I've been surfing and have come across a handful of tourney reports were a mono-black deck with a splash of green have placed in the top 10.
Now I used to play mono-black in the great days of magic, but somewhere I just gave up on the archtype altogether.
This has rekindled a little of that passion I used to have before about mono-black, and with hearing from a skilled player a story with regards to Oxidize {it's short and sweet} I just went with my gut on this deck I build 4 days ago. This is my version to an already placing deck!
Now everyone knows the story about Tarmogoyf {King of Kings} and how he just ends games, but the most interesting part in the is Oona's Prowler. This fairy has seen an appearance in all the decks that made the finishing places. Now I'm smart enough to see how she can be a problem in vintage, and in a format where players aren't as happy about discarding their cards.........she deals at least 6-9 a game.
Now we hit the OXY part. I was told this, "when is there not a artifact in play that Oxidize can't blast in vintage." That's a valid point, and seeing that some might call that hate I've taken in all angles on how that might just be the ticket.
I'll post more about this deck soon, and I open the floor to anyone who have idea's for improvements, and or critism.
I like the look of this, although (based on looks alone :)) it looks inferior to the BUG Fish deck that I know you play. When you get some time, can you go over some differences you've seen in match-ups between this and BUG? In your testing, has this excelled vs any archtypes that BUG has trouble with?
EDIT: I don't know if that came out right. I can see that this is definitely an improvement over straight SuiBlack, I was just saying that it looks like BUG without the U, and was wondering how it's performed.
I completely understand what you meant bud.
No this isn's bug, but it can make an opp pay via all the disruption. Oona's ability seems harmless like they can avoid her attack, but extripates make them really consider what they want to discard as the game goes on.
To be honest this build really shines against the BIG BOY decks, but against aggro/fish sideboard must come in.
Smother owns almost anything that matters, and with your own GOYFs, bobs, and Oona's the matchup isn't that bad considering as well that most fish builds play 14-16 creatures. You play your hand right and it'll be Goyf on Goyf, bob on bob, and the Oona's on ave hit for 6-9 a game once they realize that extripate is in there to punish them.
Overall I enjoyed this build, now would I play this over bug.........come D00m I think you already know that anwser, but would I add the green....without second thought if MONOSUI is your taste of choice.
BuG is just the arch/enemy to Noble`Goyf, and to be blunt nothing compares to either build.
Now oXY is probably the only part of the deck that might get critism, but ask CasLogik about a tourney he placed 2nd in.......he'll share it was do to Oxidize maindeck by his opp. Bottomline if you stay with just black then you'll probably never get the top spot finish, but if you add the green then your chances just got a whole lot better.
Oona's is played for the speed {3 damage}, and for the fact they will probably discard and pay for it do to Extripate. There's a Team in NY that build the first prototype using this theory and did very well {4 out of ??? members placed in the top ten out of 60 part}.
The loam is for that reason, so bud I can't really express how important it is, and the 2 hymns are for disruption. The Negator isn't needed {GOYFS}, but a facelift could be in order.
Have you given Dark Depths + Hexmage + Tomb of Yawgmoth a thought in this deck? Not thinking about focusing much on this combo, but as a sort of "Tinker" solution maybe. Besides, Hexmage can be used as disruption vs a good deal of staple cards in todays meta. Plus a 2/1 First striker could be useful sometimes as well considering the current creatures used in decks today.
I assume that more Duress are used instead to mitigate the lifeloss from Dark Confidant and because there aren't many worrisome targets. I would personally play 2 more Thoughtseize over the two Hymns though.

Second the Seize over Hymn - personal preferences (I think I've said this some time before as well).
To be honest, I haven't much experience with Extirpates, but I would think that 1-2 MD should be enough.
ok me and some buddies did some testing.
Now I do recommend some others test Extripate out.
I have wasted a Sea {or their VOLcanics} and hit extripate for a win.
I have duress'd a force {taking the Drains in like getting force FED with a flathead shovel} and extripated a LEG for the win.
I have extripated a ANT for the win.
I have extripated/or could almost do it to any idea you have, and there's nothing they can do about it, so in this build extripate is key {remember if they drop to the Oona they better think about it}.........give it a whirl then make your test post.
Loam was dropped for the regrowth, and the oxy is back to 3.
Any idea's on how to get it in here? I was placing the combo in here for draw results seeing the deck is pretty strong without it.
If you have a way I'm all eyes.
S.M.
I know this deck is not even the right call for this, but while thinking of ways to make hexmage/depths more available I came across Living Wish. Again probably not even close to the best card for this deck but something to think about for future hexdepth combos possibly?
The facelift isn't the version I would totally get all happy about and play a tourney with right now {needs more testing}, but it's another view.
The wish is dead in vintage, but I will say the overall combo should most surely be build around some kinda fish StocK {if you're wanting to win all the time that way}....hense if you look at this build of mine the combo isn't required for victory, but another outlet to obtain one.

if only for Tarmogoyf.........KING Of KINGS

It's very castable off Ritual/Moxens, a joy that Legacy people don't get with the Moxen.
Life from the loam seems narrow just to recur Wastelands, Why 2 Hymns? Because of Misdirections in the format?
Using Drain to fight Workshops is like using Exclude to fight Dark Confidant.
VERY CHEAP LEGACY SALE (priced to move before April 09!)
