Blue Dreadhorde Arcanist. Less survivability, but has no restrictions in the size of the spell that it can cast. Not to mention giving a cost reduction from anywhere from hand and being able to cast artifacts. Seems really powerful since it's much more reliable than Dreadhorde Arcanist, which was often too narrow due to being reliant on its power.
The biggest downside is that the flashback is an attack trigger, not an enters trigger. The one turn delay on the second ability could be a significant downside in practice. There's no intrinsic evasion so Bilbo won't necessarily survive combat. On the other hand, the ability to flash back a removal spell will help it get through sometimes, forcing your opponent to leave back multiple blockers just to stop the threat of activation on your bear.
The way the attack trigger is worded gives this some really powerful benefits that I didn't realize at first:
- It doesn't target, so your opponent can't just fizzle the ability by removing one card unless it's the only instant / sorcery / artifact that you can cast.
- It specifically says instant or sorcery SPELL, not CARD. This means that you can cast the adventure half of cards from the graveyard. This is quite the strong interaction considering how much play Bonecrusher Giant / Brazen Borrower see play.
I think this is a very cool card. Looping Black Lotus for the powered cubes out there should be fun. I just wonder how many times it's gonna attack then just die given it's just a 2/2.
Expecting to try it for the high ceiling but cutting because it lacks flash/flying/protection. But not having to connect will make it fine to suicide him into blockers for lots of spells in powered cube

I'd imagine that Bilbo will be in removal heavy decks more often than not that can clear the path for him. A good chunk of the spells you'll be recurring with it will be removal spells after all. And even if it dies in combat, you're probably still ahead card advantage wise.

I feel so too - I've found good 1-2 CMC removal is becoming increasing more important both to help clear a path for your own threats and to remove your opponent's threats.
