Took my creatureless Oath deck to the rare and beloved Vintage event today, along with my girlfriend and four friends. My deck performed much better than I did, as I let it down many times throughout the day. However, it was a good day for Team Troll, with plenty of dropped jaws and a surprise Top 8 Finish for my girlfriend with Belcher.
I lose the die roll; always a good way to start against MUD (I don't know what he's on yet). I keep a hand that kills turn 1 off Moxen, Lotus, Yawgwin. No lands, just Stormy goodness. Turn 1 Chalice at 0 is effectively GG.
It's MUD; I side into GG Oath to make it a more fair matchup. Bring in Emrakuls and Blightsteels; he didn't see any cards at all game 1, so he doesn't side at all.
Game 2 I punt HARD. Maybe it was still too early and I was tired. Maybe I was nervous. Maybe I'm just a moron. Whatever the reason, I keep a turn 2 Oath hand that also coincidentally contains Demonic Tutor. I Ponder turn 1 finding a Dark Rit and some stuff. He plays a turn 1 Lodestone Golem. At this point I think, "Well, I have a Dark Rit into Demonic Tutor for Black Lotus. I can still play the turn 2 Oath and just win right here!" Then I stop short. "No, wait. He has a Lodestone Golem. I can't afford to pay 1 for Black Lotus."
3 turns later I realize my mistake as I die to Spirits and a Golem beating my face.
0-1
Round 2: vs. Belcher
I'm up against my girlfriend! Joy of joys. Since I built both of these decks from scratch myself, I know exactly what's about to happen. Game 1 I actually manage to Beast Within her Belcher. Games 2 and 3 are over pretty LotusRitRitRitWheelTwisterJar-crackYou'reDead quickly.
0-2
Round 3: vs. Control
I'm unsure of the colors besides UR, since I didn't see a lot of his deck besides Jaces and VaultKey. Game 1 is intense. I Duress him twice, taking Jace and whiffing on the second one.He digs with Top for a couple turns while I drop an Oath. BUT there's a catch; I can't win immediately if I Oath because I only have 2 mana; not enough for any one card to give me YawgWin+mana or 6 mana for PiF+Rits. My friends and I searched desperately for a two-mana win pile and never found one.
He has no threats and no real draw power outside Top digging, so I sit for two turns before drawing a Ritual. New problem: I have enough for Memory's Journey+Ritual+YawgWin, but only one source is green. I decide that his Top is digging entirely too fast with that Time Vault sitting there, and he only has 2 cards in hand anyway, so I go for it. Oath. He watches in amazement, and realizes that bad things happen to him if Journey resolves. Spin Top, hardcast Force. I can't afford a second Journey, and die on draw step. Despite killing me, he comments that my deck is terrifying and amazing, and that he doesn't expect to be so lucky games 2 and 3.
He spends a solid 10 minutes trying to sideboard, knowing and discussing out loud that he can't effectively fight both strategies at once. His fear turns out to be correct; I Duress his hand to oblivion, Ad Nauseam, and kill him without ever seeing a single Oath.
Game 3 I keep a mana-heavy hand in the hopes of finding more business. He lands a turn 1 Jace and begins the Fatesealing, leaving me high and dry until he tinkers Blightsteel AND ults Jace, to which I cast Dark Rit, Spell Pierce it, pay for Pierce, and then cast Vamp Tutor at 1 life to empty my hand and suicide.
He leaves unable to stop smiling and saying that my deck is impressive and lots of fun to play against. I'm glad he had a good time, because that's what I play for.
Round 4 - Bye
Round 5: vs. Hermit Druid
Another member of Team Troll, playing yet another of my own brews. Unfortunately, he wins the die roll and drops Turn 1 Hermits 2/3 games, and I am unable to interact at all. We have a lot of fun, though he is very frustrated at his deck. He knows it works well from practice, but he has been drawing garbage hands all day long until he played me. Our match cheers him up a bit as he finally gets there.
All in all, a fantastic day. I and my team all had a great time and returned with stories galore. We celebrated at dinner with a local friend, got to see the Atomic Empire crew, and shared as many laughs and intense Vintage games as we could squeeze into the day.
My girlfriend, after her match with me, proceeds to outrun an Oath deck on camera in a feature match. Game 1 her opponent drops Time Vault with Voltaic Key in hand, and she plays turn 1 mana into Wheel of Fortune.
Game 2 is even funnier when she does almost the same thing, except that it's a Timetwister immediately after he plays Vampiric Tutor. Her Twister hand bricks hard, though, and she has to take it to game 3.
Game 3 involves a mull to 5 for Manamorphose+Recall. Manamorphose finds Black Lotus, Recall gets Misstepped, and she just drops Belcher with 2 sources on board. The Oath player digs furiously for a win before she topdecks mana, but she patiently waits for her Stomping Ground (not Taiga) two turns later and it's all over.
It mills my entire library, at which point I flashback a Memory's Journey, targeting Yawgmoth's Will, and then draw for turn, getting that Yawgmoth's Will.
