(sigh) I guess having more than 4 cards in a Secret Lair is the exception now. Also, their choices for "Rule the Room" are disappointing to say the least. This would've been a great opportunity to include Korvold or Sedris (both with "King" in their name), but instead we get Arcanis?! Really?
It's amazing how good they at keeping these within the $30 range in value. God forbid a Secret Lair drop actually being a good value.
really like that olvia mobilized for war, and the volkan baga one looks like really good value too.
hate all the arts for the queen marchesa one, really do not like this artists style.
wondering how long it'll be before 3 cards becomes the norm for these things since we're now apparently down to just 4. hate this sales model more and more.
Paton Wizard .. on the one hand that's really scratching the obscure history of lost cards. On the other hand, it gets me in the feels, I used to pilot a deck with 4 copies of it when it was first printed.
Lots of cool art on these cards. As much as I love the city of Tokyo, it just never fails to look weird to me with modern stuff on the cards. It just looks so weird to me, even on something like this. But Secret Lair is definitely where stuff like this should be released.
Can someone explain to me why some cards (Patron Wizard, Verduran Enchantress) have english rule text but german flavor text?
i think cause the artist is german
Actually, all three flavor texts are German!
Patron Wizard: "Always heed the shadows of the old masters. They were there before you were, and shall be there long after you." From Donato's collected wisdom
Berserk: "The first thing I feel is the rage - and then the strength comes."
Verduran Enchantress: "She demands no obedience. Yet nature harkens her plea, and the answer never disappoints." Encyclopedia of Endres, "Nature Magic"
Omg that Akroma with Nivea in the art and flavor text
Kudo's for knowing your Akroma lore. : D
However, seeing Akroma and Nivea alive in the same scene is kinda anachronistic, isn't it? : /
As far as I know, Nivea has so far only been depicted on the Onslaught set's Chain of Vapor and Mage's Guile.
She's my fave! Yeah I like that the art portrays them both, I don't think it's meant to be literal or that they're both alive there since her wing is fracturing off into birds and flowers and depicts Nivea behind her. It just depicts both the creation and the inspiration.
@SimicNuggets Great catch on that visual detail!
I guess I would have preferred some extra hint at Nivea not really being present (maybe some translucent or soft light effect), but yeah, that complete wing on one side versus fractured wing on Nivea's side sure carries the message you're getting at.
: )
Still got some questions regarding that piece (besides why Akroma is still not allowed to sport a beard even in 2022...):
1) Do those doves have more to do with that tear running down Akroma's cheek (since she's made to wage war rather than bring peace) than the Nivea imagery has to do with bringing Akroma to tears?
2) Does the flavortext (quote "Nivea's kind face") including Nivea's depiction in the art (wearing a dress, holding flowers, head bowed down, peace-symbolizing doves flying about the character) completely fly in the face of Nivea's history as a pit warrior?
You should be allowed to purchase any single card as a 4 of. Then I would consider it. I like the artwork on a few but not enough to make me purchase. Pass.

Benjamin Franklin: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
Martin Luther King Jr.: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
Kellogsloops is the best one all around. Best art and best card choices.
Are they doing 5 basic lands in a box for $30? Is that what it's been the whole time? I think I remember someone complaining about that. If so, that's stupid. $6 apiece for basic lands. Yeesh. Seems like you should get four of each.

They've done some other combination of X lands for Y dollars, but yeah 5 for $30 has been their go to. It's definitely gross and amazing people still defend that sort of thing.

Yes. Its what they have been doing since the beginning from what I remember. And multitudes have been calling them out on it since that time as well. They should have options for purchasing 4 ofs.

Still a wonderful piece of art, though.
I can't speak to the artist's intent, obviously, but my read would be that image represents the idealized version of Nivea in Ixidor's memory that guided him in crafting Akroma, and Akroma's tear is there to symbolically represent her lust for vengeance being born out of grief.
I find myself now wishing that Akroma had been characterized enough to understand her status as a symbolic replacement for Nivea and been able to reflect on that (unless she did and I have forgotten? - just as I wish Avacyn had been written to be able to properly reflect on her true status as humanity's zookeeper (protecting and empowering humans, but only enough to keep them alive as livestock for the vampires - a brutal deconstruction of the "savior as a shepherd" metaphor) in her final moments.
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
Point is, card values can vacillate wildly so it seems kinda silly to complain about the $30 box set only being "worth" $30 at time of purchase
It depends on each SL, some are easily worth more than $30, but other times ones below that, including basic land SLs, have no reason to be $30. Like that early mana rock one or a couple recent ones that barely hit $23 before prices shifted.
It's amazing how good they at keeping these within the $30 range in value. God forbid a Secret Lair drop actually being a good value.
Astute observation. They slip up every once in a while but of course they say they aren't concerned with the secondary market.

Retreat to coralhelm is not a hit it’s just under a dollar so far in stocks
the best value lair is the Chris rahn lair especially the foil version
Platinum Angel $10
Huntmaster of the fells $12
Primeval Titan $6 (it’s a important card in modern)
And kozilek, the great distortion $18 (the foil version of this will pay for the lair since it’s $50 heck foils of all the cards is added is around $120)

Yeah I'm sure that's what people thought of the Johannes Voss drop, until Carpet of Flowers hit $35 (and the foil hit $60)
