Losing because you weren't lucky enough to see a second removal spell in your other colors is very unfun.
While not technically banned, I'm not paying like 8 thousand rubles to get a Library of Alexandria or cards in that range. Especially since I run the risk of the card becoming Libanry of Alexbandria after the first game.
(This is exactly what happened with maze of ith)
Skullclamp
My cube has become overrun with tokens, so in all honesty the card would spend a disproportionate amount of time basically just being an uncounterable Mind Spring with convoke and buyback 0.
It's like I just don't want to ever get on that Fun Train.
Sinkhole, Timely Reinforcements, and Reckless Waif
So yeah, these cards aren't so good as to deserve being banned. They've got a bit of an identity problem.
Sinkhole is sometimes fair by cube standards. Sometimes it ends the game on turn two and it "doesn't even really count". Waif is sometimes fair by cube standards, sometimes deals 1 damage despite being put down on turn one and despite not being hit with a kill spell, and sometimes deals 12 damage just because.
Timely reinforcements is sometimes Bruce Willis; a kindhearted man with everything to lose and nothing to gain who does it all out of the kindness of his bald little heart. Sometimes it's Arnold Schwarzenegger; A bully who's blunt and unbeatable, who makes it's presence far too known and whose name somehow shows up in my auto correct when real words don't.
Seriously, someone had to make a conscious effort to program that into my phone's software.
morph
In the end, the cards caused problems by their nature. Some people didn't know what morph was and that's a lot of explaining. If we were using face down cards as tokens, morph was sometimes a silly liability. But most of all, the worst part of the mechanic was that I knew what the morphs were and the other guy didn't. It was injecting another way for me to be better at my own cube, and it feels dirty.
No this card doesn't win constantly. But when it does win, my god. I'd rather go to bed with a Jolteon rather than watch someone win with this card, Midnight haunting, and 10 of the worst turns of your life.

Why, yes. I throw down $$$ at my local Staples to get some high quality, color prints. 274 cards, multiple copies of the commons and uncommons, plus revisions over the last 6 months (since I started printing)
I tried not to use artwork that was already in my cube. The momentary blink variant... well It almost is momentary blink so there's no confusion there. The 4/4 for 1GG originaly had enlisted wurm's art, but then it ended up being good enough for the cube (so far) so the art changed. Lastly, there's a counterspell that I want in, but I'm using remand's art so I am looking for a replacement first.
Also I don't know how to feel about the custom card as personally I am against running them (I'm a purist cuber) but at the same time I really like how they are crafted into the environment instead of people just including things because they can, which is normally my major strike against custom cards.
I especially like the green 4/4 as I have a soft spot in my heart for vanillas. I feel people often loss sight of what a card is trying to do by adding too many unnecessary abilities.
Why, yes. I throw down $$$ at my local Staples to get some high quality, color prints. 274 cards, multiple copies of the commons and uncommons, plus revisions over the last 6 months (since I started printing)
Whatever their high quality, nonglossy paper is. It can run me something like 40$ already so I'm not looking to step up that much.
Soul crusher, the customs aren't made for the cube; they're from an outside project that we've been treating as a real set. The cards are cool and strong but fair and themed and balanced to the best of my abilities. To the project's credit, it has only around 9 cards in the 400+ card cube, so it wasn't too overloaded with goodies. Right now the best performers have been the white and black lifelink guys. I started with something like 6 more in here, but they got cut just like any other card.
But you're right. People tend to overload their cards pretty heavily. Nonsense, I tell you. There is one set on the forums that's pretty good though. Something about pirates and sanctuaries.
In any case, the only thing that sucks is that I can't share stories with you guys. Plus, I have two more amazing red two drops than you, so my aggro has a boost.
Drake umbra didn't end up in the hands of a blue player yet. The last time it was in my cube it was strong, but blue aggro wasn't a thing yet. It's back for a rehash, like reassembling skeleton next to an old favorite card of mine, thoughtpicker witch.
Deeeeeeeeeefinitely a typo. I was also "missing" shrine of burning rage until this morning too.
Neither treespeaker nor overrun have been decked in months. Well... overrun has once or twice, but it was dead. I'm unsure as to why, since I have such huge token support.
I could try cryptologist again, but I remember her never being as effective as she could be. That was before I toned down the removal, though.
Also, Wtf how does this thread have so many views already?
People don't run Treespeaker at your house? That's nuts, man. It's a more fair Sol Ring. I can't imagine five mana on turn three not being main deckable in pretty much any green deck.
I really wanted to glance over your guild section. Here's some thoughts and questions...
Is Ribbons of Night as ridiculous as it looks? Looking at my own black section, I feel like the only card I'd be willing to cut would be Recoil. Using that as a nice segue, do you really like Recoil more than Agony Warp?
You're not running Boggart Ram-Gang. I think Fires of Yavimaya is quite terrible in cube. Haste is an amazing ability, but I want to be doing so much more on my turn three than dropping an enchantment that does nothing for me on that turn.
What decks typically want to play Juniper Order Ranger and Enlisted Wurm? Which would you say is better? I'm looking to cut Krosan Verge for being glacially slow and I think these guys could be exactly what I want. I may actually cut Nantuko Monastery as well, but I do love man lands.
Have you thought about Consume Strength over Ebony Treefolk? Consume Strength is so powerful. What are your thoughts on [c]Necrogenesis/c]? I like that it gives me something to do with my mana, hates on my opponent's 'yard, and provides a use for my dead creatures.
How has Plaxcaster Frogling been for you? I'm running it too, but I haven't really seen it in play yet. Without knowing how the frog typically plays, I think I'd recommend Jungle Barrier over the frog. I'm not usually a huge fan of walls, but Barrier just does what most UG decks want to do. It's a huge road block that easily eats up X/2's, plus it cantrips. I like that card a lot for Simic.
How do you like Rally the Peasants? Boros is such a tough guild to put together at this rarity. The power level really drops off quick and there's basically no good uncommon fixing (hence why I'm playing the pain lands).
Anyway... that's my thoughts on your guilds. Definitely looking forward to your replies!
All around good questions
I don't know why treespeaker it hasn't gotten decked but in the meantime I'm just gonna try the werewolf. Treespeaker could come in at any time, though, as its practically the "next in" unless I steer away from ramp.
Ribbons is freakin ridiculous. I don't know how red decks come back after it.
Recoil deals with a few cards that are categorical nightmares for ub, like centaur glade and squirrel nest. You should have enough traditional control elements in UB. anyway (the terminate argument)
I still havent drawn fires of yavimaya, so I'm not sure yet. I'm envisioning all of these insane scenarios with blastoderm or firemaw kavu... waiting to see if it's possible to be ridic
The witch either makes your guys unblockable or let's your trades actually amount to some damage. Late game, its always the former which is pretty damn sweet.
The Selesnya guys get maindecked almost 100% of the time. Juniper should be more deck dependant but so far it hasnt been outed in a list. Loan lion, on the other hand... that hasn't gotten played very much at all. Qasali pridemage is overdue for a comeback anyway.
Fun fact: JOR is dumb with kitchen finks.
I think necrogenesis is nonsense in the sense that it makes tokens in limited quantities. not being able to take over games like other generators is whack.
Consume strength is playable and next on my list of golgari cards. Needing two targets is unfortunate.
That greatly decreases the consistency of the card. from what I can tell. besides, ebony tree is Cathodion with upside, and you know how much I love those.
Plax frog hasn't been played... because there's been only one ug deck in the last two centuries. I want to see it played, but wall is likely better. Carven caryatid into it sounds incredibly annoying too.
I have like 5 thousand token generators in white and a bunch of fliers, but this card is just nuts at times. The card literally has Juuuust enough going for it to be really effective. My cube is a good environment for it though
The most blowout scenario i could imagine would involve two pairs of combating creatures. Having 1GB open to counter a burn spell is awkward sounding and using it as a removal spell sounds dismal. I'd have to be playing it for its ability to 2 for 1 in combat, which I guess isn't impossible to imagine since you can shoot a bystander
Oh
BTW
Ram gang got ousted because flinthoof boar took the sleeve and I never sat down and went back in to make space. To bw honest, I might actually... drop shivan oasis unless fires flops like cali says.
Nicely done, good sir. Seven mana for a 2/2 is so ridiculous. You have to be so far ahead before you even start being able to make 2/2s. I've found that card abysmal since forever.
Nicely done, good sir. Seven mana for a 2/2 is so ridiculous. You have to be so far ahead before you even start being able to make 2/2s. I've found that card abysmal since forever.
I don't think it's that ridiculous. While it's actually 8 mana (7 and tapping itself), it has a few advantages that are really sweet. For one, it's on a land. That means it can provide mana until it can generate it's incredible bear advantage, is one of the hardest permanent types to remove, and can't be countered. Two, it provides a lot of threatening bodies over time. Each factory worker can pick up a weapon, or a bunch of them can gang-block a target and kill most non-evasive critters pretty handily. This gets by targeted removal and can quickly take over game. When there's so many good things going for a freaken' land, I think it's worth keeping in the cube. I've never been disappointed with it, and in multiple games recently my friends have needed to cast removal on the land. (Faith's Fetters, Acidic Slime, Brutalizer Exarch.)
The factory is exactly what I want in a control deck: It is hard to remove, its ability can be played in my opponents turn, it doesn't take a spell slot and it has inevitability. The activation cost do not even matter that much because you get to 7 mana most of the times just as you start to take over the game with slow control. I saw it win many a game. Great card for peasant in my book.
Edit:
Most of this is true for Stalking Stones as well, it is just more of a one shot. I run both.
Not that the card was abysmal, it just took too long between drafts to matter.
Like isochron scepter.
That's actually kind of apt
It needed control but getting to 8 mana didn't always happen, and when it did it didn't always matter. Sometimes, the game was already won. It is by no means a bad card, but it only made an impact something like... 7.5% of the drafts where it got picked up.
Steel wall, I suppose is its "replacement" at the moment, and that card has been solid every match. It's like a duress that usually gains you some life along the way. Sometimes 2, sometimes 10.
Wall of tanglecord has been even more ridiculous.
Stalking stones does not provide an infinite oppressive number of dudes (at a high cost). The two cards are worlds apart in function, but control can play it anyway because a 3/3 is bigger than most things.
I'll gladly admit my errors, always... (for those of you who dont know, cali and I have a tendency to argue, and I was pro urza's factory)
...I find that it is a good way to establish credibility
BTW
My damn keldon megaliths showed up in Korean....
After tragic slip, it was the least played of the removal spells. Outside of G/U, decks had enough removal to not have to stoop to paying 4 life for it.
But the primary motivation was definitely to prevent monolithic 3 color+ decks from sitting behind a wall of removal and blanking everyone else. With green being repurposed, this was suddenly easier than expected. This is also a reason for why I'm a little light on draw spells in blue.
Its closest neighbor was Snuff out, but since almost all of the drafts out of my cube use 2 players, the nonblack drawback didn't exist.
So
At 0 and 1 mana, snuff out was better. At 2 and 3, obviously dismember is. But the cards are attractive because they can be played for less mana than their worth, so Snuff out's draw is bigger.
Of course i am. I don't see how it matters. At some time, the people upstairs decided that this effect was good in limited at uncommon.
To be honest, If they printed more cards like elite vanguard, I'd have their counterparts in the cube.
While we we are on the topic of blurred rarity lines, I've been giving more thought to the painlands.
Edited the title to better reflect the environment. When I get home, I'll make clean up my lists a bit. I did most of the changes off the top of my head, so the may be incomplete.
There are a couple of ins/outs that aren't in line with the majority of cubes though

Edit:
Most of this is true for Stalking Stones as well, it is just more of a one shot. I run both.

The biggest standout to me is the cut of Dismember. Is there specific reasoning for that other than just too much removal?

To be honest, If they printed more cards like elite vanguard, I'd have their counterparts in the cube.
While we we are on the topic of blurred rarity lines, I've been giving more thought to the painlands.
Lastly, I made an unexpected cut

There are a couple of ins/outs that aren't in line with the majority of cubes though
Some of which are
In
Out
By the way Shower of Coals is 100% insane.
