Unfortunately, it appears to be the style of that artist. Take a look at the Harmonize.
Done by the same person and just as terrible. I'm trying not to be mean, (edited: actually I don't mind it. This is flat out embarrassing art, the artist and WotC should be ashamed) but this goes beyond subjective art like/dislike.

For those asking in the comments: This is the real deal and legal in Historic! The Where to Find #MTGStrixhaven Previews article is getting a few updates and adjustments today.
I appreciate the fact that they're making cards with more abstract styles, but this is the ugliest card I have ever seen them print.
One would be inclined to ask if it's "an out of season April fool's joke", but 'tis the season lol.
I wouldn't go criticizing the artwork. There are a lot of artists whose skills revolve around hyper-realistic imagery to the point it's hard to differentiate between what's art and what's not. A lot of artists on TikTok demonstrate that and it's believable majority of the time.
Interesting choice to put into the archive. Not sure what impact it will have on historic but anything is possible.

Normally, that is the fallback. Art is very very subjective to the person.
HOWEVER, in this case, Microsoft Paint shapes overlayed on a cut and paste real picture should NOT be a style that WoTC accepts on its Magic Cards.

I think the thing that irks me is the photorealistic skin. Kudos to the artist in the sense that it looks like a photo, however I don't personally want photos as magic art.
The hyperminimalist bits are perfectly fine by me, I liked them even on Harmonize.

I do deeply appreciate that the same forum that reverberates with constant complaints about "samey" art, and how it's all "CGI" and "why don't they do weird stuff like they used to" is also the fastest to spring to complaining about the art anytime they do something slightly different. It's fun.

Don't be self-aware, they'll get mad.
When most people say they want different art, they mean they want the samey art they started the game with, not what the art direction that it's become.

I don't mind "different". The Harmonize art done by the same artist looks nice. I just don't like this art. It's loud and has too many things and they all clash and the mage's robes look stupid and half of it looks done on MSPaint. Even the expression on the mage irks me.

Criticized or not, the artist's job is to communicate visually ~ so if it's not appreciated or if most don't find the art appealing, that's a fail. "Viewers" don't need a college degree for them to appreciate art. As a fine arts grad myself, I appreciate the effort and technique, but there's something about it that's incomplete/off. It's a no for me.

Slightly different is one thing. This is something else, and I don't want to see it. I miss some of the more painterly stuff they used to do. Even some of the more abstract. With this, I miss not seeing it.
Word of Command, Celestial Prism, Treasure Mage, and Stasis have all been criticized for looking amateurish or incomprehensible, but at least they feel like a cohesive piece of art. This looks like one skilled artist was vandalized by a much less skilled artist.

People I've seen here have generally applauded the stylized approach to the mystical archive art (though many are experiencing "frame fatigue"). This artist's style is particularly disruptive, so it's not surprising it got a reaction. I have no disrespect or Carly Mazur, but this isn't the context for that style, just like Reverse Polarity before it. But again, you don't know if you don't try.
That finger on the far left though... it makes me ill at ease.
The style doesn't bother me (I actually really like the harmonize it's reminiscent of Klimt) but I'm not a fan of this. I wouldn't be as rude about it as many on here are (a real person made this by the way, I wouldn't talk to a real person the way a lot of you are talking about this), but yeah it's not my cup of tea. I think it's the eyes and the cloths that really miss for me.

I'm not sure what less believable: the art, or the fact that they're bringing Faithless Looting into Historic.

if real and not one of the 7 banned in historic, I'll imagine that Arclight Phoenix decks will be the next top contender.
Collage style art just feels strange on an MTG card
This does look like one of the silliest card arts I've ever seen in mtg outside of an un-set
