Jester's cap is really the best answer I think for so many of the decks in Vintage right now. I handled that Goyf deck the other night by simply taking out his one dreadnaught and 3 goyfs. GG.
Did you run across much Oath in that tourney Stupid? I'm kinda curious how it all played out for ya.
I managed to avoid oath, but my brother was playing oath, you take out the 4x juggs, 2x pithing needle, and 2 random cards. Bring in 5 rebs and 3 duplicants. This match is still bad, they have the ability to drop turn 1 oath with an orchard and you just lose.
As far as gush, i never actually got to cap them i brought them in game 2 each time and never saw them. I just drop lock pieces and reb and recalls and other mass artifact removal. I think Gush based decks is this decks best match up.
the only problem with bringing it cap against oath is that i have a hard time deciding what to take out. i am allready taking out 8 cards against oath making it 11, it the right choice but not one i find easy to make on a consistant basis. I am always open to suggestions.
I think he means he has trouble deciding what to bring out of his own deck.
I'd probably take out 4 Juggs, 2 Needles, 2 Trikes, a Shaman, and maybe a simularcum or something. That should be plenty of removed cards.
The logic there is that Dupps replace Trikes, Caps replace Juggs (same cc, and Cap just strait up wins, and also decreased risk/reliance of winning by means of creatures, which is arguably less optimal vs oath), and Blasts replace needles and X number of other cards, serving a similar function as needle disruption wise, but probably being more optimal considering the gushbond engine.
congrats on the win! Did you face any Ichorid? I have found that matchup to be very difficult, and I dont see any leylines in your list. Also did you see any painter decks? What else made the top 8?

Round One: Bill Copes playing Stax
Bill seems like a nice guy till I see that he's playing Stax and realize (by way of a concrete Magic formula I learned from my 4th grade math teacher) he has no soul.
the top 8 was 4 mono red aggrod stax, 1 painter, 1 flash and 1 oath
i played painter in teh top 8, then oath, then flash.
the tourny was 6 rounds
i face gush tendrils 1, oath 1, gat 1, and then bomberman. bomberman was my only game loss the entire day. the drew the final 2 rounds and went into top 8 in second.
Here is the list I've been running for 10 games or so. Won 7 games. Lost to Ichorid, TSOath & Fish. Won to an array of Slaver, Stax, Tendrills combo, GAT, NLD, and 2 decks I don't exactly recall right now. Some of those win were extremely close to losses.
It's alright. I really like to discard 2cc lock pieces to Masticore and then weld them in to play around COTV @ 2. I feel that strenghtening the lock is necessary where I play, but only time will tell. I guess what without ponder and brainstorm, COTV @ 1 is not as good as it was. Otherwise, Chalice could improve some matchups. The really bad thing is that it prevents Welder from hitting the board when set at 1...
Sooooo i'd like it if vintage initiates could tell me what makes no sense in this build.
The interesting thing about us legacy players is that we consider Force of Will, Dark Ritual, Blood Moon, Tarmogoyf and Swords to Plowshare to be fair.
@Xwt, your deck looks very strong. the only thing i see missing is ancient tomb. but with your curve it doesnt seem like you need it.
The only difference I see in your list and the one I play is I run Triskelion over masticore, and tangle wire over chalice. Lately I have been really liking tangle wire as it taps down blockers and is stupid strong with an active welder.

i do not like crucible in this deck anymore, with magus of the moon around so often your own wastelands are usually mountains. I do also have to agree with huey about trike. I play trike over masticore, but if the format turns more aggro i think masticore might find a play back in the maindeck.
I never played crucible myself, I can run on a lot of non-basics, what with magus of the moon and all. I do love swinging for 4 (or six) with a SoFaI equipped Magus for game.
I favored Razormane Masticore MD because I can ditch lock pieces that cost 2 when Chalice is on the board and weld them back in. I guess that I'll experiment with Trike MD and Tangle Wire over Chalice of the Void. I can't think of it as being bad, but more like a question of field or preference. Creature decks are pretty popular where I play at the moment, but who knows what the restictions will bring.
Crucible of Worlds indeed is average at best. I don't think I actually sided them in even once. I put them there recalling it was good in monobrown.

If your meta has alot of creature based decks I would replace the crucibles with duplicants. They are so good against oath...if oath even exists after B/R take affect... and they are very good with an active welder as well.

Would anyone care to comment on the usefulness of a traditional stax build in the current meta compared to aggro monoR shops? It seems that a 9sphere aggro build would be a stronger choice and has been top8ing more in the past few months.
Also, as mentioned above, is there a point to Chalice @ 1 in the current meta? With ponder and brainstorm restricted, it seems like chalice should get the boot over more proactive options like Tanglewire.
Although this deck lost no cards during the rotation, it has put up no results that I know of since then, and seems to have been replaced by gilded claw etc, likely because the deck was built to feed off of the now demolished GaT. I'll leave the thread here for a bit longer, but unless any of you really believe it is still a deck to beat, I'm going to be considering archiving it.
If I'm not completely mistaken, I believe this arch type is still competitive. However, it seems that the builds that seem to do well now days run creatures like Gorilla Shaman and Duplicant MD.
i am taking my new form of this take to vintage champs. i will post how i do with the list after i come back. i think any deck with a 9 sphere, chalice and mox monkey in this format should be able to put up some good results. we will see.
ok, here is how my vintage champs went
round 1, dont remeber his name. he was playing some form of grim long. he played a pearl game 1 and a black lotus and grim tutor game 2 that is it.
round 1 2-0
round 2, rich shay
i kept a very good hand and he did not. i think i had 3 spheres and 2 chalices out when i killed him.
game 2. he goes turn 1 tarmagoyf ( it is an 0-1 ). i play a sphere. he did not play much for a few turns. i play a few spheres and then duplicant his goyf. he attempts to go off just before he dies but fails.
round 2 2-0
round 3 paul ( the vintage champion paul )
game 1 i drop trinisphere turn 1 followed by magus turn 2, i win
game 2 i drop a bunch of spheres and creatures. he plays negator. i drew into welder. i was at such a low life from my own antcient tombs, that the trample damage from negator was a huge factor. i drew into triple solemn simulacum with an active welder and eventually won the race
round 3 3-0
round 4 jason ( the oath player that topped 8ed )
i was never in either game. i think this match is by far my worst matchup possible.
round 4 3-1
round 5 dont remember his name he was playing stiflenought
i dont remeber what really happened, i know game 1 i won, game 2 he turn 1ed dreadnought. game 3 he died to his own dark confidant after some tragic misplays on his part.
round 5 4-1
round 6 jimmy ( he took 2nd )
game 1 i guess he kept a bad hand. he was dead on turn 4-5 from juggernauts.
game 2 i was never in. he ended rather quickly. we were done games 1 and 2 by the time most were half way through game 2.
game 3. this was a long drawn out game. i had at 1 time 5 spheres, 2 chalices, 2 crypts in play. he eventually got a engineered explosives played for 1 but sunbursted it for 2. he got wleder online and i took about 15 damage from that welder. he got trisk and i lost. game 3 i never saw a mountain he mana drained both of my simulcrums.
round 6 4-2
round 7 dont know who
at this point i did not care. i punted both games against metalworker combo.
round 7 4-3
ok, yet again i get so close with this deck.
Now for some serious discussion about this deck. I did not lose a single game to pitchlong or grimlong. With the exception of rich Shay trying to go off in the last minute, i was never really in danger against them. I know oath is a bad match, i have the rigth answers for that match, i just have to draw them. Control Slaver, i can not seem to beat a good player piloting this deck. I would like to see what everyone thinks about answers against it.
Props
i was the one to beat the vintage champion Paul in the swiss rounds
the deck played very well
i had fun
my friend nick top 16ed
i got 4 foiled welders and 3 foiled japanese swords for rather cheap
slops
i can never break through to top 8
my deck sucked agaisnt slaver
shattering spree is the worst card in my deck
certain players telling me after i lost to jimmy that i got lucky to get this far.
Well this varient of stax has been poping up recently in top 8 all over the place. I like the way the deck plays out, i am a more of aggro player. It runs 9 spheres witch can give control and combo fits. It runs enough larger creatures to handle goblins and GAT. And i still think Magus of the Moon is house in type 1 if it stays in play.
Here is my list, they are many different variations.
What are you so afraid of that pithing needle answers your fears. Null Rod handles all the artifacts. I would never needle a fetch land. What else is there that is dangerous?
You need to post more than that. I have played this deck in every type 1 event i have played in for the last 18 months. I have never wanted a pithing needle in my hand or in play. What do you think it is amazing against.
Did you run across much Oath in that tourney Stupid? I'm kinda curious how it all played out for ya.

That'd neuter them.

-4 juggs
-2 pithing needle
-2 trikes
-2 shaman
-1 solemn
bring in
+5 rebs
+3 caps
+3 duplicant
this is still this decks worst tier 1 match up
