I'm trying to convert my 720 card, rare, unpowered cube into a "mostly peasant cube." In doing so I find myself mainly cutting the Baneslayers and Sun Titans of the world - leaving a major need for good 5, 6, and 7 drop creatures (in every color really, but in white for the purposes of this discussion).
What are some good options for these slots?
At the moment I'd say Cloudgoat Ranger is a shoe-in, and I'm seriously considering Sentinel of the Eternal Watch. Beyond that I'm kind of at a loss and am halfway considering using some lower-powered rares like Arbiter of Knollridge, Geist-Honored Monk, and Reveillark to fill what appears to be a total void at the peasant level. Am I missing some obvious choices, or is this really the case?
Yeah, in terms of high-end creatures, white has it particularly bad. Custodi Squire and Serra Angel are worthwhile considerations and I think the jury is still out on Valiant Changeling. Feudkiller's Verdict sees play, too, but that is about it. Then again, in Peasant, bigger plays tend to be more limited in the first place and the focus is more on solid cards in the early and mid-game.
The ones I play: Cloudgoat Ranger
The best one. One of the bombs in my 360 peasant cube. Custodi Squire
Solid card. Elite Scaleguard
It's very good if you support +1/+1 counter theme but even without a solid aggro curve topper. Feudkiller's Verdict
This card has won a lot of games and it's great in races against aggro decks. Sentinel of the Eternal Watch
I would also consider this a bomb.
Solid ones I don't play: Serra Angel
Very solid. No space in my 360 cube, but would play it in 450 or larger. Radiant, Archangel
Interesting version of Serra Angel. Depends on your cube if you want to run this. I would probably do so in 520 or larger.
Other options in 720 (one or two of these would be ok in a 720 cube): Belfry Spirit (lots of bodies for 1 card) Syr Alin, the Lion's Claw (Not tried, but might be good enough?) Council Guardian (always has protection form the color of your choice in 1vs1) Urbis Protector (if you have a blink archetype)
You may find this list helpful. It's a list I put together from polling 30 peasant cube lists around the forums here to get an "average" list based on preferences of MTGS posters. Thirty is an obviously small sample size, but given that this is probably the best source for peasant cube discussion, I really trust the results gotten from the cubes around here.
For 6+ drops, there's really not much that's viable outside of Sentinel. Most of your big white finishers at peasant are going to be at the five drop range and will probably resemble a Serra Angel, even if it's over a few bodies (like Cloudgoat, for instance).
If you're looking for options at peasant+ that are solid, but aren't Baneslayers, I would recommend Angel of Sanctions, which slots into pretty much any white deck outside of dedicated aggro. If you're running a decent amount of planeswalkers still, you could look at Thalia's Lancers. For six drops, you have a few options once you start including rares, but my non-Titan six of choice is Yosei, the Morning Star.
Here is my "low power" list that started out as peasant plus pain lands, moved to peasant plus, and ultimately has ended up where is now, which is more of a legacy light power level.
My peasant cube runs Cloudgoat Ranger, which is popular, and Goldnight Redeemer, which is not. My cube has a stronger emphasis on ETBs and flickering them, though, and it's worked out well so far.
Yeah Cloudgoat ranger is great as a five. Custodi squire is solid, not amazing but definitely playable. I am a big fan of Elite Scaleguard, with other +1/+1 support he is amazing. Even without other support he is still great as a curve topper. Think of him as though he had haste because usually he is pumping up another creature you already have in play.
Sentinel of the Eternal Watch is also excellent. Definitely one of the best top end cards in peasant and can pretty much lock down the game on it's own. However, it is very easy to splash for her so the white deck may not always end up playing her.
I found I really like Serra Angel, there is a reason she is a classic.
She kind of under drafted but the deck she is best in is kind of a rare draft (UW control).
Still when you fail to solidify an archetype and end up "good stuff" she is the kind of raw power you need to make that kind of thing work.
Thanks for all the input everyone. I like the look of Syr Alin, the Lion's Claw and had never heard of or considered Elite Scaleguard, but I definitely see the value of it for both counters and Blink synergies. Here's to Wizards printing some more good options at peasant in this space (or downshifting a few more lower powered rares like they did with Feudkiller's Verdict).
In addition to the other options mentioned (Cloudgoat, Custodi Squire, Sentinel, Verdict, Scaleguard), I run Patron of the Valiant as my Serra-like card as a little extra support for +1/+1 counter synergies.
