c Battlefield Raptor - cubable. certainly powercreeped can this bird deal with a lot of 2/1s that are still around in some cubes. it also likes to get pumped. Codespell Cleric - bad. although its a 2/2 for 1, it cant be cast on turn1 which reduces its usefulness by too much. Beskir Shieldmate -borderline. functional reprint. it still offers a virtual 2:1 in that it leaves a body, which can be interesting in certain metas Giant Ox cubable. its might look underwhelming, but 6 toughness is insane on cmc2. It blocks everything on the ground, likes to wear pump and drive cars obviously. if we ever get a 2nd one of those, i bring back Aradara Express Story Seeker bad. reprint with a worse creature type
Goldmaw Champion bad. its a little bit too late and too costly Doomskar Oracle bad. it certainly can get a lot of life, but we have quicker and more reliable ways for that. horrible statline for a defensive creature. Starnheim Courser borderline. thats an interesting effect i dont think we can get much mileage of. Axgard Braggart borderline. in order to get some consistency with my ratings id have to go with bad because its only a 3/3 for 4, but it can grow. its still weak to bolts. Stalwart Valkyrie borderline. i dont like it too much. unless you build around the effect, so it comes down T2, its too fragile imo. Master Skald cubable. decent stats in white and easy 2:1 Gods' Hall Guardian bad. i kinda like it, but lets be honest, its worse than both the cyclers we have. Lots of undercosted stats arent the same in todays meta.
nc Wings of the Cosmos cubable. i think thats a very sold combat trick, If i were to run those. Valor of the Worthy bad. there is too much competition for cmc1 auras and this one doesnt grant keywords. Revitalize bad. reprint. Bound in Gold cubable. I assume its still cubable, although we got many better ones. Invoke the Divine bad. as a pure sb card its uninteresting in the first place and you will feel really bad if you need the life and dont have a target. Iron Verdict bad. white synergizes better with enchantment based removal and this one even kills only tapped ones with toughness <=5 Warhorn Blastbad. i fail to see how this is better than the other masspumps we already got.
I don't like Battlefield Raptor. It sure is a great target for equipments and other pump, but on it's own the 1/2 flier doesn't really do all that much and being able to stall 2/1s is not a great main resaon to play a card. Borderline IMO.
That the person, who promoted Ajani's Sunstrider would call a strictly better version bad surprises me. Story Seeker is a functional reprint and the creature type doesn't matter much it's just as cubeable as Bishop's Soldier and Mesa Unicorn.
How is it easy to get a 2:1 out of Master Skald? Personally I don't have many enchantments or artifacts that go into the grave on their own and even when I had more auras I also had more hexproof creatures, which were pretty hard to deal with once you got the that point. In a Kaldheim draft I also had the situation where I had this in my deck and an enchantment to return, but no creature´in grave. I don't think this can ever be better than borderline.
In the context of whites alternatives Wings of the Cosmos can be rated as borderline, IMO.
i dont care too much about the birb, but arent u the guy that always falls back to Welkin Terns? I think its as much you can ask for a onedrop.
ajani is years ago, when lowcost aggro was mainly green. against red those 2/2s are pretty mediocre, because they just get burned away, so you never get lifegain out of them. Soldiers still have more synergies than the other creature types, if only for war falcon
you dont compare limited games to cube games, dont you? a 4/4 in white is already playable and being able to bring back a dead pacifism or Ethereal Armor is def pretty easy, considering bounce and blink deals with them without effort.
what cmc1 combat tricks does white offer that are much better? i dont like combat tricks in general, so i can go with borderline. although it looks like a almost better smite, which is awesome
1 or 2 power makes all the difference. 2 power in the air is always a relevant clock, while 1 power doesn't archive much on it's own. In a vacuum Goblin Piker is way way better than Norwood Ranger. The bird really is more of a build around card, that screams pump me. I think the cards should be evaluated mostly in a vacuum without taking into consideration all the possible secondary cards, that could make them work.
I think the 1W lifelink 2/2s are very decent. Against a red deck, where is the difference between a 2/2 lifelink and Standard Bearer? Booth of them will very likely require a burnspell. The 2/2 lifelink can participate in combat and really make difference if that doesn't happen immediatly, while the Bearer just sits around and has to watch you getting beaten down by creatures.
My question is, how does Pacifism end up in the grave? Especially on purpose? I don't want a card that depends on you having a pacifism, your opponent than having a Disenchant or sac effect and all of that in the best case before turn 5 so you can play your guy on curve. Oh and yeah a creature of yours also needs to have died in the meantime. With my example I mostly wanted to point out, that an enchantment heavy deck isn't guaranteed to have a creature in your grave when you need it. If you were always able to guarantee a creature in the grave Stitched Drake would be utterly insane.
If your cube puts a lot of pump auras on non-hexproof creatures than this scenario is of course a lot more realistic, but I don't think the average cube has enough pump auras to make this work. Again too many very specific secondary cards necessary.
what i wanted to point to, is that the birb perfectly deals with the tern nonsense. on its own. its silly to try to rate cards in a vaccuum, because they are always have to be seen in the environment of the hypothetical average pauper cube. it beats like 77 creatures in your cube. even a 1/1 fly first strike is already kinda fine, but this one offers the crucial 2 toughness to dodge all the ping effects. flying 2/1s for 1 are extremely limited and come with more or less hefty downsides, so i really dont know what we are arguing here. raptor is one of the best onedrops. and a onedrops purpose isnt a quick finisher, but to soften the enemys life early on. if lightning bolt is the metric here, it needs to deal 4 dmg to trump it.
mind you its cubable not staple.
the bearers role is to protect your threats from being sniped, not to protect your face being melted, although it sometimes can do that, too. Otoh I dont think a standard bear, without immediate effect has a place in todays meta. and the lifegain spot is already taken by lone missionary and not the bearer.
as i mentioned, pacifism tends to end in the grave all the time. blue bounces or blinks, red and black sacrifice and green destroys it. sometimes it even gets countered or discarded. yeah you can end in a situation where it doesnt grant a recursion, but i repeat myself. a 4/4 for 5 is completely fine in white.
not really. white is lacking anything beefy. with only wheenies you can only do so much, then in the lategame you will face an army of 3/3s 3/4s and 4/4s you can no longer attack into (unless evasion on your onedrops ;))
so, while i wouldnt run a vanilla 4/4 for 5 in other colors, its fine for me in white. although i also run Conclave Naturalists, which is kinda the mirror card. its not like you are forced to play them on curve.
also there is only a very limited pool of big creatures in white anyway.
Brinebarrow Intruder cubable. not much competition in blues onedrop category and this is a reasonable combat trick on a stick. Karfell Harbingerbad. mana elveszombies for 2 arent that great. run signets Pilfering Hawkbad. snow is already very specific and paying for a loot isnt too great. Draugr Thought-Thiefborderline. weird effect on a bad statline. might have room in some gy shenenigan pile. Mistwalkerbad. if the pump was U only, itd be a great card. as is its more of a wall than anything else. Augury Ravenborderline. 3/3 for 4, meh. Even flying doesnt help much. And foretell seems just lame. Frostpeak Yetibad. 3/3 for 4, meh. could be semi interesting if it was perma unblockable. Littjara Kinseekersbad. i doubt that blue ever has 2 other creatures. that on top share also a creature type. even if, it doesnt seem too great. Undersea Invaderbad. Havenwood Wurm was already way too clunky and this thing doesnt even offer the hypothetical combat surprise the Wurm never pulled off.
nc Annul reprint Bind the Monster cubable. im still not in love with this thing, since the lifeloss hurts, but its good enough to be cubable. Depart the Realmbad. boomerang isnt a great card and this one doesnt even bounce lands. Disdainful Strokereprint Mists of Littjara bad. i dont think flash justifies the additional 1 over sensory deprivation Strategic Planningreprint Ravenformbad. i think it could become borderline if your blue has problems with artifacts. Behold the Multiverseborderline. upon closer inspection, this seems worse than Witching Well Run Ashorebad. we dont have time for such costly effects.
why do i think 3/3s for 4 are bad while 4/4s for 5 are reasonable? well 3/3s deal 20 in 7 turns and 4/4s in 5. also a lot of removal is toughness based and deals only 3. they also trade with a lot of 2drops.
Brinebarrow Intruder is no better than borderline, IMO. Sure blue doesn't have great onedrop alternatives, but does it need onedrops? The Intruder is at it's best at killing attacking 2/1s. I don't think this type of bad Ambusch Viper, that can only kill small creatures is at all necessary in blue.
Draugr Thought-Thief is bad. The body is bad and for gy shenaningans you would simply use something like Armored Skaab, which fills the gy 4 times as much.
Behold the Multiverse is definitely cubeable. Blue control decks sometimes don't have an active play on turn 2 and the whole effect at instant is just very good.
