It's fine -- not great here, since it needs one of two things... either a super aggressive deck that can happily pay 8-12 life, or a ramp shell that has a good amount of Cultivate-style shuffle effects. This deck was kinda in-between and not great, with 7 creatures at 5+ mana and only two ramp effects.
The Mirror Match deck is one of the best examples of UW control I've seen in a while. It's also something that shows up often enough that I'm thinking of adding an Elixir of Immortality or Psychic Spiral, since it sometimes -- including one game during this draft -- just loses to decking itself while in total control of the board.
I forget what that guy had in his sideboard, but I think it's moreso a case of a newer player knowing to play spells in two colors and not really considering why the same deck wouldn't want a vanilla 2/1 and a 7-drop.
Finally got my cube up and running at an FNM! Found six people (incl. myself) who defected from Standard to draft.
I went 3-0 with a sweet Sultai-splash-white value/graveyard pile. I love a deck that can put Hermit Druid to good use, and it was definitely happy here -- fueling delve and Deadwood Treefolk, and flipping flashback stuff like Lingering Souls and Deep Analysis.
One of the sweeter plays was stealing a UW deck's Paragon of New Dawns then beating down with even-bigger Spirit tokens!
Also amusing was the deck put together by one of the three first-time drafters. It was mono-black with Carnophage and Tormented Hero... and 8-drop and 9-drop Eldrazi. Did not perform very well, but the young kid playing it had a great time while losing.
And, about on pace for most MTG expansions, I've got my Shadows Over Innistrad update ready on CubeTutor. Some/most of the cards have been used for a handful of drafts already, a few others got put in just now without any actual experience.
I say "added" and not "changes" since I've got ~40 cards from the Cube out in the mail for signings, so I just sleeved up new cards without taking anything out. Once more cards get returned by their artists, I'll work on trimming down to a proper 540
WHITE
Town Gossipmonger: seems like a staple, and one of the best aggro 1-drops across any color. By using a summoning-sick "buddy" to flip you don't even miss a second attacker, and it can even be done after the Gossipmonger itself blocks a 3/2 or something if needed.
Gryff's Boon: cheap evasion, a little recursion, a nice card. Still want to test Wordmail in this slot, too.
BLUE:
Stitched Mangler: works about as well as Frost Lynx, so pretty great. Lynx is definitely nicer art-wise, though.
Essence Flux: I love Cloudshift, and while my blue creature count is lower this still has plenty of good uses in a lot of decks.
BLACK:
Heir of Falkenrath: been sweet for me in SOI draft, though "madness outlet" is not really a thing for CUbe. Still, it's a Piker with a lot of upside when you need it.
Morkrut Necropod: already won a few CUbe games single-handedly, it's a beast.
Tooth Collector: added today, not played yet.
RED:
Village Messenger: solid aggro guy that isn't Tattermunge Maniac.
Kessig Forgemaster: shuts down X/1s in combat, goes into red control (aside from dying to your own Pyroclasm), and still attacks nicely on either of its sides.
GREEN:
Duskwatch Recruiter: I really underestimated how good the flip side's mana discount is. This card is insane.
Weirding Wood: an uncommon/unusual choice for CUbe, I like ramp and fixing that has built-in flood protection. Also makes Arbor Elf better!
--
Some cards I forgot to buy or are on the "maybe later" list include:
I'm a ways behind on new releases, but got a few drafts in recently with my Cube still mostly in the pre-EMN configuration. And in one of those drafts, I finally remembered to keep a deck intact and snap a photo afterwards!
Here's a quick 2-0 Bant deck (splashing Lingering Souls flashback) from a 4-man draft on Sunday:
Haven't actually added many new cards in 2017... I keep putting off a bulk purchase of 1000 new sleeves, and saying I'll add AER/KLD/etc. when I do that But I got my first draft in several months in last week, and have another scheduled for today!
I went 1-2 with mostly-W tokens -- in a four-man draft with Sultai midrange and Gruul aggro tied at 2-1 records. They shuffled their decks back into the cube afterwards, but here's (a rough shot of) mine:
Basically all the good flying token makers, two four-drop lords, good removal... just didn't quite come together at the right times.
Restored balance to the universe, won a 4-man draft of my cube
Abzan CURSE YOU!!! was pretty brutal to get going... just a pile of creatures and a couple of super strong ways to make my board even better.
BTW, Azorius Guildmage is absurd -- won multiple games with it EOT tapping two of my opponent's things, then main-phase tapping the other two and getting an alpha strike in. SO GOOD! I probably didn't need the Hallowed Fountain to pay for its blue ability, but the two life also never bit me so oh well!
It was certainly capable of some ramp-to-nothing draws, but it worked out often enough that an early Druid's Familiar or T4-T5 Beast Attack was enough pressure to win
Only got two rounds in, unfortunately... but my four-color pile somehow went 2-0 to win again!
R1 was the Bant opponent -- some REAL bombs with Mind Control, Persuasion, Cloudgoat Ranger, and Behemoth Sledge. I also saw the U activated ability of Azorius Guildmage in action for the first time that I can remember, shutting down both my Enclave Cryptologist and a Gideon's Lawkeeper! But, I don't think I saw any non-basic lands -- I won a G3 when he mulled to five and never could get his mana working properly.
R2 was against Rakdos Aggro -- plenty of low-end cards, both Skinrender and Flametongue Kavu to clean up the board, and a Shrine of Burning Rage, too! I somehow won G3 on four life when he had a Goblin Bombardment and three creatures in play... I needed him to not draw ANY creature or ANY burn spell for multiple turns, and somehow the draws came up in my favor.
I lost in the finals of last week's draft with my average Boros deck splashing for Behemoth Sledge to a first-time drafter and his Esper Tempo list. Forgot to save either of our decks, but we got back together last night for a 4-person draft and I won in nifty 3-0, 6-0 style with a four color control list
Got a neat four-person draft in yesterday; we used five packs of twelve each, but "burned" the last four from each. Nice little way of seeing a greater percent of the cube, but faster and simpler than burn-as-you-draft formats like Glimpse
Anyway, I P1P1'd Behemoth Sledge and crafted what I thought was a pretty solid Bant deck, but managed to 0-3 my own cube for the first time in I don't even know how long!
Boros did it again in this week's draft, a 5-person get-together The mana looks absolutely atrocious, but I guess if do you draw one source of each color then you can do some cool aggro things.
Back again! Did a 3-person Winston draft on Wednesday; it was a little disappointing to not get enough for even a modified draft (for the first time in 2+ months of weekly gatherings), but fun to try a different format.
The very first card I saw in the draft was Booster Tutor, so I grabbed that and didn't look back Went 2-0 against a Golgari midrange deck and a pretty aggressive Esper list.
