I'm surprised no one else picked up on this. From a transcript of an online chat with Mark Rosewater and Ken Nagle, posted on the Magic Online forum at Wizards (link-- http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1098927):
<+Deenreka> Was there originally supposed to be another card set aside for the pre-release? If so, why was it shunted and what was it, also, if it was already printed, will it see a crystiline sliver type run, if not, what went into the decision to have the same card for the release and pre-release? <@KennethNagle> (asking Forsythe) <@Maro> It was a timing issue. Next time and all future times, it will be two different cards. <@Maro> It wasn't a matter of us wanting to have it be the same. <@Maro> Sometimes logistics make things happen suboptimally. <@KennethNagle> We realize it's simply a sadder world to live in with the same pre/release card.
Nice news to hear, especially considering how many people were unhappy about both having the same card this time. Thanks to Hamtastic on PureMTGO for the original link.
I don't think it is that big a deal. I mean, when they first showed the SoA one, some people said that, because it's mythic, they probably don't want to give out two. Now they'll most likely do one rare, one mythic, or both rare.

Like they used to do rare/uncommon pre-Morningtide. No complaints here.

Tarmogoyf has no evasion, yet it sees tonnes of play. What makes this any different?
Good. Giving out the same card twice pretty much tanked both the value of Ajani Vengeant and the point of going to the Release events. A new card will do a lot to help in both cases for Conflux.
Well, I liked getting a ton of Ajanis. Besides, here, the prerelease was bigger despite the change to let almost anyone have one and the release was still the same size. I don't think the promo hurt anything, especially since one guy went to prereleases at 2 different stores on both days as well as playing in the prerelease so he could get 8 of them. I guess the real issue is that with one promo for both, it had better be a good one.
I'm with you guys who hates the same promo for both pre release and release. I sure hope Conflux will have different promos for prerelease and release. I sure hope both are mythics, but even if one is mythic and the other is a mere rare, I'm still totally fine with that. (btw, in case you're wondering why I want both promos to be mythic, it's because I love the Morningtide, Shadowmoor and Eventide pre and releases, where both promo for each set are rares)
Yeah the prerelease at our shop was packed to the 24 mark I believe.
BUT, literally the release had 4 people and none of which wanted the same damn promo again.
This is good news to hear. Me and my friends have Ajani's coming out of our ears. Hopefully it will be a Mythic for the pre release and a rare for the release.
Yeah our shop guy has tons of Ajanis left over. he's making them fnm bonus prizes till he runs out. I like having different promos for each event because it helps separate the two, but when the end up giving us a mythic for the PR and a rare for the release you just know people are going to flood with complaints about how unfair it is.

So it was a timing issue, it makes a lot of sense that it was just a mistake, I was quite put off by the fact that they gave only 1 card for both events, I actually expected a very low turnout for Release events and this seems definitely the case, quite the blunder if you ask me.....now if they could actually give us some mechanics that show up in something other than friggin' critters for Conflux along with promo cards of Demigod and Figure quality;)
Having the same promo at both the events may be a problem when the card isn't of high quality, like Ajani Vengeant is currently considered.
However, I'm sure that tournament attendance would've reached records if the promo was Figure of Destiny for both the release and prerelease of Eventide, which was instead given to less people. The market was instead overflood with the very playable[/sarcasm] Overbeing of Myth.
Now that they're back to two, they have to choose carefully the power level.

It took people a while to realize that Figure of Destiny was any good... I don't think that would have made the release party more popular. The fact that you had to play two sealed in one pay period was the unappealing part...

^-- And this is exactly why these forums are for whiny little babies who can't deal with the fact that they are wrong. So they go cry to a mod. Lawl.
