The facebook comments are entertaining. I kind of agree though on the legacy part. I left the game in 2009/10, selling off multiple playsets of all the dual lands for cheap and many other eternal staples.
I just started getting back into it to find out that Legacy blew up all the prices and was a lot of sticker shock from what I've seen.
Now a main organizer is pulling out of this and leaving Legacy out to dry. Good for me, hopefully can buy in again at not such inflated rates over the next year or so, but not so good for players and investors that got into it.
Scg made plenty of profit from legacy. I'm willing to bet that there's a lot more people selling than they are buying. So it's likely a business driven decision. The prize will, in the other hand, is terrible. I hate that switch at the gps too.
The prizewall at GP's has literally only replaced the booster prizes. So there at least it's good. Also, from what I was reading the premier sunday events were losing money, since their was a fixed prized support and weren't enough players turning up to them. There's also the fact that legacy events don't get enough people to justify a 2 day event, which is what the main events are now to cope with the 1500 standard players that turn up to those. I'm sure if enough demand they may go to legacy again.
Hopefully people start selling off their legacy stuff so the prices fall and I can scoop it up for cheap.
Wont happen, many people will hold on to them as they will still have value in other formats such as commander or incase they want to keep their decks.
I can't help but feel like wizards keeps trying to bury their past in the sands of time and hope we don't remember the past. I mean many of the original articles from the old website weren't brought over and with the introduction of magic duels, I can't help but feel a bleak expectation for the future. Magic Online is buggy and I don't see much desire from Wizards to change that. Let alone a desire to catalog everything that has happened in Mtgverse as a giant compendium. I trust mtgsalvation more than I trust wizards own website these days because at least salvation record everything down.
I mean first they begin to ignore/retcon past storyline events.
Then they add things like angels to planes that don't have them.
They no longer have stories revolving around non-PW characters.
Magic has changed so much I don't really recognise it as the same game. Which is quite sad as it was once a game where people traded cards like moxes for a Shivan Dragon. Now standard competitive decks cost about the same as a modern deck. It can be quite daunting for a child/parent in terms of cost.
I think wizards is trying to erase the past. They don't want the new players coming in to know about the old cards that used to exist. They have changed the direction of the game completely. Personally I play legacy and to a lesser extent modern. I would never touch standard again. The newbies don't know how much more fun the game was once. They even tried to cut modern down, but the massive outcry made them somewhat reverse their decision. Basically they just want people to keep burning money on limited and standard and not think about anything else.

You know why this is, right? Wizards has no reason to move people en mass to legacy or other eternal formats. They only make money off of people cracking packs for standard and limited. A player coming in and buying into legacy or modern is not going to affect Wizards at all. If they don't try to migrate players towards the new stuff they'd shut down and Magic would most likely die out as I can't think of many LGSs that could stay in business without selling cards.
And to be honest I've played with the old cards. Better is highly subjective. Plenty of older sets were absolute failures in terms of design, balance, and "fun" in my opinion.

but... This is SCG, not WotC.
Well, there's notthing SCG can do about the declining number of players who can afford Legacy if WotC refuses to reprint dual lands, LED, etc.
The resserved list killed Legacy, not SCG. I will be the first to say I hate their shady business ways, but at least they kept the best format alive as long as they could.
Shame about the declining support for Legacy, but ultimately I blame WotC and the reserved list. Affordable duals -> more legacy players -> increased support. I'm sure that SCG would not cut back on Legacy if the format was growing, it doesn't make sense business-wise. I take this as a sign that Legacy is on the decline.
The prize wall is a load of BS though! When my LGS substituted boosters with store credit for singles as prizes in Modern and Legacy events, attendance went up and people started caring more about winning. A lot of Modern and Legacy players don't play Standard or Limited, myself included, so I have absolutely no use for booster packs, and trying to trade them or sell them isn't easy, especially since that same LGS don't let you bring your own boosters to drafts. Rewarding a tournament winning Legacy player with his choice of deck boxes, boosters or playmats is a ridiculous proposal - they have spent thousands on the deck, they'd like to get some back. The whole concept feels childish and dumb.

When I hit my 3000 post mark, I'm gone for good.
Stay reasonable, be mindful of your expectations and don't feed the trolls.
I think one option to get more players into legacy is to allow proxies of reserved listed cards in lower level tournaments (and sell in bulk official proxie cards for tournaments that could maybe look like a checklist card). Then have pro-tours and world championships not allow proxies to appease older fans. I think that most people who qualify for high level tournaments have the money to get the actual cards.
Hopefully people start selling off their legacy stuff so the prices fall and I can scoop it up for cheap.
Wont happen, many people will hold on to them as they will still have value in other formats such as commander or incase they want to keep their decks.

There have been several times and places where retcons needed to happen. Planeswalkers going from gods to superheroes is a bit of a change, but it does help the game in that cards have a face. Commander has been a good change, in that we see nameless characters from older sets get reprints along with newer characters added from old planes.
The latest Commander set has Karlov, a ghost council member, that is over 10 years old as a character. We had P3K reprints, we even had last year's red deck put in an old, obscure character from Dominaria that was an excellent red commander. We have had several great nods.
The largest problem has been the reserved list. The price point for Legacy has been too much without reprints. It means that the game has to change or close a chapter. Legacy is now Vintage, all of us that have played the game since Legacy's inception knew that this would happen. And that day is now here. People just don't play Legacy. Commander and Cube are the successors to Legacy, that are able to continue to evolve.
It's mostly supply this is why Extended was cut and Modern created. Modern is the new Legacy and will carry the game forwards, eventually another cut off point will be made for another "semi eternal" format.

Life is a beautiful engineer, yet a brutal scientist.
If they had not gone to 2 day events, it's highly likely Legacy would still be around since they could afford to run the events, 400+ people for 1 day makes sense. But compare that to the 1500 2 day standard event. Money talks sadly.
Hopefully people start selling off their legacy stuff so the prices fall and I can scoop it up for cheap.

The Reserved list was looked at a few years back and Wizards attempted to get rid of it, but there was such an outcry from the vintage and collectible crowd that it was axed pretty quickly. They were attempting to reprint Reserved List cards in premium format and the crying was so bad they upheld the List and dropped the idea. Players want the Reserved List gone, but MTGFinance is a very strong and vocal group that will do what it can to hold on to their investment.

It's Hasbro/WotC's fault no matter how many scapegoats we conjure.
At least with Modern, WotC can reprint any card at the drop of a hat. Think of the fetch lands and how much they cost before they were re-printed in Khans of Tarkir. The enemy fetch lands are now jumping in price and they can be reprinted in any upcoming set, especially now that WotC has basically gotten rid of the allied vs. enemy unbalance.
While Snapcaster Mage is expensive right now, but it could show up again in the upcoming Innistrad set or in the next Modern Masters set.
Well this just ruined magic for basically all the legacy players out there. I don't play standard, I barely play modern, and they just removed my favorite format from relevance.

Some pretty major changes to the 2016 calendar.
Looks like Legacy is basically getting the axe, also 'Classic' tourneys are now paying out in prize wall tickets.
All in all, everyone seems to be blowing up their page with rage and salt.
