Hi all,
I've been cubing (what my friends and I call "cube drafting") since 2004, during Mirrodin block. In summary, my 450 card powered cube (for 2 drafts of 5 players) is made for multiplayer play (our modified version of chaos .. all spells open except that you can only win by killing the adjacent player). Without further ado..
Black (60 cards - ordered by card type, then casting cost)
Never played a multiplayer cube but from my multiplayer EDH experience I've got a couple of suggestions:
Telepathy - Probably my favorite "political" card for multiplayer. "My hand sucks but look what he's holding. You should attack him with your fatties." Memory Plunder - It's rough on the mana but once people's yards start getting full this card is just amazing. You don't have to cast very many instant speed Austere Commands with your monoblue deck to see how powerful this effect is.
Thanks for responding. And yes sir, I'll stop the whoring now.
I'm also thinking of strengthening my landbase (probably along the lines of 65 lands/65 lands). McDonald's cube idea of combining hybrids/bounce/etc. lands is a great idea that I'm going to consider..
I also do not like a too large multi-colored section. I would cut it down to 60 or even 50 (sounds harsh doesn't it?) and distribute the slots over the other sections.
As to card suggestions, I'm pretty new to cubing so I'm a bit hesitant to give suggestions.
I think a large multi-colour section is fine in multiplayer since they are usually more splashy effects and in multiplayer you would usually have time to set up.

Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I am petitioning for the end of: the Mythic rarity, the Planeswalker card type, the post-8th edition card faces, the 2010 rule changes, colorless cards that aren't artifacts or lands, the Legendary supertype, the stack, auras, multicolor cards, artifact creatures, tokens, goblins, merfolk, elves, sorceries, instants, and permanents. Basically, I just want to play with purple contraptions.
Copy this sig to join the cause. Cuz, ya know, Wizards makes decisions based on sigs.
Thanks for all the feedback. We do play a slower multiplayer game. It does give us some time to set up, but I agree that my land mix is a problem. My first task will be to put the Vivid lands in the cube, taking out 5 multicolour cards. Then I'll add 10 more of pain/bounce/hybrid lands (whichever is best for that colour combination.. there's another forum discussing that). and I'll also try to fit Grand Coliseum somehow..
Having more multicolour cards in a multiplayer cube adds more variety, but I do understand that mana mix is key to a strong deck.

To comment on Rantipole and Fredo's recommendations. Please note that my comments are based for a multiplayer cube, not a conventional 1 on 1 cube.
Coalition Relic - I may try to fit this in. Grim Monolith - I already have Mana Vault in my cube Crystal Shard - took this out for a more versatile Erratic Portal Ring of Gix - never liked this, but Icy Manipulator and Puppet Strings serves as my tappers Wall of Blossoms - don't like walls in my cube. They just slow down my multiplayer games. Plus I want all my creatures to attack, not just stand there and look pretty Power Sink - I don't know how this would work in the new M10 rules Stroke of Genius - took this out for Thirst for Knowledge, because it's faster card draw Animate Dead - took this out for Diabolic Servitude, but I am reconsidering adding more faster reanimator cards Liliana Vess - 5 mana is hefty for discard or tutoring abilities. Yawgmoth's Bargain - this spells death in multiplayer games
Following everyone's suggestion regarding adding more lands, what would you prefer? a full set of bouncelands or hybrid lands? they both have their ups and downs, but which 10 should I choose? should I also consider the 5 Vivids?
Balefire Liege - I agree that this can be taken out Coiling Oracle - I still like the card/land advantage that this gives Cold-Eyed Selkie - potential landwalk is valuable in multiplayer Wilt-Leaf Cavaliers - this is coming out Phantom Nishoba - this has been a threat everytime it comes on board Gaddock Teeg - this really holds people back in multiplayer.. however I am trying to speed multiplayer games, so.. Watchwolf - this is coming out Moroii - wouldn't this be a flying Juzam? what's wrong with that? Inkfathom Infiltrator - really powers out weenie black Nath of the Gilt-Leaf - I actually like this over Liliana.. more impactful Vulturous Zombie - this has been hit or miss. Rumbling Slum - not that difficult to cast, but this can go.. Hellhole Rats - by turn 4, in multiplayer it's definitely doing to do damage on the discard Gerrard's Verdict - 2cc for 2 discard AND life gain? what's not to like?
Could these be potential cards on the chopping block? Armadillo Cloak - another effort to pare down GW Burning-Tree Shaman - this is hit and miss. but its body is good Dauntless Escort - ditto on the GW; Hierarch is better Dragon Broodmother - much harder to cast, but a bomb once it's in play Duergar Hedge-Mage - I've actually never seen this in play.. Unmake - white and black have better and easier to cast removal..
In order to fit in the lands, I will be taking out 10 multicolour cards and putting in the 10 bounce lands, as I don't have the full 10 hybrid or 5 vivid lands. I'm also going do the following:
Ravages of War > Armageddon - don't need 2 "geddons" in the multiplayer cube
Liliana Vess > Ghostly Prison - going to retry Vess as recommended by you guys.. however black gets 71 cards, white has 69.. doesn't matter that much about the card numbers..
- Cloudgoat is decent, but it was replaced by Conqueror's Pledge recently. What I don't like about Cloudgoat is that the tokens are kithkin and not soldier, so there's no synergy with other cards in the cube.. I've seen 1 kithkin token getting shot down just so that Cloudgoat ranger cannot fly. happens too often
- Rotting Rats is great in multiplayer.. everyone discards twice!
- Mercenary Knight is great in a reanimator deck, otherwise it's still a splashable "big" body
Cloudgoat Ranger puts 6 power to the table for 5. It can be a 5 power flier. One of the bodies is a 3/3. It can be blinked, reanimated and recurred. It only has two white in its cost. I see almost no situation where it's worse than Conqueror's Pledge.
thanks for all of your feedback. Based on your comments in this and many other threads, I've made the following changes (xx > yy = xx replaces yy)
- kor Skyfisher > Ghostly prison - going to try the Skyfisher out
- Woodfall Primus > Cloudthresher - the thresher should be a great reanimate target, and easier to cast
- Animate Dead > Dread Return - fast to cast reanimate card
- Liliana Vess > Death Cloud - as much as I love death cloud, it rarely sees play
- Triskelion > Mindless Automaton - putting the old classic back in
- Su-chi > Empyrial Armor - at worst Su-chi is still a 4/4 colourless creature for 4cc; equipment hasn't been used for a while
In addition, I also added the bouncelands and removed the following 10 cards
- Watchwolf - reducing the GW cards in the cube
- Wilt-Leaf Cavaliers - reducing the GW cards in the cube; hardes to cast
- Dauntless Escort - reducing the GW cards in the cube
- Unmake - harder to cast than other BW cards
- Duergar Hedge-Mage - rarely saw play
- Balefire Liege - harder to cast, and triggered abilities rarely happened
- Fight to the Death - never really gave this an opportunity, but meh
- Rumbling Slum - harder to cast
- Hellhole Rats - as recommended by Eidolon
- Vulturous Zombie - chose Nath over this..
The card list in the first post is forthcoming, but the spreadsheet in the first post has been updated.. check it out if you want..
I usually play with 4 other players, so Syphon Mind is insanely too good to draw 4 cards for just 4 mana. Still it's something to rethink.
I don't like too much lifegain, so Sun Droplet is out of the question.
And other than being very big, the two creatures mentioned are something special. They can be chump blocked forever.. Rather have something that gives some advantage (eg. card, token, removal, etc), than being just a big creature with no evasion.
And other than being very big, the two creatures mentioned are something special. They can be chump blocked forever.. Rather have something that gives some advantage (eg. card, token, removal, etc), than being just a big creature with no evasion.
But Multani has shroud, so he's difficult to get rid of. Also, being enormous is sometimes enough in multiplayer. One hit could spell doom for a player and quite often a player won't have a way to deal with one of these guys when it comes down.
I'm not a big fan of superlarge creatures with near invulnerabilities (see Darksteel Colossus). I want my multiplayer games to be as competitive as possible, without having someone bring in a creature on first turn and can literally win the game like that.

One would have to work hard (and get lucky) to do that no? And I think they would deserve a reward (winning) when it actually works instead of being a dead card in your hand like it so often is. I mean you can still Edict or Swords the creature or counter the Tinker.

Agreed. Less multicolor makes for stronger packs. An on-color mana-fixing land is more important for a deck than an on-color gold card.

These are mostly really solid suggestions. I'm not sold on Power Sink but most of the rest are really good.
I also think multicolor needs to be a smaller section.

Yawgmoth's Bargain - this spells death in multiplayer games

Power Sink is great. It is a Counter and Mana Short rolled into one ... great for gaining tempo on opponent.

Cold-Eyed Selkie - potential landwalk is valuable in multiplayer

+Cloudgoat Ranger (one of my favorite white creatures - gives 6 power for 5 mana or a pseudo 5/3 flier depending on what you need.)
-Faerie Macabre (or Rotting Rats or Mercenary Knight)
I used to write cube articles on StarCityGames, now for GatheringMagic and podcast about cube (w/Antknee42.)
- Rotting Rats is great in multiplayer.. everyone discards twice!
- Mercenary Knight is great in a reanimator deck, otherwise it's still a splashable "big" body

in a 4 player game it's a 6 for 1 for 4 mana.
Sun Droplet
Again, in a 4 person game, this makes you very hard to kill since you can gain 4 life every go around. Sounds ridiculous for 2 mana.
mutani, maro-sorcerer
lord of extinction
both pretty obvious, just some cards that are good in multiplayer off the top of my head.
