Isn't this just a variant of staxless stax?
And what is the point of chalice of the void in today's meta now that brainstorm and ponder have been restricted?
Duress, Thoughtseize, Welder... 1 drops are still good even if DA 1-drop has been restricted. It's not alllllll about brainstorm.

The interesting thing about us legacy players is that we consider Force of Will, Dark Ritual, Blood Moon, Tarmogoyf and Swords to Plowshare to be fair.
Why move the spheres to the board? wouldnt moving the Thorns make more sense? I would assume spheres are better against everything than thorns. They are dead draws against goblins, and they are not very good against fish either. can someone explain?

Round One: Bill Copes playing Stax
Bill seems like a nice guy till I see that he's playing Stax and realize (by way of a concrete Magic formula I learned from my 4th grade math teacher) he has no soul.
Alright, first of all this deck evolved from gilded claw, and despite structural similarities to stax, it plays a very different game, which is why it has a different thread. Furthermore, this deck is putting up results, and under this name.
Chalice's primarily function is at 0 in this meta, most decks have gone back to full moxen, etc, and so chalice at 0 is a very powerful play. After that, chalice facilitates options like setting it at 2 against oath, at one against combo, etc; that is, it is a very powerful spell regardless.
Thorn is maindeck because most decks aren't extremely creature based, but you run a fair amount of them. In this sense, thorn becomes almost one sided a lot of the time, and facilitates a lighter mana base; it also makes it a lot easier to drop stuff like welder post-sphere and to get to the mana necessary for your big threats while it disrupts counter-measures. It should be noted that your creatures tend to be superior in in combat as well; and decks like goblins really aren't very popular, and fish hasn't proved to be a real metagame force yet. Even then, you can just board the spheres in. However, the most popular decks at the moment seem to be CS, long, oath, and stuff in that vein; that is, decks with few or no creatures, which makes thorn a more optimal card from your standpoint.
Spheres are in the board to fend off combo, mostly.
To be honest I haven't seen this deck yet before. I would like to add my 2 cents ok.
Drop the following and try these adds.
Drop the Welders down to 2. A nice pocket pair is all you need for this build plus you have tutors.
I would run only one bazaar of baghdad just for that freak chance in a opening hand and besides the tutors are there again if needed.
Coalition is something I don't want to waste that much time on because you're going to see that my added cards are lands.
Your land base is unstable and I know you're getting results but hear me out.
Adding 4 City of Traitors or Ancient Tomb's {I would play the Tombs} will indeed put your opponent on a 2 turn pressure clock. This deck is about control in a colorless manner at that from what I'm seeing!
You're putting pressure on them from the start and your random kill or board conditions are wonderful while Juggeraunts just pound them!
4 Chalice of the Void
4 Thorn of Amethyst
1 Trinisphere
4 Goblin Welder
4 Juggernaut
2 Triskelion
1 Karn, Silver Golem
1 Platinum Angel
1 Sundering Titan
2 Crucible of Worlds
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Tinker
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Memory Jar
1 Crop Rotation
1 Balance
2 Bazaar of Baghdad
1 Tolarian Academy
1 Strip Mine
3 Wasteland
1 Mishra's Factory
4 Mishra's Workshop
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mana Crypt
1 Sol Ring
1 Black Lotus
1 Mana Vault
4 City of Brass
1 Coalition Relic
4 Sphere of Resistance
3 Duplicant
1 Triskelion
2 Jester's Cap
3 Seal of Cleansing
2 Powder Keg
I'll keep this post updated with the most recent established deck list.

Simon's tournament?
I might have lost to the guy who your talking about....
This deck is very good, i'd say. The maindeck Leylines are brutal.
I liked the added Void's too!
I have to say, he was lucky as hell.
is there any way to make room for darksteel colossus? also sphere vs thorn for the mb slot. wouldnt shere be better depending on the meta?
