both from a build standpoint and simply not having to worry about a huge stack of cards to shuffle, and always falling over when I use new sleeves. I'm also getting to think that PDH in general might benefit from smaller deck sizes. I mean, other than cleaving to traditionally-sized edh decks, what is the net positive for this format by sticking to that number?
One hundred card, singleton pauper decks frequently feel unwieldy to me from a card-function ratio perspective, and the large size of decks I think ekes out more valid deck types and strategies than it actually creates (mill, most combo, certain kinds of control decks, etc). Finally, with considerably fewer non-basic utility lands available at common, most land bases are filled with basic lands, intended less as a way of synergizing with the deck's strategy than simply padding out the remainder of the deck's MD to land ratio.
I still believe in the multiplayer and 30+ life aspects of the game, but think that a lot of creativity and design space could be opened up, by removing the 100 card deck restriction from PDH; more beneficial to the sub-format, than say, sticking to the 100 card deck out of nostalgia for basic edh. I'm planning on discussing trying ~60 card pdh decks with my group sometime to see if we like the format better, but I thought I'd pose this to the community to see what, if anything, folks think about this proposal.
Out of curiosity, how much strong mill is there in Pauper? I can imagine stuff like Balustrade Spy becoming quite a bit more dangerous with a smaller deck size, at least.
Well, I certainly can't speak for everyone, but I wouldn't play it. A big part of what I love about EDH is that it's 100 card highlander. That forces you to dig super deep and use cards that otherwise would just rot in huge bulk boxes until the end of time.

You would never guess, at the terrifying sight of the man, that Hunding was as charming a companion as one could wish for.

This. Plus the increased randomness that a bigger singleton deck brings with it.

Thanks!
