Plus, instant speed mana sinks are important to more counterspell-oriented decks in my opinion. The Pirate Spirit having flash makes it a play you can make if you do not need your counterspell on an early turn and its effect allows you to refresh whenever you keep counter mana up as a bluff or on a turn without anything worth countering.
There aren't even remotely enough green token makers in my cube to consider Woodland Champion. I assume in a GW midrange token deck it would be a decent addition, but that's not good enough for a mono color card.
Spectral Sailor is hard to evaluate. I just don't see many decks where I would really want to play this, but I've never considered Azure Mage either. I like all the other recent flying one drop additions in blue more (Siren Stormtamer, Pteramander, Faerie Seer) so I most likely won't add it.
Winged Words is a pretty good draw spell. I like Chart a Course a bit more and I don't need another, similar spell. But for larger cubes this would be a decent card to play.
Late game doesn't suddenly mean x/2s no longer exist. And if you need to trade early that's something Sailor just can't do reliably, which is easily game losing.
Being mediocre at all points of the game isn't good in aggro. And blue one drops don't even have a past t1 issue to begin with. Siren Stormtamer's ability gets more relevant later, Pteramander is a must remove threat later, Enclave Cryptologist, and Faerie Seer's scry gets better late. Even Cloudfin Raptor is good late if you have a decently sized hand.
Flash on a 1 drop just isn't that impactful. It isn't exactly going to be sitting in your hand.
Decks that can use Azure Mage ability well want a better blocker. Decks that want a 1/1 flyer don't really want the Azure Mage ability. Is the card people really want just the Azure Mage ability on an enchantment for 1? Cause otherwise I still don't see it.
Winged Words is a pretty good draw spell. I like Chart a Course a bit more and I don't need another, similar spell. But for larger cubes this would be a decent card to play.
I prefer an unconditional and cheap draw spell rather than a sometimes cheaper one. I support flyers, but I'd play always Chart a Course over Winged Words, because I prefer to have good cards for every deck I build. This new Divination variant is a good signal for your drafters, but Chart a Course being always cheaper will be my best choice. Chart even enables cemetery strategies.
IMO, Winged Words is nice for Pauper Cubes or big Peasant cubes.
On Spectral Sailor: I think I'll be running it, but I'm also still running Phantasmal Bear, and that only sees (marginal) play in blue-based aggro decks. However, most of my blue aggro decks no longer care for the bear. They want either flyers or creatures that provide value lategame. I think this is a pretty good insurance policy late. My skies decks tend to operate at instant speed (Midnight Haunting and Thunderclap Wyvern), and this supports that. It's also pretty good in a counterspell shell for control, and I foresee it having nice synergy with Wilderness Reclamation.
Tomebound Lich this seems similar to Shadowmage Infiltrator. I am leaning towards the Lich, however, because I feel Fear is pretty easily blockable (I run a high amount of manafix, so splashing is easy and black is often splashed into), and I think looting provides more interesting decisions, and also potential upside in reanimator, a deck my drafters enjoy very much. Being a deathtoucher means it can also serve as a good blocker, and the lifegain is helpful, too, with all the lifeloss going on in black.
Spectral Sailor is super interesting to me, because I think there is more and more competition between blue's creatures and blue's spells. I thought about this a lot with Faerie Seer and Watcher for Tomorrow compared to Preordain and Impulse. Faerie Seer essentially swaps out drawing a card for being a 1/1 flier (plus other capabilities based on card type). Do most people think that drawing a card is better than getting the 1/1 flier? In that case, how does Cloudkin Seer compare to Aven Eternal?
I think I will eventually add one of these new creatures at the cost of my weakest cheap card draw spell (which is probably Brainstorm).
I'm in love with Audacious Thief. Great pushed common and I think this is cubable.
Tomebound Lich could find a olace in my Dimir Section to help UB Reanimator decks.
Blood for Bones... I'm not sure if I want this. Seems decent but I hate addional costs. I would like to do this play: cast this card sacrificing Archaeomancer or Eternal Witness to bring any of them back to your hand and an eldrazi to the battlefield. Then recast Archaeomancer or Ewitt to recover the spell and repeat when you need it. Looks nice.
Blood for Bones seems really strong despite the sac a creature cost, its kind of really good for the value reanimator deck rather than cheating things into play.
Black is getting so many great cards this set I am going to have do a reexamination of my black section I think.

Do you need two targets to cast Blood for Bones? If you don't, could be better than Victimize. Less setup.
Can you bring back the creature you sacrifice?
You don't need two targets (you actually don't need targets at all since the spell doesn't target) and yes, you can bring back the sacrificed creature.
In a normal situation Victimize is way better though as you get 2x Zombify for 3 mana instead of 1x Zombify and 1x Raise Dead for 4 mana. There are corner cases where Blood for Bones will be better, but even though I love reanimaton spells I won't play this.
Skyknight Vanguard - finally a staple Boros card for those not running online only uncommons?
I am also loving the new equipments, including the hilarious Colossus Hammer, even if making it viable in our format would likely take too much. Then again, the living weapon variants like Ancestral Blade make me reconsider adding more devoted equipment archetype stuff like that legendary red 3-drop which generates elementals for each attached aura and enchantment. Earlier, supporting it was too much but there would help since they are not dead plays on an empty board.
Skyknight Vanguard is actually making me reconsider Goblin Oriflamme. Normally, I'd love Vanguard with aristocrats/death triggers, but those are all in black and I normally only go two color in draft. Oriflamme pumps the tokens up enough to make a difference. I might have to add both.
I dont know if the vanguard is consistent enough without help. I dont have a good way to calculate how frequently you can get those tokens through to accumulate a few. I would want an average of 1.5 or 1.6 to make the card worth it, I think.
ancestral blade: bear that leaves behind equipment is a good rate. i dig it.
brineborn cutthroat: looks decent in a tempo style deck, and even if you only get one counter on it i think it's a good card.
cloudkin seer: good rate, if unexciting. 1 toughness will be the death of this though.
spectral sailor: this is probably the best flying man we have. it is still a flying man.
audacious thief: interesting riff on phyrexian rager but i don't think this gets there as a grey ogre that has to attack.
blood for bones: good value reanimate spell, more along the lines of diabolic servitude than anything else. not sure if i have room for two of this effect though.
bloodthirsty aerialist: on a good enough base body, this is one to consider if you support the old b/w lifegain deck.
disfigure: i've been feeling like i should be running this for some time now. maybe i should.
gorging vulture: decent card to fill your graveyard, and on a wind drake is nice.
chandra, novice pyromancer: i might just run this. i wish i had friends to test with haha.
scampering scorcher: basically hordeling outburst, trading a mana and haste for splashability and flicker synergy seems reasonable. seems like a good one.
howling giant: not a bad top end. ramp targets with split bodies are pretty great, but i don't think this is better than any current options. woodland champion: this is great in basically any colour combination with green, so i'm gunna dunk it.
empyrean eagle: yeah i think i like this over thunderclap wyvern. just so efficient.
skyknight vanguard: if the token didn't have to attack i'd like this a hell of a lot more than i do.
cryptic caves: definitely running this. our very own horizon canopy.
pretty ok with this set after getting so many goodies in the last two.
Hello all! Welcome to my patented Way Too Early Top 20 for Magic 2020. I like making these lists early to get a feel for where I think the power is for a set. I hope this is not the last top 20 I create for Peasant cards on this forum, but we will see.
Let me start by saying this set feels a bit underpowered, and I would not guarantee any of these cards lasting long-term.
20) Barkhide Troll- Green two-drops have been so good lately that even a 3/3 with upside for GG feels meh.
19) Angel of Vitality, 18) Twinblade Paladin, and 17) Bloodthirsty Aerialist- I have nowhere near enough support for these cards, but there has been a lot of support for this archetype recently (including Gideon's Company from a WAR Planeswalker deck). I could see someone giving these an honest shot one day.
16) Lightning Stormkin, 15) Corpse Knight, 14) Skyknight Vanguard, and 13) Tomebound Lich- A good list of 2nd and 3rd tier Guild options depending on where your Guild is focused. I like Tomebound Lich but think that saboteur ability is a bit worse than Shadowmage.
12) Woodland Champion- I was ready to dismiss this card until I realized a) it triggers on ALL tokens, not just creature tokens and b) a lot of cards make multiple tokens at once, even though a lot of those are not in green. Any two-drop that can easily become 4/4 is worth thinking about.
11) Chandra, Novice Pyromancer- I have not yet tried any planeswalkers in Cube, but this having a plus ability seems awesome.
10) Blood for Bones- I like this card, but worry that the Raise Dead will not always be worth sacrificing a creature plus the personal graveyard restriction.
9) Audacious Thief- Plenty of upside if you get two good attacks in, but it is also very easy to have no good attacks.
Some More Interesting Cards
8) Spectral Sailor, 7) Brineborn Cutthroat, and 6) Cloudkin Seer- I like all of these cards quite a bit, but heck if I could tell you where they rank next to other recent blue one-, two-, and three-drops.
5) Ancestral Blade- I like a 2/2 for two that leaves a Leonin Scimitar but worry each part is underpowered.
4) Howling Giant- When this was mentioned as a mono-green Trostani's Summoner, my interest was piqued. I had a lot of green ramp decks that splashed for Summoner and now I can keep this in green.
3) Ironroot Warlord- Even a 2/5 for 1GW is a decent return and this can have much higher power and can pump out random creatures either late game or as a combat trick.
2) Empyrean Eagle- Between this and Thundercloud Wyvern, I would rather my anthem effect was cheaper at the expense of flash.
1) Cryptic Caves- Even though I will play this, I think being a colorless land definitely hurts in some decks. Of course, playing it as an 18th land is definitely a viable option.
It will be interesting to see how often Audacious Thief draws more cards than Phyrexian Rager. I'm not super high on it but we'll see how it does in M20 limited.
My thoughts: Woodland Champion
I like the card but this probably plays as a Selesnya card more than a green card and that might make it akward. However after thinking about it I have other cards like that (although to a lesser extent) like Thermo-Alchemist which is essentially an Izzet card. I think I will try and find a spot for Woodland Champion.
Cryptic Caves
This seems solid and a good include. It's just so generic that it's hard to find something to cut (that is probably worse but more interesting).
Brineborn Cutthroat
The card on its' own seems fine but I can't think of a deck that wants this card.
Cloudkin Seer
Solid but not exciting. It does do both blink and skies so I think I'll try this.
Tomebound Lich
I only have two cards per guild and this card is maybe top 5 at best.
Audacious Thief
When comparing this to Phyrexian Rager (which I am no longer running) this seems mediocre but when comparing this to Jhessian Thief it seems fine. I'll probably order a copy so if I hear other people mention it later I have one to try.
Ancestral Blade
A bear is bad, Leonin Scimitar is bad. Combining them makes for a mediocre card. I might have tried this if my cube was 540 or bigger but at 360 this doesn't make the cut imho.
Skyknight Vanguard
Ironically, this would probably be better if the tokens didn't enter the battlefield attacking. As is, I can see people running this in guild section of maybe 5 or bigger. Boros is a weak guild...
Savage Gorger
Haven't seen this card mentioned at all but I think it has potential. In the right deck (rakdos) this can attack as a 3/3 flying in turn four and it will keep growing. Although it's probably too inconsistent.
Not very impressed with this set (for my cube at least).
Audacious Thief - Considering the test, but I don't think it will be worth it. Barkhide Troll - I like that its a 3/3 for 2 (although GG is tough), comes in with a counter which is useful as G/W is my counters matter guild, and can protect itself... just doesn't seem good enough Blood for Bones - I kinda like this as a value reanimate spell, but don't think I want a second conditional reanimate spell where you need to sacrifice a creature Brineborn Cutthroat - Won't make the cut, but picked it up anyway... Chandra, Novice Pyromancer - Uptick uncommon PW with two decent down tick options.. thanks wizards Cloudkin Seer - Probably play it if I can find a cut Corpse Knight - Won't make the cut, but picked it up anyway... Diamond Knight - Likely Won't make the cut, but picked it up anyway... Gorging Vulture - Likely Won't make the cut, but picked it up anyway... Howling Giant - Need to find a cut for this, I cut trostani recently because it didnt fit in my guild section, but I like this for monogreen ramp and reanimate Skyknight Vanguard - Easily in for me Tomebound Lich - In for me, it feels weird running next to shadowmage, may run both or cut shadowmage for this... this works much better for my guild section as it discards as well Vampire of the Dire Moon - Not sure if it will make it in or not, probably not good enough but i like it Cryptic Caves - Probably adding, but lands are so bad in peasant cubes already that another colorless option isn't what I am most excited about
Savage Gorger

I don't think that it can attack as a 3/3 on t4 since it only gets a counter on your end step. You can basically "bloodthirst" it to 2/2 the turn you play it and then it (hopefully) gets progressively bigger each turn after that.

Empyrean Eagle
I think there is finally enough good suppport for WU skies. Might also find a place for Favorable Winds and Radiant, Archangel.
Ironroot Warlord
I like it. With one other creature on the battlefield it's already reasonable.
Chandra, Novice Pyromancer
I still think she is worth testing although seeing her compared to Tibalt, Rakish Instigator which I haven't tried I feel like I should give him a go first.
Cloudkin Seer
Solid but not exciting. It does do both blink and skies so I think I'll try this.

Howling Giant
Someone mentioned our other options are better. But after looking at all the 7+ drops in green. I would rank them somewhat like this:
1. Pelakka Wurm
2. Plated Crusher
3. Roar of the Wurm/Howling Giant (depending on your cube and preferences)
5. Sifter Wurm
6. Greater Sandwurm
7. Penumbra Wurm
I think I'll give the giant a try instead of Roar of the Wurm or I might just cut Breaker of Armies for Cryptic Caves and add a fourth 7+ drop to green.
My C/Ube on Cube Cobra
Audacious Thief - Considering the test, but I don't think it will be worth it.
Barkhide Troll - I like that its a 3/3 for 2 (although GG is tough), comes in with a counter which is useful as G/W is my counters matter guild, and can protect itself... just doesn't seem good enough
Blood for Bones - I kinda like this as a value reanimate spell, but don't think I want a second conditional reanimate spell where you need to sacrifice a creature
Brineborn Cutthroat - Won't make the cut, but picked it up anyway...
Chandra, Novice Pyromancer - Uptick uncommon PW with two decent down tick options.. thanks wizards
Cloudkin Seer - Probably play it if I can find a cut
Corpse Knight - Won't make the cut, but picked it up anyway...
Diamond Knight - Likely Won't make the cut, but picked it up anyway...
Gorging Vulture - Likely Won't make the cut, but picked it up anyway...
Howling Giant - Need to find a cut for this, I cut trostani recently because it didnt fit in my guild section, but I like this for monogreen ramp and reanimate
Skyknight Vanguard - Easily in for me
Tomebound Lich - In for me, it feels weird running next to shadowmage, may run both or cut shadowmage for this... this works much better for my guild section as it discards as well
Vampire of the Dire Moon - Not sure if it will make it in or not, probably not good enough but i like it
Cryptic Caves - Probably adding, but lands are so bad in peasant cubes already that another colorless option isn't what I am most excited about
So in the end, only cards I am really excited about are:
Tomebound Lich
Skyknight Vanguard
Howling Giant
Chandra, Novice Pyromancer
Everything else seems pretty meh
I don't think that it can attack as a 3/3 on t4 since it only gets a counter on your end step. You can basically "bloodthirst" it to 2/2 the turn you play it and then it (hopefully) gets progressively bigger each turn after that.
Spectral Sailor - Replacing Azure Mage to better support flyers and control decks.
Empyrean Eagle - Replacing Thunderclap Wyvern to reduce cmc.
Tomebound Lich - Replacing Dimir Guildmage, which I've never been happy with.
Considering:
Corpse Knight
Cryptic Caves
Skyknight Vanguard
