Cube Design Choices
I do NOT believe that a perfect balance on multicolor cards is needed. However I do want to try to equalize them over time. But I don't need to get perfect numbers to be happy with my Gold section. Too many people try to get those numbers rounded and added subpar cards to do so. Your cube shouldn't be about perfect balance in hard numbers, it should be about playing good cards and giving every color about the same % of options.
Cube History
I started assembling a Cube after the famous article on the official Magic the Gathering website. My local playgroup really enjoyed playing with it and I've always tried to listen to their feedback to adjust the cards as needed. It started as a 720 card cube. About 1.5 years ago I removed almost 200 cards and stopped caring about color balance. It worked out great for the decks that were built. In 2011 and 2012 we didn't play a lot of cube but I want to get them to play with it again. I used to read and write a bit on this website's cube forum but I simply lacked the time to keep doing that. I must say I'm impressed by the increasing amount of people having a cube and the analysis done by some
Cube cards history
Some cards in my cube have a history or a story to tell:
- Gifts Given is one of those cards. The playgroup has always been 50/50 about it and as such, after 3 years of being in the cube, it has been cut. The card hasn't returned so far.. ;-)
- Delay has spent some time in my cube as a pet card. But not in the English version, but in the French version, because then the name is ******
- I included some Unhinged cards to make things more fun, and they have been. Carnivorous Death-Parrot brings back memories of a certain draft and you won't find a better 1U 2/2 flyer ;-). It has now been cut, but it's a good example. Booster Tutor has always been in the cube and just required 15 cards of the cube leftover to use. Because the card interacts with an unused part of the cube, I really enjoy having it in the cube.
- In 2018 I cut the size of the cube from 540 to 360. This make it more likely to see and draft high power cards. It also limits the archetypes that are supported.
I think including all the bounce lands is a poor choice. I would include a "wild card" guild land. The Zen manlands are very good as well as Horizon Canopy, and the aggro focused colors like painlands a lot more than the slow bounce lands.
I've always like the bouncelands because they allow you to get more mana out of your cards. There's more than 1 card that untaps permanent (mostly for Time Vault) and those will get you more mana as well.
On the other hand, I'm not THAT attached to them, so I could always replace them. I've ordered the U/B manland because I think that's the only good one. I could add all 5 of em and use some kind of other land for the enemy colors like the regular painlands.
(edit: ok, Canonnade I like too..)
Well at least you make me think about it. I will give it some thought.
@eidolon232:
hahaha that's a long list. I must add I've already gone throught some of the "recommended lists" and I really don't agree with a lot of the cards. For example, I don't want 5 *** effects in my cube, so naturally cards like DoJ come up on the recommended list Another good example if Sword of War and Peace. It's nice to have all 5 swords in there but I really do NOT like this card. The trigger is the worst of the 5 imo and doesn't help your board. Maybe you don't need to and you'll deal enough dmg.. Maybe not. That's why I like all the other swords instead. It gives you more options.
But as I said in my first post, I'm going to tinker with it in the next 2 weeks and the list you posted will help in one way or another, I'm sure, so thanks
About your comments on my suggestion lists. Those lists are mostly notes. Things I'm pondering about. But since you went over them, I'll go over what you said.
- Hmm the testsubject seemed a solid card for blue control. You can add counter instant speed, have you played with it a lot ?
- Bramblecrush, or Mold Shambler, I want to add one of them, since I don't have any removel except Beast Within. I guess since I want more creature Bramblecrush will no longer be a candidate.
- Rampaging Baloths is one of the most insane creature with landfall (and the fetches) but I'm not sold yet.
- I may not add Darksteel Ingot, I only recently added the fetches, so perhaps there is enough fixing so I don't need to add that.
- Twinblade Slasher was in there and was cut. I saw it on a lot of lists so I decided to maybe add it in again.. Maybe not..
- T&N I've played a lot with, but never in cube. Too expensive I guess.
- I have neither Hex Parasite nor Brittle Efigy, but both seem VERY good cards on paper. The effigy isn't a creature but it's colorless remove for 5 mana. The Parasite seemed a really good card to kill planeswalkers with and the many cards using counters. WHat's not to like. It's the first card on your list I really don't agree with you.
- Mogg Fanatic served its purpose and there must be better 1 drops or even 2 drops to replace it with.
- Unearth I really like, I do. But in black there's a lower amount of <4 cmc creatures than in other colors so I rather cut in favor of a good 1-2-3 drop and stick with the reanimate I already have. Can you give an example where it was really good ? (edit: I guess it's good with Bone Shredder, still not convinced)
- Dauthi Horror is a 2/1 unblockable that can't block.. (actually, the 3/1 blue shadow blocks it) There's plenty of creature like that around and I think they must be a better version of it around. But I'll gladly keep it since it's an altered card.
- Nekrataal: I have 2 similar cards in cube. This one is BB and has poor stats for 4 mana. It's always borderline and so far it stayed in. It may not be for longer.
- Duress: I may be wrong but don't you want to remove play something that hits creatures since you there's more creatures than noncreatures ? Maybe it was too long since I played Duress...
- I never liked Brion. It's a 4/4 lifelink, yes, but the W/R decks will always want to play something else instead. It's more a personal opinion. I've seen other players in my playgroup be very happy with it. If I tell them I'll cut, they'll probably convince me not to.
- Firespout: rather have Volcanic Fallout. This card shouldn't be taking a precious multicolor spot.
I liked your feedback and I'll treat it like warnings for those cards. I may end up agreeing with you on a lot of them. Feel free to try and convince me on the others ;).

There's not. It's the best black creature at doing what it does by far.

The noncreature cards are the biggest threat to black, and the most powerful cards in the cube. This card hits like 95% of the top cards for each color across the cube.
Quote from The Scientist »
- Nekrataal: I have 2 similar cards in cube. This one is BB and has poor stats for 4 mana. It's always borderline and so far it stayed in. It may not be for longer.
One of the best creatures at doing what it does, and the first strike body is relevant. I certainly wouldn't cut it from 360. Better yet 540.
Quote from The Scientist »
- Mogg Fanatic served its purpose and there must be better 1 drops or even 2 drops to replace it with.
There's not. Even the smallest of cubes still need it for 1-drop critical mass, you can't afford to cut it from a cube this size. Plus, it's a great card, M10 rules or not. There's a plethora of 1-toughness creatures in the cube that it can kill for a single mana, and it can also chump-block, carry equipment and attack. As well as tacking his damage onto another burn spell to kill off 'walkers and bigger creatures. He's great, and should absolutely stay.
..........
I disagree with eidolon about Twinblade Slasher and Bramblecrush. I'd play both at 450 for certain, and they absolutely belong in a cube this size.
Ty for your reply. Your article about cube design (in your sig) was an interesting read and I'll keep it in mind next time I'm going over my cube list.
Isn't Dauthi Horror just the same as Nezumi Cutthroat ? Don't get me wrong, I really want to keep Dauthi Horror in, but I'm looking for a convincing argument. Altho I tguess 2/1 unblockable for 1B should suffice, it's always borderline in.
I'll keep Duress in then.
I'm still not convinced about Nekrataal as I really want to lower the cost of black cards but it's not a bad card, I'll admit that.

No, it's not the same. Shadow is much more reliably unblockable than fear (There are two creatures that can block Horror; a lot more than that can block Cutthroat). Dauthi Horror is a fantastic black aggro creature that should be run in every cube that supports the archetype.
I'm still not convinced about Nekrataal as I really want to lower the cost of black cards but it's not a bad card, I'll admit that.
I don't what it would have to do to convince you. It's a 2/1 first strike body that murders an opponent's dude for 4 mana. That's still a good deal. Yeah, Shriekmaw's better and Bone Shredder and Skinrender are comparable, but I'd like more of this effect not less in my cube. At 500 cards, Nekrataal's no where near the chopping block in my cube.
Too many people try to get those numbers rounded and added subpar cards to do so. Your cube shouldn't be about perfect balance in numbers, it should be about playing good cards.
No they aren't, but I'm never excited about U/R cards for example. There aren't even close to 5 cards I like putting in my cube.
I added Steppe Lynx and removed Wing Shards. It was that or Pulse of the Fields but I wanna keep that one around for now. It has won many games for control decks but I'm not sure my control decks need more.
Another option to cut was Miraculous Recovery but that card can be splashed in a lot of decks.
@eidolon232: Our opinions are different on a lot of things but I guess it's just me not having played enough cube in the past year. I'll keep your comments in mind as I playtest more (I hope)
Brittle Efigy: It may trade just 1-1 but it's colorless, can fit in any deck, can be used a turn earlier if you play it and activate later and doesn't make the creature die. What's not to like ? Yes, there's cheaper removal spells but like I said, this one fits all decks.
Hex Parasite: 1/1 for 1 colorless isn't exciting but it can be played by every deck. And it feels like it's a lot more usefull than you say it is.
And if you don't like Jilt, Some people have had success with Gelectrode.
The biggest problem is WR, IMO. After the 3 good cards, there's nothing else I really wanna cube with. If I were you, I'd only use 4 cards per combination anyways. Add in extra colorless cards and monocolored cards.
I don't even like Prophetic Bolt. It's never bad, but I just hoped there was something better. Jilt doesn't excite me but at least more than the Bolt. Signet is a colorless card to me. Signets help those colors, they aren't part of it.

I think Prophetic Bolt is excellent. It kills a lot of creatures and a lot of planeswalkers, and Impulses at the same time. Jilt is unexciting, but it's quite solid. Signet is an artifact, but it won't ever get played outside of RU, so it's not really colorless at all.
Prophetic Bolt is actually my favorite UR card. I know most would say Fire/Ice is better, but P-Bolt is just a beating.
I don't think Wing Shards, Miraculous Recovery, or Pulse of the Fields are that great. I like Steppe Lynx more than any of those and would look to replace the other two with stuff.
SoWaP>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Brittle Effigy and Hex Parasite. Hex Parasite proved almost useless in my cube.
changed some cards over the last 2 days:
all changes are recorded in the changelog.
19/03/12
Murmuring Bosk => Creeping Tar Pit
Grimgrin, Corpse-Born => Huntmaster of the Fells
Howling Mine => Mana Crypt
Shrine of Burning Rage => Sword of Body and Mind
20/03/12
Ambition's Cost => Grave Titan
Blastoderm => Thrun, the Last Troll
Indrik Stomphowler => Fauna Shaman
I think I'll replace those bouncelands with more allied color manlands and then find something for the enemy colors, but for now, Bosk is out. I'll probably add it again when I've made the full changes.
I'm not sure about Fauna Shaman, but I do know Indrik hasn't been very usefull.

I like those changes except for the green ones. At 540, there's no way you should be cutting Indrik Stomphowler and Blastoderm, even though the cards you are adding are great. I'd cut some of these instead: Deadwood Treefolk, Elvish Aberration, Tree of Redemption, Dosan the Fallen Leaf, Spetral Force, Phantom Nantuko, Doubling Season.

I didn't really like cutting Blastoderm either, but I figured Thrun is just a better version ;-)
And Indrik, well. It's 5 mana and not a creature you can do anything with once it's into play, except that it's a 4/4. When you play, if your opponent happens to have an artifact or enchantment into play, then it's a good card. That's not all the time. That's why I like the Wickerbrough better.
Out of all the cards you listed, the only one I can see myself cutting is Tree of redemption, but I haven't tested it much, so it's in for now.
I'm not terribly excited about Dosan for the moment so maybe that one will go soon.
I've seen crazy stuff with Treefolk but it's probably too slow for cube. In any ramp deck in green it'll be a house but I guess there's still better options.
All of the other cards I simply like too much. Especially Doubling Season. Yes the card doesn't do anything on its own, but you only need to keep it in play 1 turn to do some amazing things with it. It's a card that it's in there because of the many interactions with other cards and a lot of players like it.
Eidolon: the intent is to bring it back at some point, once I've figured out what lands I'll use so that Tar Pit will be part of a cycle of lands to help colors.
Probably going to cut:
Mistmeadow Skulk
Cemetery Puca
Unless someone talks me out of it.
I don't think anyone's going to talk you into keeping those cards.
As for the Stomphowler, your opponent is likely going to have a target by T5 or later, and having the effect strapped to a decent body is quite nice. I consider the Stomphowler to be a playable card for 360, and a staple for 450. In a cube this size, it should stay in over a lot of other stuff in your green section.
What eidolon and wtwlf said. There's not a thing wrong with Stomphowler. I actually think one of green's major strengths is having it's spells strapped onto bodies. It's the best way for green to acrue card advantage.
I can see the merits of Deadwood Treefolk (I ran it for a long time). I do not get at all why Elvish Aberration, Spectral Force, and Phantom Nantuko are so well liked. I don't see how they are better than Blastoderm and Indrik Stomphowler.
Well the Abberation is mostly a forestcycler, but I've seen that ability to give mana being usefull too to pump out a big fireball.
Spectral Force is like an 8/8 with trample. Attack with it, Berserk it and Fling it to the head, it's insanely good. And there's plenty of ways to get it untapped.
Nantuko I've considered a very decent 3 drop. With Doubling Season it gets really good. At worst it will be an infinite blocker. But it's probably close to being cut. I just hate cutting a decent 3 drop for a card with bigger cmc.
Spectral Force is like an 8/8 with trample. Attack with it, Berserk it and Fling it to the head, it's insanely good. And there's plenty of ways to get it untapped.
OR, you could use a creature that doesn't require you to have Berserk/Fling to be good, and untaps all on its own.
I'd rather use something like Terra Stomper, and even that card is pretty bad.
I like that change. The Stomphowler is an answer to so many broken cards in the cube. There are so many sick artifacts and enchantments that you just have to kill. And you get a 4/4 body from it at the same time. It's also easily splashable, and a nice toolbox card to have available with your Stronghold/Nightmare/Etc.

Hex Parasite: 1/1 for 1 colorless isn't exciting but it can be played by every deck. And it feels like it's a lot more usefull than you say it is.
Sword of War and Peace: Guess I should find one and try it then.
I'd like to cut some W/G and U/B cards. Are there any cards in there you really don't like? And more importantly, why ?

My
540> 360 Powered CubeI can think of 5 that are good enough for 540:
And if you don't like Jilt, Some people have had success with Gelectrode.
The biggest problem is WR, IMO. After the 3 good cards, there's nothing else I really wanna cube with. If I were you, I'd only use 4 cards per combination anyways. Add in extra colorless cards and monocolored cards.

I don't think Wing Shards, Miraculous Recovery, or Pulse of the Fields are that great. I like Steppe Lynx more than any of those and would look to replace the other two with stuff.

My
540> 360 Powered Cubeall changes are recorded in the changelog.
19/03/12
Murmuring Bosk => Creeping Tar Pit
Grimgrin, Corpse-Born => Huntmaster of the Fells
Howling Mine => Mana Crypt
Shrine of Burning Rage => Sword of Body and Mind
20/03/12
Ambition's Cost => Grave Titan
Blastoderm => Thrun, the Last Troll
Indrik Stomphowler => Fauna Shaman
I think I'll replace those bouncelands with more allied color manlands and then find something for the enemy colors, but for now, Bosk is out. I'll probably add it again when I've made the full changes.
I'm not sure about Fauna Shaman, but I do know Indrik hasn't been very usefull.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Cards I want to add tonight:
Edric, Spymaster of Trest
Emeria Angel
Probably going to cut:
Mistmeadow Skulk
Cemetery Puca
Unless someone talks me out of it.

My
540> 360 Powered CubeI don't think anyone's going to talk you into keeping those cards.

I can see the merits of Deadwood Treefolk (I ran it for a long time). I do not get at all why Elvish Aberration, Spectral Force, and Phantom Nantuko are so well liked. I don't see how they are better than Blastoderm and Indrik Stomphowler.

My
540> 360 Powered CubeOR, you could use a creature that doesn't require you to have Berserk/Fling to be good, and untaps all on its own.
I'd rather use something like Terra Stomper, and even that card is pretty bad.
