Join me next week, when I'll finally get around to telling you what our new introductory product is going to be.
So there will be a new intro product to replace the core sets / intro packs / event decks / clash packs. And we'll find out what form that takes next week.
Could involve the sample deck rares, might not.
Speculate away, I suppose.
Hopefully it's a set where they just reprint cards that need reprinting and fill the gap between all of the new card sets. There are a lot of old cards I'd love to see in a new core set.
I'd hope whatever it is, it's designed to get newbie players familiar with the different colors, as well as the evergreen mechanics, but have relatively little complexity outside the evergreen mechanics, and the cards in the current version of it will all be made Standard and Modern legal.
Definitely hope it's something better than the terrible intro decks.
When did the "booster battle game" packs come out anyway? I saw one for the first time ever at Walmart the other day. I had no idea those existed until now.

I think they may have come out back in 2011 or 2012.
I will agree, hopefully these are better than the intro packs. Right now the only reason those are decent is if one of the rares are good enough and are the face card so it comes with alternate art and foil so it means a bit of value. If not then the intro packs are just terrible to incredibly subpar for anything more than starting out.
It's gonna be a set of 200 cards from a randomized pool of ~400 reprints, with a stack of basic lands to boot. And it'll be called the M17 Fat Pack! Get on the hype guys!
The main thing - it must be avaiable at all 11 languages. Stores all over the world need intro packs in native language. Earlier we have Base Set Intro Pack. But without Base Set in new system, we don't have anything.
My theory was precons with solid commons/uncommons, but random rares/mythic rares for that precon's color; either in the form of a pack or not. It's not like new player understand that not all rares fit in every deck; it's just to make them feel good. I would hope that a random in-color rare would make the product too much of a gamble for people to buy it just to gut for the rares. Additionally, chase non-rares are typically cheaper to buy as singles online; ideally.
tl;dr — a precon that is not cost-effective to gut for chase cards via randomization.
Like I mentioned in an earlier post, I would like to see a "Core Set" that is chock full of simple cards that need reprinting. Simple cards? There are so many cool cards that could come together to make a core set that would be both easy for new players to understand as well as cards that would be fun for older players to see come back, as well as cards that could actually be useful in standard or modern, depending on which set they're reprinted from.

This. This is exactly what I want. A pseudo core set/deck builder's toolkit that is standard legal. A fixed or semi-random assortment of cards including useful reprints that can be used by newer players to create fairly decent FNM level decks right out of the box. I think it would really help a lot of people get into the game if they could sit down and be reasonably competitive at the game store on Fridays just from spending, say, $20(?) on a starter box like this.
Essentially a better Toolkit but hey.

I hope it's not draftable. So it'd be chock full of value reprints.
Everything is draftable if you you're a drafting addict like me. I made a really nice cube for my bros and friends, but afterwards one of my friends made the crappiest pauper cube I've ever seen, and we still had a blast with all the crap cards. If there are cards, it can be drafted.

Yeah, this would be great. I need something with as few keywords as possible to use for teaching my kids to play. Right now, I just have to go through and pull out vanilla creatures or a few creatures with almost no keywords and hope they make for a reasonable blend. It's not ideal.

I think this concept, coupled with "core" sets from here on out having a distinct, ongoing story on a single plane(a la Dominaria and the many stories/sets set there) separate from the main stories with maybe 2/3 new cards the rest reprints would be the best way to get new players into the game, make them interested in more than just playing the game(to keep them hooked, like the Pokemon cartoon/manga/etc), and ease them into more competitive play.
My guess, pre-constructed introductory decks for all five colors. Hopefully, depending on what goes in them, they randomly insert foils as well, especially if some of the cards are completely new to the game.
Why are people excited about this in any way? Was there any reason to be excited about the 30-card teaching decks? Or about the Deckbuilders Toolkits? Or Event Decks (minus the last one)? No, no, and no. Yes, its new and mysterious, but its not going to be made in any way with established players/collectors/mtgfinance-jerks in mind.

I second this. Unless this is "From the Vault: Loot Pinata" type of deal with cards that desperately need reprinting that aren't on the reserve list (looking at you crucible of the worlds), another pointless intro product with crap offerings is not something anyone needs.
The free sampler decks do better at teaching newbies. Plus.. their free. No one wants to drop 20 bones on crap that they can't even use in any competitive sense.

Almost every event deck was good to play or Had value cards in them thus Your point Is Not valid At all 3:)

From the very bottom of MaRo's latest Mothership article (which is, incidentally a pretty good read)...
