Seems innocuous at first, but take a moment to read the card. It targets all nonland permanents, and steals ALL abilities except loyalty, including mana abilities.
So it's almost like a mini Dack Fayden early game, and late game it will disable the opponents' planeswalkers.
And at the bare minimum, it's a 2/3 for 2.
Seems like it's quite worthy of discussion, though perhaps it's not quite as versatile as 3feri.
EDIT: Any fun-loving decks will be delighted to learn that you can target your own stuff to benefit from the activation color filter: target your own Najeela, the Blade-Blossom or Golos, Tireless Pilgrim to convert WUBRG to 5!
Thrilled with this card. Shutting down an early Mox or Sol Ring and getting your own is going to be amazing. This will be one of the top cards of the set!
Yeah this seems great, pithing needle on a relevant body (I think 3 toughness is a huge part of what makes this good, as it makes it a good blocker against aggro).
Also, I find it funny that if you target an equipment with this, it gets the equip ability, but can't ever equip (or can equip then immediately falls off? Creatures getting an equip ability is weird).
Guild slots are always tight. Definitely doesn't beat out fractured identity for the top slot but it's right there with the azorious teferi's for 2nd and 3rd. Will have to test.
Great card for sure... will also create some fun interactions.
Azorious is super stacked, so I have no idea how it competes to the mid-high tier options.
Worth a test.
Dack fayden is a bit loose of analogy as all you have to do is kill this creature to gain your abilities back and it can't do anything to big artifact creatures... but I see where you are coming from.
I've always been a fan of phyrexian revoker and this is revoker on steroids.
Will definitely make room for this. Am already going down a guild slot with this release, but maybe it’s time for Geist of Saint Traft to exit the cube.
Barring a late addition this will be the #1 card from this set. Going to see if it comes up in an early draft tonight and will report back. Locking down early mana in a powered Cube is gonna be awesome!
Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I'm ready to believe this is better on power level than soulherder, but I'm not willing to give up the synergy, and I'm not sure it's better than the teferies or Fractured Identity. The closest to the chopping block is probably 3feri, in part because it's the least fun of the bunch.
A new card to break into the top 5 of has been on my wishlist, as well as one that costs less than 3 mana. Obviously this card checks off the second box, but does it really merit its place in a crowded guild? Running a filter for nonland cards with activated abilities nets approximately 175/630 cards in my cube. And when I going through at each individual card, some nasty interactions come to light. Griselbrand? Why yes I'd love to draw seven. Opposition? Don't mind if I do. And that is on top of all the mana abilities it can steal as mentioned above. It's quite reminiscent of Thieving Skydiver, which also excels at turning the opponent's mana rocks against them.
Overall, Scheming Fence seems like a bit of a hybrid between Thieving Skydiver and Phyrexian Revoker. It doesn't hit the same subset of targets as the Skydiver and can't take control of them permanently, and it lacks the flexibility and proactive play of Revoker. But in return, it's cheaper than Skydiver, has a better body than Revoker, and it has some real juicy interactions in cube which are unique to it alone. Scheming Fence might not be as rock solid as the other Azorius options, but it is so much more interesting. I'm definitely willing to make room for it.
Wow, this card looks fantastic. Shutting down a planeswalker or Jitte is always welcome. Stealing a mana rock's ability is great. But that last ability makes it really fun as well: you can use this on your own Mana Vault, Grim Monolith, even Basalt Monolith to copy the mana ability but not the nasty untap clause. Copying your own Time Vault's ability is nuts, copying your opponent's Time Vault ability even nuttier. With Merieke Ri Berit, you bury a creature each turn. Et cetera. A lot of cool other interactions will come up, no doubt. And worst case, it's still a 2/3 for 2.
While I’m still planning to run this, I just realized that in addition to being unable to proactively shut off a card (as wtwlf notes in his review), an opponent making a copy of the chosen permanent (via a Clone effect or maybe a token copy) or flickering/bouncing & recasting/sacrificing & reanimating it causes the permanent to regain its function and for this card to lose it.
Still looking forward to testing the card, but I’ve definitely cooled on it a little.
I agree that it's not a slam dunk or an instant include.
It's a reactive only play, and it can trade equal or down mana 1 for 1 for removal.
There's a few cards that it's REALLY powerful against (opposition, mana vault) , but the vast majority of the time it'll act as a phyrexian revoker with upside.
Phyrexian revoker is a 2 for 1 if they can't remove it, but the extra card you get is a 2/1, where this will commonly get a signet/mox or a mana dork... which is a big upgrade. That's great, but still "fair". Revoker is a latish pick in my cube and wouldn't be close to cubebable if it cost WU.
My guess is it's on the same tier of spell as a spell quelller or geist of st traft.. not a teferri/fractured identity.
All that being said, it'll make for a lot of fun interactions and occasional blowouts. Therefore, I find this card WAY more interesting than it's direct competition, so I'm happy to test it and run it over cards it's near equal to in power.
