Kinda ironic that he has vigilance and yet is about to be killed by the guy in the background.
From the flavor text I think the guy in the background is meant to the creature you get when Brazen Upstart dies. Your opponent can deal with Brazen Upstart or risk having to mess with w/e you fetch out when they die.
