Hi all, been lurking here for a while. I've been putting together a "modern" cube for 2-4 players. I thought I'd post my list and perhaps get some constructive criticism, or just plain see if I'm doing something super silly.
Also, I thought it'd be nice to introduce myself, which would encourage me to speak up every now and then in the threads I lurk in.
I wanted to build an 8th-edition and beyond cube because I can be pretty obsessive compulsive, and having cards with the two different fonts in my hand isn't something I've gotten used to yet ^^. My collection is mostly all 8th and forward too, so it was easier to put this together. I'm okay with white-borders and the white font from the Planar Chaos cards (planeshifted?), but not the timeshifted or futureshifted borders, or promo/DCI/foil cards (I don't want to foil out the whole cube, at least not yet ;), and having some foil and some not would have seriously bugged me too). Duel Decks/Archenemy etc. are fine though (unless they're foil like Akroma).
So...thanks for reading all that, and bearing with my weirdness.

It's pretty cool how close the modern cube is in terms of power level to the more general cubes. Welcome to the cube forum, and it looks like a great list.
Here are some vague thoughts on it
White:
Goldmeadow Harrier seems pretty underwhelming for aggro and I have a hard time imagining control getting much use out of him before he got hit with a removal spell. Maybe try Akrasan Squire?
I agree with Eidolon that that's a lot of sweepers in white and Elspeth 2 had been fantastic (as, incidentally has Sunblast Angel which no one here seems to use). Probably cut Martial Coup for Elspeth?
Blue
I think you're going to be hard pressed to support blue aggro and blue control with only 360 cards. In our experience, the blue tempo archetype loves blue control cards whereas the blue control archetype completely shuns tempo cards, so I guess I'd lean towards supporting control.
With that in mind:
Ninja of the Deep Hours seemed awesome to me, but every time I played him he would either wait in my hand for a while or draw me one card in exchange for picking up one of my own guys. When that was a mulldrifter or shriekmaw, that was awesome. Otherwise, that was pretty sad.
Riftwing Cloudskate seemed pretty weak too; he was too slow for tempo and the control decks had better cards.
Wake Thrasher and Calcite Snapper fit in the same boat of blue creatures with nice bodies who don't do anything else. Neither of them worked particularly well for us.
Clone seems very much a take-it-or-leave-it type card. You don't have that many big creatures, so possibly a steal effect would be better here?
Draining Whelk seems painfully overcosted. I haven't played it, but there must be better counters that give you a 2 for 1.
Jace's Ingenuity is pretty narrow - is the instant speed really valuable?
I agree with Eidolon that the spells are a little bit removal heavy. Maybe that's a good thing. The only thing that stood out was Oona's Prowler who seems pretty awful if you don't have much reanimator support (does the deck work without tutors and with only mannequin and reanimate?). Pulse Tracker has been very good, especially since you don't have the normal one-drop aggro guys, and is even better in two-headed giant.
Green
Life from the Loam seems surprising - with only 5 fetches and no land destruction (balance, geddon, strip mine) and limited reanimator support, has it been very good?
Some possible inclusions are Hurricane (Green reach is awesome), Briarhorn (2 for 1 or just win the game), Basking Rootwalla (1 drops that aren't mana elves are nice), and Creeping Mold (remarkably versatile)
Red
My first instinct is that that's a lot of X-spells and that your middle casting costs are a bit light. Maybe cut Demonfire and Comet Storm? Rift Bolt was always unpleasantly slow and Hellkite Charger never seemed to win the game.
I don't really think you need all the signets, especially in a 360. Does RW ever use theirs? It actually looks like it works out pretty nicely; the places you have the weakest gold cards could use the signets the most. If you cut the 10, that would give a slot for 5 shard cards (perhaps Rafiq of the Many, Wild Nacatl, Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker, Esper Charm, and something from Jund - Broodmate Dragon is traditional, but hasn't every been amazing). The shard cards are a lot of fun and tend to push people into three color pairs even if they wouldn't have gone there on their own. You also pick up 5 more artifact slots - some suggestions are Guardian Idol, Sphere of the Suns, Engineered Explosives, Everflowing Chalice, and Myr Battlesphere. Alternatively, these could be vivid lands or a card of each color, though some of them would definately be nice to find room for.
Lands look pretty good, though I'd think about swapping out bouncelands in some of the more aggressive combinations (RG, WG, BR) for the Scars duals or (WR, WB, BG, maybe UG) for the Painlands.
. I feel like the last four could all be used in a control archetype, but I guess you gotta cut something. Perhaps Repulse would be a good one to add as well. How do people feel about Rewind?
In black Pulse Tracker sounds like a great idea, probably in exchange for either the Nezumi Shortfang or the Oona's Prowler. Eidolon also brings up a good point about Sudden Death; I didn't know about its main uses. I'll have to come back to look at what removal to take out for the 2nd-tier cards like Mind Shatter which incidentally looks pretty fun.
Silly me forgot about Koth of the Hammer. So we're probably looking at putting in:
.
I'll have to take a look at additional three-drops another time. I think I might try to squeeze in Stone Rain somewhere in here as well.
As far as Life from the Loam and Crucible of Worlds I'll have to do some more play-testing to see. That sort of recursion effect is something I'd love to play around with, if I can support it, so ideas about how to go about that would be greatly appreciated.
I'll also probably end up cutting one of those big green cards some time, probably Rude Awakening is my guess, maybe to try out the Basking Rootwalla or Hurricane.
And I think I'm just going to revamp the whole multicolored section to account for signets and bounce lands. So there's probably going to be some upheaval there, but I'll have to fix that when I have some more time on me.
Oh, also, yes, Blue has 47+Shelldock and Green 47+Treetop, while the other colors have 48. I just counted those two lands as colored cards.
To do: revamp multicolored section! Preferably with goal of cutting signets/balancing with bouncelands/SoMlands/painlands, and cutting out the weak Hybrid cards.
Thanks again for the helpful advice! Much work to be done...
But I'm not sure how much it will help as your Cube is already much more powerful than mine.
I have some miscellaneous questions/comments:
- I like the changes in your most recent post.
- Gideon belongs in the 5CC section, but you have him in 4CC.
- You can't run Seal of Cleansing since it's only available in foil in the 8th border, but if you ever feel you need more artifact/enchantment removal in White there's always Revoke Existence, which is of pretty equal quality.
- I've never tried Rune Snag before (mainly because its text aesthetically bugs me in a singleton format! :p), but let me know how it works out. Ditto for Broken Ambitions as an extra Condescend.
- Are you sure about the Mold Shambler cut? I've never been disappointed with the card.
- I have to agree with the above posters with regards to splitting hybrid from gold. I like the overall idea of it, and if they start printing hybrid cards more often I'll likely do it myself. But some colors have much better hybrids than others.
- I like the Cube, and I'm glad to see another 8th face one!
Changed up the Guild section! I think it looks much better (and makes much more sense). The color pair I was most unhappy with was probably B/W - not too excited about the signet or the angel, but oh well. Still need to reexamine which color pairs get painlands though I think - not sure what the consensus there is - I gave all pairs with blue in them bouncelands, and all pairs with either blue or green in them signets.
Also got a few games in! For my reference as much as anything, (as most of these 'insights' are probably painfully obvious to those who have had many opportunities to Cube):
Troll Ascetic is amazing (someone got a Behemoth Sledge on him and just destroyed face ^^). Can't wait to try Thrun.
Other cards that seemed to do very well were Plow Under, Phyrexian Arena, Jitte, Treetop Village, Sorin Markov, and we loved Black Sun's Zenith.
Black Sun's Zenith in particular was a lot of fun, and the reshuffle clause actually came into play (not saying it's necessarily a statistically significant occurrence, just that it's pretty fun when you wipe some poor guy for the 3rd time in a game).
Cards that were less than inspiring included Martial Coup and Chandra Nalaar. Martial Coup, like Eidolon predicted above, really was just always one mana too expensive for our tastes. It wasn't bad - I was the one playing with it, but there were just quite a few times when it was sitting there in my hand and I was wishing it was just a little faster. Might switch Akroma's Vengeance back in, after a few more tests with the Coup. Chandra was just kind of meh. She was expensive and didn't seem to do much. Dunno. More testing is undoubtedly needed, but I'd be curious of other peoples' experiences with her.
Cards that didn't make the cut included Terastodon, Krosan Tusker, and Stonewood Invocation. I think the obvious ones (that I remember right now off the top of my head) were just the big green ones (since I think other big green cards got played in their place) - it's possible green is still a little too top-heavy. I think we also just might not know how to play Krosan Tusker. He looked weak and therefore didn't get played.
Edit: Apparently we have been reading Krosan Tusker's cycling ability incorrectly (as just cycle -> go find a land). Do people usually count him as 2G for mana considerations then? Also, it's possible Chandra was just put in the wrong kind of deck (not red control).
Things to also check for include the amount of enchantment/artifact hate in the Cube. Not sure if our deck-building skills were just subpar (and therefore didn't include the hate), or if there just wasn't a lot to be put in, but things like Jitte and Arena stuck around for whole games, and ultimately won games that way.
Don't plan on changing anything based on these result alone - just for reference. If cards consistently underwhelm after my sample size grows, however, then maybe we'll see. It was lots of fun though!
It's been a while! Very busy, but here are some changes; not all these are NPH changes - also balanced out the guild lands, and KvD gave us a new version of Silver Knight =D. Got to play a little, Sword on an Obliterator is pretty great, but then again, Sword on just about anything is pretty great...
The addition of the above counters (ages ago) worked out really well. If you were still curious BlueBabyDragon, I liked Broken Ambitions a lot, and Rune Snag ended up bugging the hell out of me too whenever I played it. So Snag might leave some time, but it was pretty good too, so it's difficult to balance practicality and quirkiness... Dismal Failure and Hinder seemed okay. I may try Daze or Deprive I think, but I'm not sure.
Arrows don't necessarily mean the cards were directly switched for each other - more like the left cards were switched for the right ones in a given section.
A member has completely fallen in love with Obliterator, so we're going to try to push the mono-black theme for a while and make everyone happy =). Suggestions as how to do this would be most welcome. I think I may want to make room for Gatekeeper of Malakir...
Dunno about those last two, especially the Rootwalla. But we'll give them a try, and perhaps end up putting the Rootwalla back in for something like Green Sun's Zenith.
Very happy about getting in Creeping Mold and Exarch though. Been meaning to get in Mold and Shambler in for a while, but then Exarch came along =D.
It was either Duress or Despise - chose Duress for now, although I'm not sure this whole mono-black experiment is going to work out. It is starting to feel like I'm pushing for mono-black at the expense of making black worse...
It was sad cutting the Phyrexian Processor - but only because I had gotten the X/X Minion tokens =(. But it was either that or Loxodon Warhammer or Basilisk Collar, and the Processor just didn't cut it most of the time.
It was Squee or Smash to Smithereens - I'm not actually sure I'm running anything that combos with Squee - just the Masticores perhaps. I think Smash is leaving soon anyway though to make room for Ghitu Encampment.
Cutting Rune Snag was mostly an aesthetic decision - the text did end up bothering me considering the singleton format. Going to try Negate for a little, but I feel doubtful it'll stay. Daze is probably next to try on the list.
Thanks for the comments wtwlf123! I'm more than happy to give Duress and Processor another try, but Smash is getting cut this time around anyway so they're both out right now.
About how much would you say it would take to build your cube if you only priced the cards over $10? I'd like to get a ballpark number to see about building one.
I'm not sure about cards only over $10, but using Deckstats the total cost is approximately 1295.33 U.S. dollars. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but my guess is it's probably within +/- 100 or 200.
Also, got an Instigator Gang! Chandra the Firebrand came out for it (perhaps Keldon Champion instead?) - Chandra was always okay, but red is getting tight. Perhaps she'll come back in one day.
Edit: Also just as a note - this cube isn't Modern-legal in the strictest sense - I just called it that since I wasn't sure what to call it at the time. There're Duel Deck cards in there, as well as Commander/Planechase/Archenemy cards, and no time-shifted, future-shifted, or foil cards included. The choices are mostly just to satisfy my own aesthetic preferences ;). I'm sure it'd be easy to switch a few cards in and out if that was your goal though.
Using the low cost on TCGPlayer (so if you wanted to go out and buy the cheapest edition of each card in the cube right now), it's $1339.60 (though that is using the cheapest version of each card, not the cheapest version in a modern face; I'd guess they're pretty close, but I don't have any real data to back that). If you only want the cards that cost at least $10, it's $852.08 (with the same caveats).
Thanks you guys just saved me some headache! I'm trying to get a ballpark of what it would cost to build a cube with more power level but not 1000+ cards. Most of the cards that are pricey I own.
I agree - keeping Horizon Canopy out was an aesthetic decision for me - but if they had a non future-shifted version I'd add it in a heartbeat.
Ohhh, I see. I should have read that, sorry. I was just asking because with Crucible of Worlds and the like Horizon Canopy is insane. I think my modern cube will be everything that's actually legal in the modern format minus the ban list so Jace, the Mind Sculptor can be there with his pal Ancestral Vision.
Sad about Silver Knight - just got that new-border one from KvD =(. I also don't know if Martial Coup would be better sticking around, to support archetypes like Tokens. I was already somewhat indifferent between Akroma and Coup anyway (although, as the change implies, thought Akroma was a little bit better).
Card probably most unsure about cutting: Ghitu Encampment.
Cards still to include:
Liliana of the Veil
Cards on the bench:
Markov Blademaster
Edit: Also, if anybody has some insight as to the U/x, W/B, and G/B lands, I'd be interested in hearing them - specifically I've been thinking of replacing the Bouncelands for Filters or MXX lands, but am not sure which are better. I'm leaning towards the Filters right now.

Goldmeadow Harrier seems pretty underwhelming for aggro and I have a hard time imagining control getting much use out of him before he got hit with a removal spell. Maybe try Akrasan Squire?
Eight-and-a-Half-Tails is cool, but tended to be really color intensive for us. He'd make a nice swap for Accorder Paladin.
In exchange for these, I'd suggest something like Dismal Failure, Rune Snag, Broken Ambitions, Hinder, Volition Reins, Consecrated Sphinx, and Mind Spring
Black
I agree with Eidolon that the spells are a little bit removal heavy. Maybe that's a good thing. The only thing that stood out was Oona's Prowler who seems pretty awful if you don't have much reanimator support (does the deck work without tutors and with only mannequin and reanimate?). Pulse Tracker has been very good, especially since you don't have the normal one-drop aggro guys, and is even better in two-headed giant.
Green
Life from the Loam seems surprising - with only 5 fetches and no land destruction (balance, geddon, strip mine) and limited reanimator support, has it been very good?
Terastodon, Rude Awakening, and All Sun's Dawn are good, but as you mentioned, you're a little top heavy.
Some possible additions could be Red Sun's Zenith (another X-spell, but almost surely better than Demonfire), Cunning Sparkmage, Hell's Thunder, and Countryside Crusher to help fill out the 3-slot a bit more
Artifacts
Otherwise, you have a lot of equipment, so maybe consider swapping Loxodon Warhammer for Bonehoard. Crucible of Worlds also doesn't seem as impressive without a lot of the old cards (same comment as Life from the Loam)
Gold
For gold cards, I'm not sure I agree with splitting hybrid off from gold. A lot of the hybrid cards you were forced to include are either weak (Snakeform), or pretty color intensive (Figure of Destiny). While they work pretty well in single color decks, they'd be tough in a two colored deck of another pair. My suggestions here are to swap out Azorious Guildmage, Nemesis of Reason, Snakeform, and Nucklavee for their respective signets and then consider Behemoth Sledge for Harmonic Sliver (you have a ton of equipment) and Creakwood Liege for Glissa, the Traitor.
Land
Lands look pretty good, though I'd think about swapping out bouncelands in some of the more aggressive combinations (RG, WG, BR) for the Scars duals or (WR, WB, BG, maybe UG) for the Painlands.
I think right now I plan on switching out Eight-and-a-Half-Tails for Accorder Paladin and Akroma's Vengeance for Elspeth Tirel in White, first of all.
In Blue, off the bat we're going to switch in:
for:
and either
- Jace's Ingenuity
- Clone
- Draining Whelk
- Calcite Snapper
. I feel like the last four could all be used in a control archetype, but I guess you gotta cut something. Perhaps Repulse would be a good one to add as well. How do people feel about Rewind?In black Pulse Tracker sounds like a great idea, probably in exchange for either the Nezumi Shortfang or the Oona's Prowler. Eidolon also brings up a good point about Sudden Death; I didn't know about its main uses. I'll have to come back to look at what removal to take out for the 2nd-tier cards like Mind Shatter which incidentally looks pretty fun.
Silly me forgot about Koth of the Hammer. So we're probably looking at putting in:
for:
- Demonfire
- Comet Storm
.I'll have to take a look at additional three-drops another time.
Duplicant for Engineered Explosives.
So changes made this time around:
for:
- Eight-and-a-Half-Tails
- Akroma's Vengeance
- Ninja of the Deep Hours
- Riftwing Cloudskate
- Wake Thrasher
- Jace's Ingenuity
- Nezumi Shortfang
- Demonfire
- Comet Storm
- Rude Awakening
- Duplicant
.To do: revamp multicolored section! Preferably with goal of cutting signets/balancing with bouncelands/SoMlands/painlands, and cutting out the weak Hybrid cards.
Thanks again for the helpful advice! Much work to be done...
My Cube
My Custom Cube - a super-powered Core Set
My Cube
Black:
Slaughter Pact -> Dismember
Ob Nixilis, the Fallen -> Phyrexian Obliterator
Makeshift Mannequin -> Lashwrithe
Sudden Death - > Despise (too many targeted discard?)
Terror (too bad, I really liked the Mirrodin art, very cute - the other two are pretty too...Terror has good art all around) -> Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
Disfigure -> Hex Parasite
A member has completely fallen in love with Obliterator, so we're going to try to push the mono-black theme for a while and make everyone happy =). Suggestions as how to do this would be most welcome. I think I may want to make room for Gatekeeper of Malakir...
White:
White Knight -> Silver Knight (hooray for duel decks!)
Austere Command (one slot for Austere Command/Martial Coup/Akroma's Vengeance - currently Coup) -> Porcelain Legionnaire
Knight of the White Orchid -> Blade Splicer (not sure about this one, but want to test the Splicer)
Red:
Bogardan Hellkite (or Hellkite Charger?) -> Moltensteel Dragon
Blue:
Clone -> Phyrexian Metamorph
Pesterminte -> Spellskite
Draining Whelk -> Consecrated Sphinx (been meaning to try Sphinx out for a while now)
Green:
Stonewood Invocation -> Creeping Mold
All Suns' Dawn -> Brutalizer Exarch
Basking Rootwalla -> Noxious Revival
Terastodon -> Beast Within
Dunno about those last two, especially the Rootwalla. But we'll give them a try, and perhaps end up putting the Rootwalla back in for something like Green Sun's Zenith.
Very happy about getting in Creeping Mold and Exarch though. Been meaning to get in Mold and Shambler in for a while, but then Exarch came along =D.
Colorless:
Sword of Vengeance -> Karn Liberated
Nim Deathmantle -> Sword of War and Peace
Duplicant -> Batterskull
Guild:
Golgari Signet -> Llanowar Wastes
Sarkhan the Mad -> Blackcleave Cliffs
Gruul Signet -> Copperline Gorge
Selesnya Signet -> Razorverge Thicket
Others to try (but didn't find cuts for them yet) include (roughly in the order of interest):
Thanks for reading!

Any thoughts are appreciated! All in all, a good haul for new-bordered cards in the last few months (Bolt, Mom, Lavamancer, Sol, etc.).
My Cube
Blue:
Merfolk Looter -> Faerie Conclave
Rune Snag -> Negate
Red:
Squee, Goblin Nabob -> Stone Rain
Colorless:
Phyrexian Processor -> Precursor Golem
Black:
Duress -> Gatekeeper of Malakir

My Cube
Combo-Free Kiki-Jiki
I'm not sure about cards only over $10, but using Deckstats the total cost is approximately 1295.33 U.S. dollars. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but my guess is it's probably within +/- 100 or 200.
Here's the link: http://deckstats.net/deck-945216-91b42141719a32944351d14d6660b58f-en.html.

By the way, what do you think of Horizon Canopy over Razorverge Thicket?
