Spawn is the better creature for aggro, but pretty much only sees play in that one deck. And aggro will play the Specter (and the Nighthawk in a pinch) but midrange decks will happily play both, and even control can make use of the Nighthawk. What I like most about Nighthawk is that even though it's not amazing in any deck, it's playable in all of them. Spawn has the highest ceiling for aggro, but won't see play in any other black shells. So that was why I cut it. Not because of powerlevel, but because of the # of decks that can utilize it.
Icy has been in and out of the cube many times over the years. It's weird, because I never felt the need for Icy specifically, but I feel the impact of not having an effect like it around. It's a good answer to manlands, Swords, Aetherling, Sneak Attack ...it can protect you, tap down blockers, tap lands, combo with Winter Orb; it does a lot of things. It's one of those cards that's easy to forget about and often feels like it should be the 24th card when you're deckbuilding. But every time it's in play, it feels so good to have. So to answer your question, I don't know "why now". It feels right, I miss having the effect around, and I think that there's enough justifications for it. But more importantly, I discussed it with my playgroup and they love the card. So if it's gonna get played, it's worth tossing in there.
right on - it's an old favorite, I always assumed it was too expensive/slow to work in cube.
I have such fond memories of that card and I really love the versatility - you've inspired me to try it out.
Wtwlf, do you have access to Photoshop? Because you have an amazingly pimp cube and it's obvious you take a ton of pride in it. But the pictures of your cube on cubetutor are terrible. The colors of everything look awful and it would be so easy to fix it.

It might be the Friday night rum talking, but this interaction made me lol. I'd agree with Pringles that your cube pics on CT are definitely of... uhm... a lesser quality. That doesn't change the fact that you have a super sweet cube and even with the low quality images, I still drop by pretty regular to check out the visual spoiler.
I know it's a back handed comment, but I think he has a point. There are easy ways to remove the red/orange tint from your images.
Bringing in that multidraw hate! I was going to ask if you thought Narset's potential to pseudo-impulse twice was enough reason to try her out over classic impulse, but then I noticed the Leovald. Are you testing for that passive abilities relevance, or is additional draw more common than not in your drafts? I'm also a little sad to see dovin go- but I'm also not seeing a lot of people draft him from my own cube. I thought he was great for my opposition and/or tempo decks, but I'm pretty much the only one in my group who did that.
No worries man, I know you're just trying to help. But no, I don't really have the time nor the inclination to go back and fix 540+ cube pictures. It only bothers me a little bit that the light balance isn't ideal and that all the pictures aren't super consistent. But I try to keep it freshly updated and to make the pictures look as good as I can, so it is what it is.

Dovin was pretty awesome. He wasn't removed for underperforming or failing to contribute, only that the new Teferi might just be too good not to use and had to go in.
I think that you need to extract both the draw-combo element and the pseudo-impulses from Narset to make her worth a slot. Coupling her addition with bringing in Leovold helped with that consistency, and now it serves as kinda a mini draw-combo archetype. I've always wanted to play Leovold, but I felt that he needed like 1-2 more cards in his color combinations to make the combo element more consistent. Finding both Narset, Parter of Veils and Finale of Devastation to help with the consistency was a huge boon to that strategy.
Are you thinking of doing a top 20 article for Modern Horizons? I know they take a lot of effort on your part, and I think you usually skip supplemental products, but you already have 19 cards in your potential inclusion section
Understand if you don't have the time to do so, but they are some of my favorite articles Thanks for all your effort.
I've never written reviews on non-Standard sets, and I just don't have the time to start now.
Conveniently, if you want to see what my top-20 cards are from this set, you can just watch the set update ...since like 20 cards are going to be going in anyways, lol.

Presumably the Canopy lands would only occupy one spot though
hey wtwlf - i'd love to get your thoughts on Teferi, Time Raveler. I run a smaller cube than yours, so I haven't quite gone the Narset/Leovold route, but I thought Teferi was a very interesting candidate given that I support Storm. I think the potential to start storming off in an opponent's end step (especially since one of my Storm cards is Crow Storm) seems extremely valuable. I'm also wondering if you think a card like Teferi could push Storm more into viability, or if its merits are strong enough to justify it a slot in smaller cubes anyways?
Also, Teferi Hero vs Teferi Raveler? That's the cut I've made the for the time being (I find Raveler much more interesting to play/build around), but would love to hear your thoughts. thanks!
Also, given the 7 swords we have right now, which would you run in a ~400 cube?

Fair enough, if you would upload them yourself I could do the color fixing for you. I can just batch download the images from your cube tutor visual spoiler Press "Ctrl+Shift+L" then "Ctrl+S" and then "enter" and I'm done. I could have your cube done in 25 mins probably.

The new Teferi is pretty good. I don't think the "storming off at instant speed" is why it would make Storm better, it'd be the static ability preventing the opponent from stopping you while you're going off. Teferi doesn't make me feel any different about Storm's viability in cube. I don't think it's a particularly important card for that archetype at all.
But the 5cc Teferi is still the more powerful cube card by a pretty good margin.
I'm not sure how many Swords I'd play at 400. Fire and Ice is the only surefire inclusion. I like the build-around nature of both Light and Shadow and Truth and Justice, so if you play decks that would be interested in those swords, I'd play them too. After that, I'd add in as many as you have room for starting with Body and Mind, Sinew and Steel, Feast and Famine ...and War and Peace bringing up the rear (though it is a spicy card with draw-7 effects).
