I'd rather stay BR here, so I think it's between Torch Slinger and Mind Stone. This deck is mana intensive already so I think Mind Stone > Longbow here. The only reason I'm even considering Slinger is that we need more creatures like that - ETB effects and stuff are great with our recursion. But it is a lot weaker than Mind Stone.
BTW, If we go blue I think that Impulse is the pick, simply because our Tortured Existence is so good - Stinkweed Imp, Gravedigger and Warren Pilferers make it really unfair so digging for it is probably better than an (IMO) mediocre expensive creature.
Ashes and Ashes and Firebolt pick it up. I expected Ashes, but I thought Viscera Dragger had a good chance to be the other. With all the recursion cycling is excellent card draw
Strange picks, maybe, but I think they are correct here given our deck.
First things first, our deck so far: It has a strong mid to late game against aggro - it has two mass removal cards as well as card advantage and
It also has a good lategame against control decks, especially for a deck of this type.
So a better early plan against aggro (and possibly control, but that's not as important as strength in the early game could just be replaced by an even better lategame) is important.
Also, we badly need creatures to make our clock more reliable and have enough targets to maximize our recursion spells.
Vulshok Sorcerer gets the nod here then for ripping aggro to bits.
The next pack is really hard, though, and I think it could easily go either way. First off, Fireball is one of the best red cards in the cube - top 5 easily. Then again, we already have Rolling Thunder and again, our lategame is in general very solid. The only other contender, IMO, is Perilous Myr. Not nearly such a good card, sure, but it is EXACTLY what we're looking for - a creature roadblock for aggressive decks. I hate always picking the "best" oncolour card in packs as it in general reduces consistency and deck synergy, so I'll go with Perilous Myr here.
I understand fully what you're saying. Our deck is reeeeally top heavy. I was hesitant with my own choices. I won't change them, but I'll be happy either way.
I just can't pass Fireball when we're playing red cards. At this point, I'd rather run 10 creatures & 13 spells including fireball than 11 creatures & 12 spells without fireball.
Going to move on. Fireball comes out ahead and I'm going to break the tie in favor of Volshok Sorcerer. If we get a tie breaker vote for the Borderpost right away, I will adjust.
Outrage vs Barbed Lightning basically boils down to if you want to deal 3 damage for 2R, or 4 damage to a creature for 2RR. I think we want mana efficiency here, as most creatures have 3 or less toughness, and if we run into something bigger, we have other ways to kill it. Regardless, whatever card we take here has a pretty good chance of not making our deck. You could argue taking Evolving Wilds in that case, but I'm pretty sure we aren't playing our blue cards, so the only real use for it would be getting more swamps for Pestilences. I'll still pick Barbed Lightning.
The next pick is clearly Gathan Raiders. 5/5s for 3 mana are a lot better than 3/1s for 3 mana. The raiders will be really good in our deck, and we're lucky to have it.
Evolving Wilds I'm not too keen on either of those expensive burn spells for this deck, and even if we're two colours we need some more fixing, we're heavy in both colours. Garthan Raiders - I'm actually not amazingly excited by this, but it's almost always better than Replica and here's no exception.
Barbed Lightning and Gathan Raiders. Chandra's Outrage is awesome, but we already have a ton of late-game removal, so the one that can be used earlier takes it for me. Also, though Raiders is not that insane in our deck, it's still respectable.
Lotus Petal and Torch Slinger.
Slinger's an obvious pick, but Lotus Petal is just something I do. Are we playing with sideboards? Because if we are, I often board in the petal against decks where some or other card is useless as it is better than a land after you have enough. I also sometimes board it in against fast decks for more likelihood that I don't get steamrolled.
If we're not playing sideboards, Sunlance is the obvious hate pick. I'd like to point out that someone's picked Cloud Crusader over sunlance, for whatever reason.
Spreadsheet of the complete draft available at the bottom of this post.
Pack 3 had a lot of Red, the 2 previous packs had significantly less Red, pack 1 had the least. 2 decks had red as a primary color, the guy we shipped Rancor to Pack 1 picked up a little red in pack 2.
A self critique for my first forum draft before I release all the pools:
- I may have stayed true to color a bit more severely than appropriate, I'm a crappy hate drafter as it is and with all the knowledge I had, it felt wrong to pick an off color card to hate if there was a good on color pick. I also tended to pick multicolor cards that shared one of two colors with the deck when I probably should have hated. 15th pick Outrage is probably a good example. Should probably have been hated instead of seat 2 or 3 picking up a partially in color, probably won't be splashed, card. I'll fix this for next time and try to be more hateful.
- I don't think I put enough focus on fixing. I noticed a lot of fixing making it into the last picks. I think I might need to develop "personalities" for the seats before I do another draft (and I want to keep doing these with feedback for what makes it enjoyable for you all). When all the seats have my personality we end up with final packs having 2/4, 2/3 mana fixers.
