I never really saw the point of Wave of Indifference. More often than not it's a more expensive Panic Attack.
Presence of Gond is a heavier investment than Gilt-Leaf Ambush, as it requires you to give up a potentially better creature every turn to pump out 1/1s. It becomes much better when you also pick up stuff like Freed from the Real, Horseshoe Crab or Quirion Ranger.
I was looking at beefing up the higher end of creatures in my common cube. Which of the ones below would you consider cubeable?
I guess I should have provided an explanation of why I was looking at these cards.
Cinderhaze Wretch: Last I checked, repeatablediscardisarareeffect. There's a bit of trickledown effect with stuff like Abyssal Specter and Headhunter at uncommon, but really the only other discard on a stick at common is Wall of Distortion and Cat Burglar (EDIT: And Okiba-Gang Shinobi, of course. Probably the best of the commons). Am I overvaluing the power of repeatable discard or something? A retraced Raven's Crime can rip the opponent's hand apart after a few turns, so I'm not sure why you wouldn't want a creature attached to it.
I'm mainly considering Daunting Defender because of the slight bonus he gives to other clerics and changelings, of which there can be a handful in common cubes (Martyr of Sands, Order of Leitbur, Soul Warden, Temple Acolyte, Hallowed Healer, Soltari Visionary and Zealous Inquisitor all make the cut in my cube). I don't know if he compares favorably to Siege Mastodon though.
Glintwing Invoker: he's a mana-sink for pseudo-control decks. Last I checked, blue doesn't get fatties at common either, unless they have a reallyold, reallybadmechanic. The flying and pump would help break drawn-out creature stalemates, I'm pretty sure.
Rootwalla: Hungry Spriggan and Battlewand Oak both have more conditional pump triggers than Rootwalla, and they're still part and parcel of common cubes.
I'd really like to hear what people would consider better cards in these slots.
Gilt-Leaf Ambush has to be in IMO. Green has plenty of spell space, and it's a really good combat trick.
Cinderhaze Wretch Isn't worth it imo. He can only mill stuff on turn 6, and by that time there won't be much left to mill. Sure he can rip apart a few control archetypes, but he's just not good enough to edge out other solid black 5-drops. I'd rather run something like Mournwhelk, as it at least does something every time you use it.
Glintwing Invoker is a decent choice, but if you're balancing your creature count at all, blue doesn't have many creature spaces to go around. If you want fatties, Shoal Serpent is actually pretty good. Slipstream Serpent is also decent, as you can pretty reliably surprise block, and can almost always get 5 in if you need to. But still, I don't think blue should run many more creatures over 4 mana, and blue should be more than half spells.
Here's some cards that I run in my cube that have been pleasantly surprising, and worth trying if you have space:
So, no posts in this thread for a while now, is noone common cubing right now?
I must say, the more and more I play with mine, the more funny it gets and I just love it. Unfortunately my playgroup isn´t that much interested, so that we are 4-7 people just on mondays, because fridays there are only the usual fnm formats. But it still kicks ass, and I don´t know if there would be any format (or even deck) I like more than my cube at the moment.
My last changes are
Wave of Indifference -> Searing Blaze
because wave never saw play and Searing Blaze is broken, not just in ZZW draft.
Gilt-Leaf Ambush -> Presence of Gond
This is for testing, I want to see which 3-mana token producer is better.
Thoughts? (unfortunately I haven´t changed it yet in my cbe thread)
Searing Blaze is ridiculous, just be careful not to overdo it on the burn. I set a hard limit on the number of burn spells in my cube. It means I have to cut removal to add removal, which is tough, but it's better than having too much removal in the cube messing up the enviornment. If you just want to upgrade wave of indifference to a similar spell, I'd suggest ember gale.
I think presense of gond is pretty good, and if you put it on a cheap dork then it can obviously mitigate the damage when they kill the creature it's on. I don't think it would last long enough in most cases to really take over the game, but it has that potential so I'd say give it a try. In it's old draft format it was really only good when you could combo with it though.
I was looking at beefing up the higher end of creatures in my common cube. Which of the ones below would you consider cubeable?
Lymph Sliver / Daunting Defender
Glintwing Invoker
Rootwalla
Cinderhaze Wretch
Daunting defender is fine if you are really heavy on the clerics, but I would not say it's that powerful on it's own or even if it has synergy with 1-2 creatues in the deck it's in. Same with the sliver.
Glintwing Invoker again just seems a little weak. Some of the other invokers were at least more useful at their base stats, but invoker being a 5 mana 3/3 isn't really going to cut it. I don't know what big blue creatures you are running, but there are some good ones out there.
Rootwalla is acceptable. I almost added him, just don't have spot in the 3 drop for him.
Cinderhaze Wretch- There will be slow decks with full hands by the time this guy gets active, so he does have uses there, but I see them often having an answer if they've got cards in hand. And that answer will almost always be more efficient than the 5 mana you spent on your guy. You are right about repeatable discard though, raven's crime and okiba gang shinobi are very powerful. I would consider wretch pretty close to cubable actually since it's better than it appears, just don't think it quite cuts it.
I run a lot of discard 2's for my discard package, like wretch mind, hymn to tourach, mournwhelk, bog down, and auger of skulls.
I feel like this thread needs to get up and running again, so I will get it started. Is there anyway to make your common cube more control friendly? Are there any common mass removal spells besides Evincar's Justice? How about any evasive, hard to kill finishers?
"Do Not Disturb. Why isn't it Don't Disturb? It's time to embrace the contraction. Do Not Disturb is too misleading. Do? Yes I can disturb this guy. Not? *****!"
Ashes to ashes feels like mass removal. But is probably more effective for aggro than control.
To make a common cube more control friendly I've put in a lot of ways for control to just blow people out with attrition. I draft with Usman and he always has these 4 color decks that draw cards, play removal, and generally have some method of recursion. So yeah, removal, card advantage, and ways to gain inevitability (see stuff like death denied). Not too difficult, in fact control is pretty good in my cube.
So, these are the commons spoiled from ROE thus far that I feel have merit in our cubes. Any thoughts?
Ulamog's Crusher8
Creature - Eldrazi
Annihilator 2
Ulamog's Crusher attacks each turn if able.
8/8
Hyena UmbraW
Enchantment - Aura
Enchant creature
Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and has first strike.
Totem armor (If enchanted creature would be destroyed, instead remove damage from it and destroy this Aura.)
Mnemonic Wall4U
Creature - Wall
Defender
When Mnemonic Wall enters the
battlefield, you may return target instant
or sorcery card from your graveyard to
your hand.
0/4
Emrakul's Hatcher4R
Creature - Eldrazi Drone
When Emrakul's Hatcher enters the battlefield, put three 0/1 colorless Eldrazi Spawn creatures onto the battlefield. They have "Sacrifice this creature: Add 1 to your mana pool."
3/3
Really like the Hyena Umbra, really does a lot of good things for commons cube for just 1 mana. Giving a creature +1/+1 and first strike in commons cube makes it a pretty difficult threat to deal with. The totem armor effect is obviously going to be very valuable. I remember thinking it was too bad thrull retainer was uncommon, and this is better and in a more appropriate color for the ability.
The wall is also pretty sweet, I already play izzet chronarch and I'd prefer to have a 0/4 Wall in most decks if given the choice.
The hatcher would feel out of place in cube, since putting spawn tokens in play isn't really that valuable.
Ulamog's Crusher doesn't really have a downside, but it also doesn't have much of an upside since they're likely to die before they sacrifice anything relevant. If you're cube needs an 8 drop he's your man. 8cc is kind of a stretch in my cube, but I'll try him anyways. At the very least he's interesting and can be built around.
Very interested to see what the other common eldrazi will be like. It's going to cost 7 mana, and there is a world of difference between 7 mana and 8 mana in my cube.
There is also the 1W level up guy, who is for sure going in my cube. A good on curve creature that isn't irrelevant in the late game. I always love a good bear.
ah, I missed that guy when I went through the spoiler. He definitely makes the cut. I'm hoping that this set will offer some really good common finishers, that's why I was looking at Ulamog's Crusher. He's not an auto include by any means, but I think he deserves a chance. he's pretty efficient for a common. Anyway, hopefully the colors will get some good ones. I mean, That lifegaining, cantripping, trample wurm is uncommon, which makes me think that there will be some fairly nasty curve toppers at common.
See Beyond
1U
Sorcery
Common
Draw two, then thuffle a card from your hand into your library.
This card is pretty sweet, true it doesn't provide real card advantage since it's a for 2, but it can still provide sweet virtual card advantage if you shuffle a dead card in (most often a land). Even if it doesn't it's still a pretty nice card.
Ondu Giant
3G
Creature
2/4
When it comes into play, rampant growth.
Hmm, a bit of a longshot, but it's a 2/4 that helps you splash.
Skywatcher Adept
U
Lvl up 3
1/1
1-2: Flying 2/2
3: Flying 4/2
Not terrible if played on turn 1, at which point he can become a skyknight legionairre on turn 3. A pretty modest final level too. A card to consider.
So I'd say
See Beyond: Definately
Skywatcher Adept: Maybe
Ondu Giant: Doubtful
I'm very excited for the Spoiler to get filled with cards.
This will most definitely be another good set for us Common Cubers. I had to copy&paste almost every second Common in that ***** as of now...
So yeah, "some" more candidates:
Puncture Light
1w
Instant
Destroy target attacking or blocking creature with power 3 or less.
I can definitely see this in my Cube over Judge Unworthy for example.
I don't know, there is value in the scry aspect of judge unworthy. You get to manipulate your draws a little. It's more of a hit or miss card, but I've always been a fan. Still this card is above average for a removal spell so I'll have to consider it.
Soulbound Guardians
4w
Creature - Kor Spirit
Defender, flying
4/5
A nice defensive creature. I'm afraid that the fact that it's so onesided leads to it not making the cut.
A little one sided and a little late to the party. Probably not adding it.
Distortion Smite
u
Sorcery
Target creature gets +1/+0 until end of turn and is unblockable this turn.
Rebound
Oh boy... Unblockable is literally the best evasion out there and it looks tasty as hell.
I think in many other colors this would be a consideration, but I'd say a fair portion of my blue cards already fly. Maybe I'm not giving it enough credit.
More stuff for blue aggro decks. That's pure Win! Maybe it's just me but I think due to the fact that it the level up is colorless, it might be quite a splashable card.
I like this card a lot too. Level up cards are often cheaper than they appear. For instance how often would I actually use that blue mana on turn 1, not very.
Bloodthrone Vampire
1b
Creature - Vampire
Sacrifice a creature: Bloodthrone Vampire gets +2/+2 until end of turn.
1/1
Yeah, it's one of those guys again. Bigger cubes might wanna check it out. I don't like it too much.
not for me as well.
Cadaver Imp
1bb
Creature - Imp
Flying
When Cadaver Imp enters the battlefield, return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand.
1/1
Cheaper Gravedigger with Evasion? Holy cow! That dude is instantly recruted!
Can't argue with that.
Last Kiss
2b
Sorcery
Target creature or player takes 2 damage and you gain 2 life.
This one is also a little on the weaker side of the bunch. Quite playable, I'd say.
Playable, but for my cube at least I tend to limit the amount of removal, so only the very best gets in. Not sure this qualifies. It's strong but it's just so hard for removal to crack my cube.
Zulaport Enforcer
b
Creature - Human Warrior
Level up 4
[Level 1-2]: (3/3)
[Level 3+]: Zulaport Enforcer can't be blocked except by black creatures. (5/5)
1/1
I think this one's weaker than the blue 1/1 with level up I got all excited about. Still a possible candidate for bigger cubes.
Agreed.
Akoum Borderfoot
4rr
Creature - Giant Warrior
When Akoum Borderfoot enters the battlefield, it deals 1 damage to target creature or player.
4/5
Okay-ish. Nothing too impressive.
yep
Flame Slash
r
Sorcery
Flame Slash deals 4 damage to target creature.
This one on the other hand is sweet. Very cheap and potent removal. I'd say this one is in for sure.
The burn in my cube is already pretty sweet. Sorcery speed hurts, but it's pretty close to StP in a commons cube. Pretty sweet card that will probably have to be given a shot.
Prophetic Prism
2
Artifact
When Prophetic Prism enters the battlefield, draw a card.
1, {T}: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.
Last but not least some fixing. It's about equal to what Prismatic Lens does. I might or might not add it.
Not acceleration, but it does fix mana while replacing itself. Looks like some sort of weird chromatic sphere variant.
So as you can see there are a lot of good things going on. All you have to do now is add some comments.
A few more that I like
Caravan Escort
W
Creature- Human Knight
Level Up 2
1/1
1-4: 2/2
5: First Strike 5/5
I don't really like pouncing jaguar, but I like this card. The level up to get to a 2/2 fits your mana curve, so it really isn't much more expensive to make it a pouncing jaguar to begin with since the echo cost can lead you to have unspent mana anyways, particularly if payed on turn 2. Can be leveled at any time, I know a grey ogre isn't particularly impressive but it has the option to be played as one. And his final level is both manageable to get to in the long game and worthwhile. It's a nice aggro card that can give you some late game power. Basically I hate echo, but I like level up.
"Totem-Guard Bubal"
4W
Creature — Antelope (Common)
When Totem-Guard Bubal enters the battlefield, you may search you library for an aura card, reveal it, put it into your hand and shuffle your library.
2/5
Ok this is a bit of a stretch, but how many pacifism/journey to nowhere cards would you need to make this guy good in a control deck? I know I for one have a lot of those types of cards in my cube. Probably not going to add, but it is interesting. Just thought I'd discuss it a bit as I like 187s.
Kor "Much better than Venerable Monk"
1W
Creature - Kor Cleric
When Kor "Much better than Venerable Monk" enters the battlefield, you gain 4 life.
2/1
Very efficient. Although it's kind of a schizophrenic card, has an aggressive body but an ability control would want.
Narcolepsy
1U
Enchantment - Aura
Enchant Creature.
At the beginning of each upkeep, if enchanted creature is untapped, tap it.
Essentially a blue pacifism (well an all blue curse of chains), very good.
Sea Gate Oracle 2U
Human Wizard Common
When ~ EtB, look at the top 2 cards of your library. Pick one of those and put it into your hand, put the other on the bottom of your library.
1/3
This is just very good, very excited to get to play a dumbed down court hussar. Love good 187s.
Spider Umbra
G
Enchantment - Aura
Enchanted creature gets +1+1 and has reach.
Totem armor
I like 1 mana totem armors. Not as good as getting first strike but still good.
It's going to be hard deciding what to add to the cube, but there are some cards that will definitely be going in.
Sea Gate Oracle 2U
Human Wizard Common
When ~ EtB, look at the top 2 cards of your library. Pick one of those and put it into your hand, put the other on the bottom of your library.
1/3
Yeah, generally about once a set they print a really surprising common. I was hoping for some reason the white WoB would be common, but that will certainly do. I hope it's spoiled correctly.
Staggershock is pretty ridiculous, will easily be one of the best red cards in my cube. I think in commons cube splitting up the damage is straight up better than just having 2R deal 4 to anything.
The dude recall is pretty much dependent on eldrazi spawn to be good in limited/constructed.
Hey guys I don't know exactly when along these ROE comments were made but is there a reason you all left out dawnglare envokeror was it just not spoiled yet?
"Do Not Disturb. Why isn't it Don't Disturb? It's time to embrace the contraction. Do Not Disturb is too misleading. Do? Yes I can disturb this guy. Not? *****!"
I must have missed out on that one. Though it's questionable if it makes the cut for my cube. Sure, it rocks the ROE Draft, I give you that, but Cube has just so much more Removal going on (especially for a toughness=1 guy) plus the format is way faster than ROE ROE ROE.
I'm not sure if I can make room for it in my list.
In addition to many of the cards other people have mentioned, I would absolutely include Ancient Stirrings - excellent turn-1 play for just about any deck, particularly multicolor and artifact decks Prophetic Prism - one of the best mana fixers ever Kozilek's Predator and Emrakul's Hatcher - these are two of the most powerful and interesting cards from the new set Growth Spasm - can ramp directly from 3 mana to 6. Totem-Guide Hartebeest - very interesting in all parts of drafting, deckbuilding, and playing. Also a fairly powerful card.
And perhaps Ondu Giant - a strong rival to borderland ranger imo, though agree 4 mana is a little late for acceleration
I should note that contra FredMaster's comment above, Totem-Guide Hartebeest cannot fetch Journey to Nowhere. That said, it can fetch Pillory of the Sleepless, Pacifism, Arrest, Temporal Isolation etc etc.
Reading through this thread, I didn't realise there were so many common cubers
I'm really not so keen on the strictly-worse Man-'o-War. If they gave it some other ability like Flying but 1 less toughness or the ability to bounce other permanent types it would defo be in. As it is, not so sure.
Wow, they finally fixed Sage Owl. I reckon this guy has potential, but he's not an auto-include. The Outrage is neat as well, but I already have so much red burn that is both cheaper and less red intense, so I'm not sure if the outrage deserves to be in.
An M11 card that is definitely going into the cube:
Sylvan Ranger 1G
Creature - Elf Scout
When Sylvan Ranger enters the battlefield, you may search your library for a basic land card, reveal it, and put it into your hand. If you do, shuffle your library.
Wow, never realized this thread existed. Let's get to it!
Out of the four cards beings considered (Outrage, Ranger, Master and Augury), all I know is that I'm definitely going to have Outrage and Master. Ranger is a maybe, and Augury is probably a no.
Acridian is theoretically awesome, and I don't think I'd cut it for Ranger. I'll probably cut Ranger for Visionary.
Edit: Sweet new spoilers! Here are the cards I think have potential:
Preordain U
Sorcery
Scry 2, then draw a card.
I like it! I'm probably going to put it in, maybe for Serum Visions.
Liliana's Specter 1BB
Creature - Specter
Flying
When ~ enters the battlefield, each opponent discards a card.
Borderline maybe. Not splashable is the main thing stopping it.
Ember HaulerRR
Creature - Goblin
1, Sacrifice ~: ~ deals 2 damage to target creature or player.
Potential, but again, the double red kind of ruins it.
Cultivate2G
Sorcery
Search your library for up to two basic land cards, reveal those cards, and put one onto the battlefield tapped and the other in your hand. Then shuffle your library.
Preordain is definitely a hundred times better than Serum Visions, but I reckon Ponder is still better; getting to see that third card is better than being able to keep one card but ship another away in my opinion.
I'm liking the look of Diminish though, seems like a nice trick to add to blue's arsenal.
I have to agree with you Lanxal, the double colours are very annoying.

Creature — Antelope (Common)
When Totem-Guard Bubal enters the battlefield, you may search you library for an aura card, reveal it, put it into your hand and shuffle your library.

This thing is amazing for C/U cubes!

The dude recall is pretty much dependent on eldrazi spawn to be good in limited/constructed.

Awe Strike can easily go for it.
I used to write cube articles on StarCityGames, now for GatheringMagic and podcast about cube (w/Antknee42.)
Ancient Stirrings - excellent turn-1 play for just about any deck, particularly multicolor and artifact decks
Prophetic Prism - one of the best mana fixers ever
Kozilek's Predator and Emrakul's Hatcher - these are two of the most powerful and interesting cards from the new set
Growth Spasm - can ramp directly from 3 mana to 6.
Totem-Guide Hartebeest - very interesting in all parts of drafting, deckbuilding, and playing. Also a fairly powerful card.
And perhaps
Ondu Giant - a strong rival to borderland ranger imo, though agree 4 mana is a little late for acceleration
I should note that contra FredMaster's comment above, Totem-Guide Hartebeest cannot fetch Journey to Nowhere. That said, it can fetch Pillory of the Sleepless, Pacifism, Arrest, Temporal Isolation etc etc.
A lot better than Civic Wayfinder, in my opinion.

Out of the four cards beings considered (Outrage, Ranger, Master and Augury), all I know is that I'm definitely going to have Outrage and Master. Ranger is a maybe, and Augury is probably a no.
What do you think, Elvish Visionary vs. Sylvan Ranger?

Edit: Sweet new spoilers! Here are the cards I think have potential:
Preordain U
Sorcery
Scry 2, then draw a card.
I like it! I'm probably going to put it in, maybe for Serum Visions.
Liliana's Specter 1BB
Creature - Specter
Flying
When ~ enters the battlefield, each opponent discards a card.
Borderline maybe. Not splashable is the main thing stopping it.
Ember Hauler RR
Creature - Goblin
1, Sacrifice ~: ~ deals 2 damage to target creature or player.
Potential, but again, the double red kind of ruins it.
Cultivate 2G
Sorcery
Search your library for up to two basic land cards, reveal those cards, and put one onto the battlefield tapped and the other in your hand. Then shuffle your library.
Hell yes. Kodama's Reach reprint ftw!
Garruk's Companion GG
Creature - Beast
Trample
3/2
Oh, why must there be so much double colors going around? But it's probably good enough to go in.
I don't like the look of everything else, although Ajani's Mantra might work.

I'm liking the look of Diminish though, seems like a nice trick to add to blue's arsenal.
I have to agree with you Lanxal, the double colours are very annoying.
