Since I'll be picking up a FTV:E soon (at MSRP, woot) I decided to update the cube with it. School gets back in on the 28th, so hopefully I can finally test this baby out then.
OUT:Spirit Loop; IN: Balance- the loop was just a placeholder
OUT:Voidmage Apprentice; IN: Serendib Efreet- prob the worst morph, so whatever
OUT:Gigadrowse; IN: Mystical Tutor- the tutor needed in, obviously
OUT:Careful Consideration; IN: Gifts Ungiven- the better four mana card draw wins
OUT:Thrill of the Hunt; IN: Berserk- ultra upgrade
OUT:Aether Spellbomb; IN: Sensei's Diving Top- Blue already has Crystal Shard in the artifact department
OUT:Shimmering Grotto; IN: Strip Mine- OMG, I finally have a good utility land...
The other stuff I either have in or don't seem cubeworthy (well Tinker is, but I don't have the artifacts to support it).
I was finally able to draft my cube!!! We had a five way match at the Planechase release and was able to find a sixth guy to draft my cube afterwords. The seating from left to right was:Me, Alan, What's His Face, Jimmy, Charlie, and Jerrod. Here's the decks:
Me:
I drafted G/W aggro (my favorite archetype ever), but I really should've been drafting blue (only one person was in blue!). Green was also overdrafted with 3 people in it :(. The deck was pretty straightforward, just cheap dudes and equipment. I wish I had gotten more removal, but both of the people next to me were drafting the white control cards. And yes I know its 42 cards, so sue me:p.
Alan: Alan drafted W/B aggro-control. He was to the left of me. I don't really have a way to tell what was in his sideboard and what wasn't and his land count, so I'll do the best I can.
What's His Face: I don't know him, but Jimmy did. He was to the left of Alan and drafted some kinda Naya deck. He wasn't really a serious drafter and built a sixty card deck, I think. Here's what I have for him (similar to Alan).
Jimmy: Jimmy was by far the most experienced player at the draft and drafted U/R counterburn. IMO, it was the best deck, which isn't surprising considering he was the ONLY person to draft blue. He pretty much owned us all with Gelectrode and massive card advantage.
Charlie: Charlie has only been playing about a year so he wasn't very familiar with the older cards. He drafted a midrange Jund deck with a bit of a graveyard theme and a small LD theme.
Jerrod: Jerrod is my brother and is the person most familiar with the cube, next to me. He was to my right and drafted a very controlling W/B deck with pretty much every board sweeper there was and some reanimation.
Report: (note:some people played 2 games, others played three)
Me:2-1
Alan:0-2
W-H-F:0-2
Jimmy:2-0-1(Charlie and Jimmy only played two games due to time)
Charlie:1-0-1
Jerrod-:1-1
Round 1: Me(G/W aggro) v. Alan(W/B aggro-control)
Game 1- I played a turn 2 Mire Boa, he had swamps and could never kill it. I think it did 18 damage (with some help from Vulshock Morning Star).
Game2-I played a buch of dudes including Twinblade Slasher and Mire Boa, but he pretty much killed everything I played for the first 5 or so turns of the game. Eventually he ran out of kill spells and I rode some equipped dorks ftw.
Win: 2-0
Round 2:Me v. Jimmy(B/R counterburn)
Game 1-I started off with some early beats and got him down pretty low. Eventually he stabilized with a Gelectrode and a Jilt. He also stole one of my equipped creatures, but I got it back with a Flickerwisp. I tried to kill him with an equipped Thornling, but he just had too much card advantage and bounce.
Game 2- Very similar to game one, even down to a Flickerwisp of my stolen, equipped Albino Troll. Again, he gets me with Gelectrode, but I eventually stabilize with an equiped Blade of the Sixth Pride, the troll, and some other dork. He's at three, but I make a bad mistake of not paying the upkeep of the troll after it blinked back and I lose because of it.
Lose: 0-2
Round 3: Me v. What's His Face(Random Naya)
Like I said, this guy didn't have much experience(60 card deck, remember). His deck was WAY too slow and he couldn't keep up with my beats in both games, even after a Planar Cleansing in game 2.
Win:2-0
Overall-4-2
I was really happy with how this turned out. Everyone had fun and I was finally able to put all those hours of hard work into good use. Please feel free to leave a critique of my draft or just some general words of advice. Thanks!
or dinosaur pirates!!! big hulking dinos with eye patches and peglegs and troll the ocean on their ships made of smaller dinosaur bones in search or treasures. I would sooo go for that. or better yet, slave dinosaurs that serve the pirates like some sick dinotopia world where people own the dinos.
And the good drafter drafted blue but left crystal shard in his sideboard?
I'm confused.
Well, he hasn't been playing too terribly long I think (prob. since right after Mirrodin) so he must have missed the memo about the shard. Plus, I don't think he has much experience with cubes. This may have been his first cube draft, but I'm not sure.
or dinosaur pirates!!! big hulking dinos with eye patches and peglegs and troll the ocean on their ships made of smaller dinosaur bones in search or treasures. I would sooo go for that. or better yet, slave dinosaurs that serve the pirates like some sick dinotopia world where people own the dinos.
Enslave is cool because it's such a non-black ability. It's the same reason Harmonize is a good green card. Black Control Magics are sweet. Plus, the life-loss part is way cool.
(+ In a budget cube you might have the time to cast it. It hasn't been terrible when it was in my list, before I started adding lowering the curve and adding expensive cards.)
Yeah, the one time I was able to draft (curse you school!!!) someone was able to cast the Crush of Wurms I just took out, in more than one game, lol.
Both were really nothing more than morph bait and I've really never liked morph. Plus, blue needs less creatures and more spells.(Whelk might as well be a spell).
Excellent changes, sir! I think you'll like Draining Whelk. That card has been very good for us. It can often be a game swinger that suddenly puts you ahead and very close to winning the game. I've lost to that card too many times to count.
While putting some cards away, I realized I had completely forgot about the White Knight and Stromfront Pegasus I had. I also want to see how Kor Skyfisher is and put back in Arrest after reading some good debate on its merits.
I also noticed that my White spells are basically a giant pile of removal spells, which is kinda boring. Any thoughts on cheap (moneywise) white spells that aren't removal or on my "Cards to get" list on my OP?
I'll second the props for your changes. Nice job. I'll also reiterate how good Land Tax can be. It's really nice to be able to say, "I've got no more lands in my deck."
The creatures are just upgrades and a mono black theme probably isn't worth supporting. The Ghoul is for future zombie interactions (and 'cause Ghouls are cooler than Nantuko :P)
I undecked my Arbiter since he pretty much died the instant he appeared in our multiplayer games. I did not know my brother had a Fires, so in it goes now. I wasn't sure if I should have taken out the Scab-Clan Mauler or Firespout, so I took out the Firespout because it seemed redundant with Savage Twister. Or is Firespout the better card? And thanks for the advice on Temporal Spring.
Without a huge zombie theme, Phyrexian Ghoul isn't good enough to play after we lost stacked damage. Zombify could be a Diabolic Servitude, which can be used multiple times. Firespout is way better than Savage Twister, which happens to be a weaker version of a monocolor card.
Firespout IN, Savage Twister OUT. The Phyrexian Ghoul is what I had on hand and will be better once I get Cemetery Reaper and Graveborn Muse. Diabolic Servitude looks like a pretty sweet card, I'll have to get one.
SEALED DECK REPORT
Me, my brother(Schizophrenic Toast) and my friend Charlie played a little sealed deck with my cube today. Here's what happened:
First thing I saw was that red was pretty crappy and that I had the Skullclamp (hell's yeah). At first I tried to build a WUB control deck, but I just didnt think it had a solid way to win the game. I then scolded myself for not realizing how ridiculously aggro my white and green was (GW aggro is my favorite archtype of all time, afterall), and promptly went about building a great aggro deck. The pool did have some pretty good fixing(3 Vivids, really?) and some strong multicolor cards, so I wouldn't fault anyone for thinking of 5 color good stuff. I just dont like that archtype and dont think I could build it very well. I think some kinda control deck with a green splash for fat may have been possible as well, but that's too much thinkin' for me.
A R/B deck with two islands for Gifts Ungiven. I think that the black and red are obvioulsy the best colors in this pool, with the green and white being utter crap and the blue good, but not great. I like his build, though I think I would have upped the amount of blue. I would cut the 3 red creatures the Strip Mine, one mountain, and the Black Knight for Mulldrifter, Serendib Efreet, Repulse, Impulse, and two Islands.
This pool has crap for black and the blue is lacking in the spell department. This left W/R/G, all of which are pretty decent. I probably would have went W/G, since I love that color pair, or Naya, seeing as the mana fixing is very good for that shard. I could even see 5 color being viable with all the fixing in this pool. Charlie went the R/W way and I think he tried to make an aggro deck, but got to distracted by shiny looking cards (to be fair, he's only been playing for a little over a year). I would have cut the Hostility, Bloodfire Kavu, Breath of Life, Scepter of Dominance, Mind Stone, and Magma Spray for Goblin Ruinblaster, Blade of the Sixth Pride, Kami of Ancient Law, Fireslinger, Temporal Isolation, and Lantern Kami.
Matches
Me vs Schizophrenic Toast:
Game 1- I get Soltari Priest + Elephant Guide. He dies a horrible death. Win
Game 2- I get stuck on two mana for the longest time, while he gets mana flooded. He doesn't play much while I beat with a Mistral Charger. I get play a Balance, nuking 3 of his lands, but he still stays flooded. I eventually get some land and he cant recover fast enough from his flood. Win
Game 3- He's mad and wants a rematch. We trade back and forth for the first part of the game, I get in some damage, but we eventually stall out with my Invicible Kitty (a Phantom Tiger with an Elephant Guide) and a Moldervine Cloaked Icatian Javelineers vs his Tephraderm and Black Knight. I get a Skullclamp to push through, killing the 'derm, but then he drops Skeletal Vampire and makes me a sad panda. However, I have a Flickerwisp, and blink my Javelineers so I can kill his last bat after he regens against my Invicible Kitty. Win.
I win 3-0
Me vs Charlie:
Game 1- I get stuck on two land, but manage to drop an Akrasan Squire, Bonesplitter, and Kor Skyfisher. He drops Rakdos Pit Dragon, beats me with it, and kills my dudes at some point. I get stuck on 3 mana for a while as well. I almost stabilize at one life with a Wickerbough Elder that could destory the Journey to Nowhere trapping one of my dudes, but I needed one more Plains so I kill the Dragon with my Prison Term that I had all game. Lose
You really thought I could have gone three colors with a lone armillary sphere for fixing? I believe thats a little too greedy.
Anyways, I played two matches against Charlie
The first match he was stuck on two mana and played no creatures while I had a fistfull of removal and no creatures. Once he finally drops a creature (a savanah lions) I have a tephraderm and another smaller creature. I decide to be funny and promptly play slave of bolas on his lion during my next turn. He rewards me by playing Hostility. I somehow mangage to kill it and win.
The second match was similar except this time when he dropped hostility he had a turn to make 4 3/1 hasty tokens. Unfortunately for him I have plenty of removal. I spend one turn using bituminous blast and magma jet to kill hostility followed by using lash out, seal of fire and another removal spell to kill the three remaining tokens (I had previously blocked one with tephraderm).
Overall, during both games Charlie's slow starts allowed me time to fill my hand with removal and win-cons that outclassed his.
or dinosaur pirates!!! big hulking dinos with eye patches and peglegs and troll the ocean on their ships made of smaller dinosaur bones in search or treasures. I would sooo go for that. or better yet, slave dinosaurs that serve the pirates like some sick dinotopia world where people own the dinos.
After the matches, we thought that this deck was alright, but it needed one or two more draw spells and another counter and really needed a cheap sweeper.
Game 4- I start with Icatian Javelineers and Skullclamp. I hit him with it a couple times. I try to play Flickerwisp, but he counters it and then plays Mask of Memory and Brainstorm. I attack some more and play Kitsune Blademaster and equip it. He responds with Wall of Frost, but I have Prison Term, he kills the Blademaster. He drops Hostility, I move the Prison Term, play Juggernaut, and sac my Javelineers to the 'clamp (they did 5 damage to him, btw, lol). Next turn I try to play River Boa, it gets countered, but I follow up with Erhnam Djinn. He stays on defense, but I double equip the Djinn with a newly drawn Bonesplitter to punch through his wall. At some point he had played a Waterfront Bouncer, he tries to use it to save himself with bounce, but he eventually runs out of cards. Win.
Game 5- I start with Akrasan Squire and Icatian Javelineers to his nothing. I attack, but he kills the Squire with burn. I drop Flickerwisp, hit his face and play Juggernaut. He plays Hostillity with help from an earlier played Mindstone. I drop Bonesplitter and equip the 'naut so that his Hostility will die with the 'naut. He tries to mount a defense with Djinn of Wishes, but I Prison Term it. Win.

Nice. I might keep Promise of Power over Enslave though ... IDK pretty close in power.

Yeah, the one time I was able to draft (curse you school!!!) someone was able to cast the Crush of Wurms I just took out, in more than one game, lol.
@Shalazar: Enslavehas an easier casting cost so it got the nod over Promise of Power.

Lose
Game 2- He drops a Plated Geopede, Goldmeadow Harrier, and Savanna Lions. I kill the Geopede and Harrier with a Kor Skyfishered Icatian Javelineers. He kills my Fisher and I play a Ernham Djinn, but he Journey to Nowhere's it, then equips his Lion with a Mask of Memory and forestwalks me like a dick. I play a Skullclamp, and draw some cards with my Javlineers. We attack and trade for a few turns and I kill two of his dudes with Balance. Eventually I make a stupidly powered Kitsune Blademaster that has Skullclamp, Behemoth Sledge, and Moldervine Cloak on it. He trys to stall with Yosei the Morning Star, but I Flickerwisp it and beat his ass with my super Kitsune, mwahaha. Win
Game 3- To be played sometime in the future.
MVP's: Soltari Priest, all my equipment and Auras, Icatian Javelineers, Flickerwisp.
Schizophrenic Toast Vs Charlie:
Toast wins 2-0
Me vs Charlie
Game 3-He starts off with a Goldmeadow Harrier and a Plated Geopede and I start with an Elephant Guided Soltari Priest and a Bone Splitter. He Journey to Nowhere's my Priest and I Prison Term his Geopede. He drops Rackdos Pit Dragon and hits me I play Flickerwisp and equip it and hit him back. I play Erhnam Djinn. We stall for a while, but eventually I play Ant Queen, free my Priest with Wickerbough Elder, and drop Behemoth Sledge. He doesn't find any answers. Win.
Charlie decides he wants to try a new build. He takes out all the white in favor of blue and switches to a more controlling build.
Chalie's New Deck:
1 Waterfront Bouncer
1 Looter-il Kor
1 Riftwing Cloudskate
1 Wall of Frost
1 Man-o'-War
1 Clone
1 Bloodfire Kavu
1 Magma Phoenix
1 Djinn of Wishes
1 Quicksilver Dragon
1 Hostility
1 Rift Bolt
1 Burst Lightning
1 Brainstorm
1 Counterspell
1 Miscalculation
1 Izzet Signet
1 Mindstone
1 Mask of Memory
1 Puncture Blast
1 Flame Javelin
1 Izzet Boilerworks
9 Island
7 Mountain
Win.
I win 4-1
