I feel the Famished Paladin Combo isnt worth, it. As Guitarspider said the Midnight Guardian and presence combo is strong but even those I stopped running do to sacrificing a spot to a less than great card that required 2 colors to pull off.
The Famished combo while in all one color, without a soulsister package and ajani's pridemate in the cube I feel is too weak.
Unrelated side note: I just realized that I had an unintentional combo in my cube that got abused last draft. Temur Sabertooth + Burning-tree emissary leads to infinite ETBs and Cast triggers for 5 other wincon ways in my cube... oops
I really need more -1/-1 counters in my cube to use Vizier but its certainly a strong combo...
I mean I think it would be kind of amusing if GW was just all combo, certainly gives it a flavour, you'd have to have lots of tutors and green filtering. I think you could do it just you wouldn't allow gw to do much else with all these janky cards.
Thinking about it, Famished Paladin could be barely ok if you assume it has the text "defender" or you have something like 4-6 lifegain/lifelink cards. That means it's basically a WB card though, which is not great. It's certainly no Lambholt Pacifist.
If you want a mana sink I'd recommend Centaur Glade over Spineback. You've got a real chance to get two tokens per turn out of Glade in green, getting two out of spineback will be much harder. Glade is also harder to remove, more reliable.
I think one of the most interesting things about this set is that Peasant got so many of the best Cube cards from Rivals. You can see that in the discussion generated among the normal cubers and we even got 4 of the top 7 slots in wtwlf123's Top 20 list in the "Articles, Podcasts, and Guides" section of the Cube forums.
If the black “2/1” is not really needed at Peasant, I’m not sure what chance is stands when people can play Grabecrawer or Dread Wanderer or the raid guy from Khans
On that list, he put it into the same tier as Gnarled Scarhide, Tormented Hero, and Vampire Lacerator. For them, I think that is their 7th to 10th best black one drops. For us, that is our top 6 black one drops, which is good enough for me. I could see arguments for Grasping Scoundrel being better than Tormented Hero, so that puts it into top 5.
I am not sure at which point people want 5 aggro black one drops, but I will play 6 at 512 cards.
When people complain how bad a set has been I'm usually flabbergasted because there are always so many cards to try, even if they don't make it in the end. Not this time though. We got... six cards? Seven cards? And that's being generous.
My update is looking to have around 9, but that's mostly because I want to see if I can support life gain matters and vampires. Other than that.. only (slight) upgrades to cards/effects we already run. Even the best card is still 'just another' Nekrataal we could have done without.
I'm really hoping Oathsworn Vampire works out. If it does, I'll call the set a win, but otherwise it's a big 'meh' from me as well.
Ive also been looking at this as an archetype as it offers a cool midrange orzhov deck. I currently have a aristocrats archetype here but i'm considering lifegain now as it offers a cool different style.

Between this set's vampires, extort, and plenty of other BW cards available, I'd say you have a pretty fair shot at this working out. I'm eager to hear how it turns out.

I'm curious to see how your update works out Squirrely, would you mind listing what cards you think are necessary to make these two archetypes work?
In my preliminary looks at the archetype for both: Cliffhaven Vampire seemed like a strong signal card for either archetype (edging toward Lifegain but works in vamps) however for straight power level Death Grasp is a stronger Lifegain signal.
I found Drana's Emissary to be a solid support for the life gain matters cards. Happens every turn without further investment. I was running that and Cliffhaven Vampire as gold cards when I was actively supporting the archetype.
If you mean play Tithe Drinker over Drana's Emissary, I think I'd prefer Emissary. Evasion plus it always triggers on a board stall seems worth it. Tithe Drinker can sometimes get multiple life gain triggers per cycle, but the lack of evasion means it can't chip in sometimes, and it requires mana for the extort. I don't think the gap is huge though, and maybe I'm just wrong and they are on par.
Huh, I don't think it's particularly close. Evasion, better body, automatic trigger,... how often do you get to use extort more than once per turn? Multiple lifegain triggers from Tithe Drinker aren't likely to happen unless you can clear the board. Any sort of combat action and it'll be dead. Plus Emissary could easily end up in other decks as well, I feel like Tithe Drinker is more of a stretch in that regard.
Both cards are pretty bad on their own. I like pursuing these types of synergies, but the Paladin seems like it needs some extra text somewhere.

I tried midnight guard + presence of gond in an early version of my cube but both cards were too weak on their own.
