Just to add more fuel to the split set idea, I received some WPN info on the Scars Game Day from wizards. The day will have an optional constructed feature called "affiliated decks". This is important enough to have specific prizes for - the prizes are preview cards for Mirrodin Besieged.
From the email:
"The ultimate constructed deck event – with a twist!
Scars of Mirrodin Game Day gives your customers a shot at glory in the coming conflict. Available for the first time to Core level WPN locations around the world, Scars of Mirrodin Game Day is a great way for your local players to interact and see how the new cards shape the Constructed metagame.
Scars of Mirrodin Game Day features a standard format, showcasing the new cards in the most popular format world-wide. Players will also have the option to “affiliate” their deck to earn special prizes.
Event Prizes
A foil card for the top 8 winners!
Preview cards from Mirrodin Besieged™ for the top 4 “affiliated” winners."
Also one of the key selling points given is "Scars of Mirrodin will have an integrated consumer experience unlike any previous Magic™ set."
What DOES it mean to "affiliate" a deck? Could this have something to do with the watermarks of the Mirrodin/Phyrexian symbols? And what does it take to make an "integrated consumer experience"?
Yeah, I assume that it means to have as much cards with the same watermark as possible, kinda like the Shards release tournaments (correct me if I'm wrong, but they required you to build your decks around one Shard).
Integrated consumer experience may mean that the results of these tournaments actually matter: like, if Mirrodin wins more often all over the world, then the third set is Mirrodin Pure, if it's Phyrexia who triumphs, then we're in for New Phyrexia. Even though I'm not sure how does that supposed to work out.

This. I thought of this too as I was reading.
The actions of the players will determine if Mirrodin becomes corrupted or is purified. Brilliant marketing. It's not going to be a split set at the end of the block.
The timing probably works out well too. We decide during the first set and the changes mainly manifest in the last. The third set will probably also have been mostly designed and developed by that point down both possibilities and then locked in as early as the game day. I suspect that we'll hear officially about this a month or so before the game day.
I am siding with the Mirrodin Pure faction then. I think.
EDIT: It will be funny though, if there are wonky interactions between cards of the different factions. Then what does it take to 'affiliate' with the faction of your choice?
That means there's a split set. Affiliate with the side you want, and consumers control the packs they want.
Nonsense - especially when said with such unbased certainty. Was Shards of Alara a split set? There was a similar thing concerning SoA tournaments. Buy a deck just from colors from one shard and you will be rewarded.
Note that there are *special* prizes for those who "affiliate" their decks. Of anyone could choose which faction they get, what's the point in having special prizes?

Call this a dumb idea if you wish but the other 2 set names we no of that we believe to be part of this block are Mirrodin Pure and New Phyrexia right. Both of these could represent the different end points of a journey.
Is it possible that WOTC could be doing something similar with Scars block that DC did with Death in the Family, put the fate of Mirrodin/Karn in our hands with this. If more people place higher with decks affiliated to phyrexia we will get the new Phyrexia set or we get the Mirrodin pure if the Phryexian affiliated decks do badly.

this is the game day, its standard constructed. you wont be choosing what packs you get or anything
Okay. In that case, stating that there is a split set based on this info makes even less sense than before.
As for the theory that the Game Day results will help to shape the last set...i cannot see this as a viable option. The only way how it can be made would be that they already designed and developed BOTH alternate sets (if Mirrodin Pure/New Phyrexia are the options), and subsuequently completely scrape one of them. Would they really waste time and energy on this?
On the other hand, they never cease to surprise.

Or you forgot my personal favorite theory. They'll seed one faction with stronger cards and essentially determine which faction will win. They know Baneslayer's a powerhouse. Just print something like her on the Mirrodin faction and the odds that they win dramatically increase... unless everyone plays the opposite, but just how many spikes out there would be willing to play a weaker side just to try and sway the end result?

And hey, they could always release the other set some other time, like Coldsnap.
I don't think they'd NOT release a set they've been working on for so long; so personally I doubt that this "players determine which set will be" will happen.
But it's too early to tell.

They could have designed the set, giving each card 2 different names depending on which set it is, and they'll just print the cards with the names of whatever set it's in. Saying it'll be a different set doesn't mean it'll have different cards.

Wait. Wrong game. Sorry I got them confused for a second there.
But seriously, that is a bit what this sounds like to me. Not that I really mind, it just seems like this could be frustrating in terms of deck construction for what is a really insignificant event.

That would make no sense, since Phyrexia is pure black and artifacts and mirrodin is 5 color and artifacts.
Also, Phyrexia and Mirrodin have very distinct flavors.

Really? Who said that? Do you know something about the storyline that I don't? Please, do tell.
While it is true that in the past this is the way it's been, the fact that Yawgmoth is dead could have changed any number of things about Phyrexia. Additionally, since all (natural) life on Mirrodin was removed save Glissa and Slobad, both of whom are likely dead at this point, you have no basis for your other claim.
So please, if you're hiding information from me, do share.

To be fair, there's no reason to speak historically here.
When you're speculating on the relationship between two historical and separate entities, then there is no reason not to incorporate their respective histories.

Do we know what Mirrodin Besieged is? Maybe this is actually the name of the set and Mirrodin Pure / New Phyrexia are trademarked subsets of the set.
Mirrodin Besieged is (to a great surprise of many) the actual name of the second set, revealed this morning.
