I agree that Control Magic is the 'right' first pick in a lot of packs, and that staying open is unnecessary in a format (cube) where finding enough good cards for your deck is usually not an issue.
That said, we (my playgroup) tend to pick all kinds of (blue) cards over Control Magic. I personally prefer to draft powerful/fun archetype cards early and 'just' powerful cards later. In my mind, Control Magic is staying open.
I mean you have stuff like Skullclamp/Library/Warhammer/Mana Drain that most lists don't, but looking at the rest of your 360 list I still can't fathom being unhappy to take a P1P1 Control Magic nearly every time it shows up.
Feel free to be like "eh whatever, drop it"... but it's just such a surprising card evaluation from a person who's a community staple. It's like BrownDog dropping a little side comment about how Fireball is better than Lightning Bolt or something
Staying open is a thing, but as others have mentioned it's more important to not stay committed to that first pick than it is to stay open with that first pick. Ben Stark has written and said a lot of great things about first picks vs the rest of your draft, and I find that he's right when he says you should really take the most powerful card you can p1p1 as long as you are ready to go in another direction completely if it presents itself.
Orzhov Advokist did well in draft today. Opponents never really wanted to get counters, and T2 suspend Infiltrator Il-Kor into T3 Advokist is a winning combination, swinging for 5 unblockable damage. Really great card. Migratory Route did pretty well, too, serving as block fodder and a hefty 4 flying power when going on the offense. Solid, as expected.
Eh. I wouldn't call it insane, nor would i call it INSANE.
Here is a short excerpt from my _i0 - English dictionary:
wayyyyyy worse - slightly worse
INSANE - good
huuuuuuuuge - decent
REALLLLLY - really
unplayable trash - almost good enough
PURE GARBAGE I HATE SO MUCH I WOULDN'T CUBE WITH IT EVEN IF SOMEONE THREATENED TO KILL ME IF I DON'T - not good enough
Hope that helps. But yeah, Migratory Route is a good card, it would be one of two cards I'd play in a 2 slot Azorius guild section (the other one being Reflector Mage). The cycling makes it versatile, it supports skies and token decks and it has a very good overall power level.
