This is a fringe card to be sure. Nonetheless, it's got a neat little keyword soup for a one-drop, and it scales very well with +1/+1 counters and equipment.
More importantly of course, it serves as a sort of Blood Pet, fixing your mana and ramping a bit you when you need it. Just getting a 3-drop on turn two outside of green is a pretty big deal. And fixing colors in the early game can easily change the outcome of a game or the playability of a hand. It's enough that I may be willing to try it.
Pretty epic with Eater of Virtue, and being able to block X/1's makes it quite unique among mana dorks. But even with those advantages, I don't think it's better than Lotus Petal.
