Remember the cardboard 2015 Modern Masters booster packs? I’m guessing that this means those (or something similar) will be used permanently for future MTG sets.
PAWTUCKET, R.I.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 20, 2019-- Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ: HAS) announced today that, beginning in 2020, it plans to begin phasing out plastic from new product packaging, including plastic elements like polybags, elastic bands, shrink wrap, window sheets and blister packs. The company’s ambition is to eliminate virtually all plastic in packaging for new products by the end of 2022.
I mean if they can design them better so they don't scuff the cards this is a really good change imo.

That’s the big rub though. Can they manage that? Those packs were a nightmare. I have to imagine the only way to keep the cards from getting scuffed up is to either make the package so tight around the cards that they can’t move around at all or to wrap the cards in some tissue paper or something before they go into the pack.
I was contemplating that a few weeks ago at an M20 draft. Too much plastic is being used especially in an age of environmental awareness as strong as it is now.
They can make packaging that's biodegradable without going the MoMa route and that fiasco. Cute idea but poorly executed last time. Hopefully they learned their lesson.

If you want to help the environment this kind of plastic is much better than using paper or wood material.
Plastic isnt bad at all, unless you throw it directly into the world and leave it there.
In any reasonable cycle where plastic is put in the garbage, a lot of plastic is recycled very well.
----
shrink wrap is a pretty essential protection, without it all the packs are just out to get destroyed to humidity.
Thats probably a pretty big quality loss in itself.

are they though? lots of people have their loose cards in boxes and they do just fine.
So in order to reduce their environmental impact, they're going to replace all of their product packaging with paper-based stuff, which requires the harvesting of more trees...?
Logic checks out
Hopefully they'll find some other biodegradable alternative to paper, or they'll stick to recycled paper materials exclusively.
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.

Paper products are actually pretty sustainable. You just grow new trees and log them in a managed way. The usual stuff you hear about amazon deforesting is people clearing land for farms, not for the wood.

Paper products are at least recyclable. A lot of cheap plastic just gets burned or blown into the ocean and can't be recycled anyways.
I'm all for this change. This is the type of stuff I want to see more of.

A large percentage of trees consumed for paper pulp are GMO. I don't recall specifics but I think less than 10% or so is from non-GMO. The wood from OG trees is usually too valuable to simply pulp.
But I digress. WotC needs to prove to me that packaging the cards in paper is tamper proof. As it stands, the last time they did paper packs, it was an absolute screw up. I don't want to sit there and wonder if that glob of glue on the corner is evidence of tampering.

Those cards aren’t making transcontinental trips in those boxes. These cards are made overseas and shipped here on boats. Humidity is an issue.
Removing plastic only makes sense in a economic point of view. Maybe they have data to suport that using paper and other materials will be cheaper in 5 or soo years, etc
