I'm slated to judge a vintage event next week and was wondering if there are any notable card-specific interactions and rulings. I have a pretty solid grasp of the rules (as is required to be a judge), but I wanted to check in and see if there's anything that stands out or if there are any resources/articles on this particular subject to prevent getting caught off-guard with a rulings question that I can't answer.
So is there anything that anyone knows of that isn't intuitive that comes up in vintage regularly? I do play a lot of legacy so I should be good on rulings within that realm.
- Chalice never counters copied spells unless they were cast, which isn't the case with Storm or Replicate. It does counter Mind's Desire freebies.
- Chalice doesn't do much against uncounterable cards (e.g. an Ingot Chewer cast with Cavern of Souls)
- Chalice cares about CMC, not mana actually spent (hello, Ingot Chewer)
Here's a few.
Oath of Druids checks to see if the trigger is true both as it goes on the stack and on resolution to see if a player gets to oath.
The delve mechanic can be used to pay for cost increases (aka spheres). Opponents have the option to remove more cards from the grave yard to pay the cost. This is not the same as trinisphere which looks to see if someone paid at least 3 mana in order to be able to put a spell on the stack.
If a player controls two effects that trigger at the same time the owner of those effects gets to choose the order they get put on the stack, thus choosing the order they resolve. Very important for shops)
The tabernacle at Pendrell Vale does not work the way it's magus is printed. Reread it's wording if you see one.
The ability from forbidden orchard that grants tokens is a targeted ability. If the opponent of the player who controls Forbidden orchard has hexproof, they will not be able to get the orchard token.
