We had a 4-person cube day on Sunday, getting through three drafts.
DRAFT ONE
Dave (Golgari Midrange): 2-0
Garret (Boros Midrange): 1-1
Conor (Rakdos Aggro): 1-1
Taylor (5-color Control): 0-2
Dave grabbed Dreg Mangler in the first pack and never looked back, picking up solid early/midgame creatures (including MVP Vampire Nighthawk) and strong lategame bombs (Enslave, Pelakka Wurm).
Ironically, Taylor's thus far all-defeated aggro deck knocked off BennyDJazz's undefeated deck in the third round with an Imperious Perfect/Bellowing Tanglewurm combo in one game and the afore-mentioned Ulamog's Crusher in the other.
Despite ditching his first two picks (Bituminous Blast, Qasali Pridemage), Dave managed to hoard all of the best black cards, putting together a near-monochrome deck that posted a strong record.
Garret's bomb-less control deck couldn't handle the raw power of the Naya deck or the pro-white Knights in the Golgari deck, usually just delaying the inevitable.
DRAFT THREE
Garret (Golgari Midrange): 2-0
BennyDJazz (Dimir Control): 1-1
Taylor (RWU Aggro): 1-1
Dave (Selesnya Aggro): 0-2
Garret piloted an eerily familiar deck to a perfect 4-0 game record. With a core similar to Dave's from Draft One, Garret added a Skullclamp to the equipment mix and an Exsanguinate to the late-game bombs, making a winning deck even winning-er.
BennyDJazz's control deck looked to be the runaway winner, as he managed to grab Loxodon Warhammer, Confiscate, Crystal Shard, and an absurd amount of card draw to get to his ETB creatures. But his lack of creature quantity was his undoing, as Garret was able to keep almost all enemy threats off of the table.
Taylor's odd concoction took advantage of Aether Vial to cheat any of his landlocked creatures on to the board, making for very aggressive openings.
Dave, going away from his affinity for black decks, couldn't quite make it work, ending up with an underpowered aggro deck that couldn't match up with Taylor's creatures and quickly ran out of steam against BennyDJazz's life gain and control elements.
I'm a little concerned with running a guild creature with no evasion, no hexproof/shroud/regeneration, and no ETB value. But, UG isn't exactly brimming with better options (Coiling Oracle? Snakeform?), so I'll try it out and report back.
Did you mean Slagstorm or something else? Slagstorm is rare.
I think Calciderm is better than Glimmerpoint even if you are trying to push blink.
I dont like the River Boa ---> Scryb Ranger switch. River Boa is such a good creature that puts pressure on blue decks. Scryb doesnt put any pressure and cant protect itself like the Boa.
Im also a HUGE fan of Agony Warp. It goes great in tempo/aggro decks as well as control decks. Its been in my cube since the beginning and is only recently getting pushed out for something else but I will always be ready to put it back in.
Im not sure about the rest since Ive been out of the Peasant loop for awhile.

Whoops! I guess I'll try out Whipflare instead. I was looking for more board sweeper effects.

This was my initial thought as well, but I'd like to try it out and see how it does. If it works well, I might swap Calciderm back in for another under-performer.

This wasn't done for power level reasons (although, there's no way you could have known that from my post). I haven't been very happy with the contingently unblockable guys, in general (Mire Boa, Black Knight, etc.) They were either duds or game-winners, depending upon your opponent. I'd rather have cards that allow for more interaction and game play skill-testing. Thus, the changes.
Im also a HUGE fan of Agony Warp. It goes great in tempo/aggro decks as well as control decks. Its been in my cube since the beginning and is only recently getting pushed out for something else but I will always be ready to put it back in.
Ditto. I'm trying out some of the new multi-colored goodies, but I suspect that Agony Warp will be going back in for whichever one under-performs.
Go to my thread if you want sweepers. I'm playing almost all of the relevant ones except Famine and I just ordered it.
Also, kudos on cutting boa. If you want to see a list of cards that might violate that position on swinginess, I have a list.
Cutting Compulsive Research seems very wrong to me. I think it's one of the best Blue cards in Peasant.
I'm trying to move blue towards more instant effects, so that counter-draw strategies are more possible. You'll notice that I also added in a couple of flash creatures to facilitate this move. If I were to keep Compulsive Research, which card would you cut, keeping in mind my objective of having more instant effects?
Go to my thread if you want sweepers. I'm playing almost all of the relevant ones except Famine and I just ordered it.
I was hoping for something 1-2 turns faster, but without Slagstorm, I will be keeping Sulfurous Blast in. Looking at your list, Leelue, I don't see anything I'm not playing except Firespout, for which I'd be hard-pressed to cut a Gruul card.
I forgot about your modern restriction when I wrote that thing about the sweepers.
I suppose that you're missing Hideous laughter, but you don't want a 4drop.
Talrand's Invocation just wasn't what our blue decks wanted to be doing with four mana. In control, tapping out on turn 4 was only good if it gave significant card advantage (Concentrate) or slowed the opponent down (Sleep, Aetherize). If it was 3U, I'd leave it in for when blue is a tempo splash in aggro decks. Ironically, I pushed blue-based tempo in this update, so this may come back in.
Ultimate Price was a victim of too much similarity at the same spot. It's a great spell, but I wanted some diversity of spell abilities. Smother and Murder came out for the same reasons.
Kodama's Reach came out because I don't allow functional reprints in my cube. Otherwise, it would be a shoe-in.
I find this very hard to believe, since it does exactly what you said you want your blue decks to do
Yes, technically, it slows down the opponent, since the 2/2's act as roadblocks. But, it isn't nearly as effective as the cards with which it's competing.

Thanks for the response!
I only need a card for each of the enemy guilds right now, as I'm one short currently. But, I like all of those suggestions.
Do you have another one for Simic Guild? Shardless Agent isn't Modern legal.
Will do!

DRAFT TWO
BennyDJazz (Naya Midrange): 2-1
Dave (Golgari Midrange): 2-1
Garret (Azorius Control): 1-2
Taylor (Selesnya Midrange): 1-2
BennyDJazz took a suboptimal Celestial Crusader with his first pick, but followed up with a slam dunk second pick of Loxodon Wargammer that Taylor passed over for Ulamog's Crusher. The rest of BennyDJazz's deck came together with strong 4- and 5-drops (Bloodbraid Elf, Serra Angel, Stormfront Riders)and a particularly key Fireball.
Ironically, Taylor's thus far all-defeated aggro deck knocked off BennyDJazz's undefeated deck in the third round with an Imperious Perfect/Bellowing Tanglewurm combo in one game and the afore-mentioned Ulamog's Crusher in the other.

Snakeform is a decent card.
Lorescale has the ability to actually win a game on its back.

Agreed. That's why it's going in.
Off-topic: Any thoughts on the other changes?

I'm trying to move blue towards more instant effects, so that counter-draw strategies are more possible. You'll notice that I also added in a couple of flash creatures to facilitate this move. If I were to keep Compulsive Research, which card would you cut, keeping in mind my objective of having more instant effects?
I was hoping for something 1-2 turns faster, but without Slagstorm, I will be keeping Sulfurous Blast in. Looking at your list, Leelue, I don't see anything I'm not playing except Firespout, for which I'd be hard-pressed to cut a Gruul card.
Gracias. This change was actually in part based on your explanation from your cube. I'm considering excising some others for similar reasons.
I suppose that you're missing Hideous laughter, but you don't want a 4drop.
Rend Flesh > Murder
For compulsive research, I'd cut Bone to ash, despite your instant speed push. The card just isn't very good in my experience.

I'll think about it. I do like the instant speed.
Good call. Not enough Spirits to matter much, but the single B is key.
Bone to Ash is already being cut for Aetherize. Any other suggestion?
