You can tell that they did that out of necessity. The Karn daily spoiler preview implies that they were originally going to spoil the cards normally, little by little.

Today's preview card represents Karn of the near future

I think they should just have continued with the spoilers normally: this just seems... really weird. I guess Preview Weeks won't really exist this time around...
Rolling with the punches. Possibly the best move. Still sorry they couldn't spoil it the way they wanted.
I agree. While this is a spoiler site, making a whole two weeks of planned content nearly unnecessary is awfully unfortunate. At least the articles themselves still have content for us, even without the allure of preview cards.
but a lot less people will read them
i know that i myself would only look at spoiler articles to get to the card
and perhaps if it intrigued me enough i would read about it, but now there is no point
I know, and that's what makes me sad. I gladly read those articles for their content alone but I know that many others will only ever go to the mothership if something new is being announced or previewed. They lost a lot of potential site traffic.
I honestly did not expect this. I expected them to do the normal slow-roll despite the "Leak", especially after the article about how they wouldn't comment on the "Leak". Anyway, I guess they decided to drop the whole act and just deal with it like this instead. It's always great to have the sortable spoiler.

Tiny bit of a shame, it always amused me seeing wizards trying to overhype cards from the next set and going on about how great they are etc. Especially when they weren't.
This whole ordeal saddens me. Now it's like WotC is just admitting defeat, and I feel terrible for them. I really don't mind one or two unintentional spoilers, but this must make them feel like all their hard work was tossed down the drain.
I think this was really the best action they could have taken, at least for the sake of the online stores that do pre-orders facing the guilt of trying to sell unofficially confirmed product.

You know I kind of agree with you here. It just shows that even though they are hurt by this release, they still want to do what's best for magic.

How so? The work was on the set, not the hype. The set will still be released. Like any other set, it will mainly succeed or fail based on the cards, not how they are spoiled. [Chase rare of your choice] isn't any worse because we know about it in advance.
A lot of people like it better this way. We get to discuss cards with the proper perspective, instead from the distorted perspective of someone who knows only a fraction of the set. Perhaps they'll look at what happened and decide to do future set releases this way.
I guess this was the best decision they could have made.
Of course, not to be a conspiracy nut job, but may be Wizards wanted to see how we would react, and see if it was even worth continuing the spoiler week and such.
I'm shocked. I really am. I honestly did not expect them to fold like this. I suppose this was the best course of action, but still. It hurts to know that two weeks of the biggest spoilers in recent MTG history are worth nothing now.
The only thing positive I can see of this is them putting it on Gatherer early and thus hitting Cockatrice early.

I second this. It surprised me though -- I expected them to carry on as normal, like they did with Judgement.

Did that and never read.
I'm sorry. I think that this whole thing has been a disaster. I feel bad for WotC.

On another note, it looks like WoTC made some EDH rulings about Karn. So much for leaving everything to the rules committee.
